The study was a prospective evaluation of the prevalence of distichiasis and/or dysplastic eyelashes among trachomatous trichiasis cases at the oculoplasty unit of a hospital in Oman over 3 months in 2000. An oculoplasty surgeon examined and photographed cases using a bio-microscope. Out of 80 cases, 58 (72.5%) had abnormal eyelashes in addition to trachomatous trichiasis. Eyelash trichomegaly is a rare disorder in which normal features of eyelashes such as length, color, thickness, or curling changes. It may occur due to many causes, such as the presence of other disorders such as HIV infection, congenital anomalies like oculocutaneous albinism, or Oliver-McFarlane syndrome. It may be linked to the use of certain drugs and can also be present as an isolated trait by birth. Here, we report a rare case of eyelash trichomegaly in a 19-year-old female having diffused alopecia, diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE: There have been several reports in the literature demonstrating the adverse effects of multiple ocular cosmetic procedures, such as eyelash extensions, eyeliner tattoo, and eyelash dyeing. We herein describe a patient in whom two intraocular eyelashes and an anterior chamber cyst embedded into the anterior surface of the iris was detected following penetrating eye injury. After a one year asymptomatic period, the patient was hospitalized because of uveitic reaction in the anterior chamber which may be due to cyst development. The lashes and cyst were removed surgically, and examined pathologically. There was no complication in one year follow-up period.

Here, we report the case of a patient with many comb-shaped eyelashes in the lacrimal sac and discuss the potential of using dacryoendoscopy to detect and remove foreign bodies from the lacrimal apparatus.
