[Viral lesions of the eye in human immunodeficiency virus infection].

HIV infection destroying cellular immunity system creates prerequisites for herpesvirus involvement of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. A total of 370 HIV-infected patients were examined. Ocular diseases were detected in 53 (14.35%). The most prevalent conditions were retinal angiopathy (most often with cotton-like foci--in 7.3% and cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in 4.1%). Cotton-like foci in the presence of CMV activation (evidenced by high level of CMV DNA in peripheral blood) are a sign of probable CMV infection manifesting by retinitis or involvement of other organs. Intrav

Acute bacterial infection of the eye: bacterial keratitis and endophthalmitis.

Bacterial keratitis and endophthalmitis are serious disorders which can result in partial or total loss of vision. The epidemiology, common aetiopathogens, clinical features, diagnostic techniques and management are reviewed with an emphasis on laboratory diagnosis and antimicrobial therapy.

[Pathomorphological changes in the eyes of turkeys in Salmonella arizonae infections].

In one flock, one-eye blindness was observed in the chronical course of disease after infection with the germs of Salmonella arizonae. Changes such as granulomatous iridocyclochorioretinitis with the finding of the bacterial causative agent directly in the pathologically affected tissue were diagnosed on the basis of detailed histological examination of the affected eyeballs. The changes affected almost all parts of the eyeball (iris, ciliary body, lens, retina and chorioid) and were characterized by mononuclear infiltrate with differently intensive admixture of heterophils. The lens was liabl

Aetiology and treatment of acute bacterial infection of the external eye.

The microbial flora of 738 patients with acute bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration, blepharitis, dacryocystitis, and discharging sockets has been investigated. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae were the main pathogens isolated. Str. viridans was associated with conjunctivitis in patients aged under 1 year. moraxella sp. was isolated on only one occasion. Overall, 40% of specimens were associated with Staph. epidermidis or mixed skin flora, which also occurred with cultures of the normal eye. Clostridium welchii was isolated on 3 occasions but

Investigation of eye flora in cats infected with Herpesvirus and Calicivirus.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The ocular surface is perpetually exposed to the external environment, rendering it susceptible to microbial contamination. The ocular surface microbiota consists of non-pathogenic microorganisms that inhabit the conjunctiva and cornea. This study's objective was to extensively review the prevalence of bacterial and fungal organisms in the conjunctiva of healthy and diseased cats. (Herpes- and Calici-infected groups). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study was performed on 240 cats that had visited veterinary health centers (Tehran, Iran) for examination. Sterile

Molecular Diagnosis of Human Taenia martis Eye Infection.

Taenia martis, a tapeworm harbored in the intestine of mustelids, is a rarely encountered zoonotic cysticercosis pathogen. The larval stage closely resembles the Taenia solium cysticercus, but the natural host and thus the epidemiology of the disease is different. We here report a human eye infection diagnosed molecularly in a previously healthy female German patient. The case represents the third human infection described worldwide; the two previous cases were also European, involving eye and brain.

Eye and Periocular Skin Involvement in Herpes Zoster Infection.

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) is a clinical manifestation of the reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection and is more common in people with diminished cell-mediated immunity. Lesions and pain correspond to the affected dermatomes, mostly in first or second trigeminal branch and progress from maculae, papules to vesicles and form pustules, and crusts. Complications are cutaneous, visceral, neurological, ocular, but the most debilitating is post-herpetic neuralgia. Herpes zoster ophthalmicus may affect all the ophthalmic structures, but most severe eye-threatening complic

Helicobacter pylori infection and eye diseases: a systematic review.

The connection between Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and eye diseases has been increasingly reported in the literature and in active research. The implication of this bacterium in chronic eye diseases, such as blepharitis, glaucoma, central serous chorioretinopathy and others, has been hypothesized. Although the mechanisms by which this association occurs are currently unknown, this review describes shared pathogenetic mechanisms in an attempt to identify a lowest common denominator between eye diseases and Hp infection. The aim of this review is to assess whether different studies could

Dirofilaria causing eye infection in a patient from Malaysia.

Human dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens have been reported in Malaysia. This is the fourth reported case of dirofilariasis caused by D. repens. The patient was a Chinese male from Kuching Sarawak, Malaysia who presented with a one day history of redness and itchiness over the temporal aspect of his left eye. A worm was seen and later removed from beneath the conjunctiva under local anesthesia and based on the morphological characteristics, it was identified as an immature Dirofilaria repens.

Nosocomial infection in an eye hospital: incidence and occurrence patterns.

PURPOSE: To describe the incidence and occurrence patterns of nosocomial infections in a large eye hospital over a 6-year period. METHODS: Medical records of 94,013 consecutive inpatients admitted to Zhongshan Ophthalmic Centre, Guangzhou, China, from 1996 to 2002, were reviewed. Demographic data and infection diagnoses were collected. Nosocomial infection was defined as an infection that was absent during preadmission assessments but detected at least 48 h after admission to the hospital, or occurred after surgical procedures performed within the hospital. RESULTS: The cumulative incidence

The role of parasitic infection in the aetiology of phlyctenular eye disease.

Stool and urine analysis of 150 cases of phlyctenular eye disease, revealed that 115 (76.67%) were positive for intestinal parasites. The most prevalent parasites were Hymenolepis nana (49.56%) followed by Ascaris lumbricoides (27.82%). Eosinophilia (5-10%) was detected in 90 phlycten cases (60%), 80 of them (88.8%) had parasitic infection. Since H. nana can produce a type of tissue hypersensitivity, phlyctenular eye disease may be partly referred to such an infection.

The pathology of the eye in armadillos experimentally infected with Mycobacterium leprae.

One hundred and twenty-seven eyes from 66 Mycobacterium leprae inoculated armadillos were studied histologically and some ultrastructurally. Inflammatory reactions were found in the following extraocular tissues: the eyelid, including the orbicularis muscle and the third eyelid, extraocular muscles, tear gland and Harder's gland. The early and slight changes of the intraocular tissues, small amounts of lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophage infiltrations were confined to the area around the anterior angle specifically within the trabeculae and the adjacent ciliary body, the root of the iris

Unusual eye abnormalities associated with congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Seven children with congenital cytomegalovirus infection demonstrated a higher than expected incidence of "rare" ophthalmological abnormalities, including anophthalmia and Peters' anomaly. These data suggest that appropriate investigation for evidence of cytomegalovirus infection should be instituted in any child with congenital ocular defects.
