Necrotizing fasciitis is uncommon in the United States. Despite medical advances, its mortality rate has remained unchanged over the past 20 years at 25% to 35%. Risk scoring tools have been created but often fall short when used in the clinical setting. We present a case of an elderly woman with necrotizing fasciitis but with extensive intraparenchymal air that is undocumented in the literature. Imaging demonstrated significant air collections originating from an infection on the right foot that extended through the body, including the cranial vault. Despite aggressive resuscitative efforts,

Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is an uncommon connective tissue disease characterized by abrupt onset of edema, followed by progressive induration of primarily the distal extremities. Patients may exhibit inflammatory arthritis, joint contractures, decreased mobility, and nerve entrapment. Almost half of patients with EF may have coexisting morphea plaques. Classic laboratory studies display peripheral eosinophilia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and elevated inflammatory markers. EF is included in the spectrum of scleroderma like disorders and may be difficult to distinguish from other sclerosing skin

Necrotizing fasciitis is a dangerous bacterial infectious disease that is not commonplace in Czech society. On the other hand, neither is it so rare that the majority of surgeons should not come across it occasionally. In the early stages, pathological changes in fascia, subcutaneous tissue and even skin may run an inconspicuous course. However, this can rapidly deteriorate into shock and sepsis which may lead to multi-organ failure and an imminent life-threatening condition. The fatality rate of necrotizing fasciitis among high-risk groups (e.g. diabetics, patients who are immuno-compromised,

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of postpartum vulvar necrotizing fasciitis diagnosis and management.
CASE REPORT: A 16 year old woman with a history of vaginal delivery with episiotomy uncomplicated puerperium who presents in vulvar necrotizing fasciitis rapid progression to septic shock with spread to pelvis and abdomen.
RESULTS: A CT scan at the level reported amount of gas vaginal labia.
CONCLUSIONS: An early diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment including extensive surgical management, appropriate antibiotic coverage and intensive care unit, are factors that improve the prognosis and red

A 16-year-old healthy boy presented with an acute claw hand and signs of flexor tenosynovitis or possible necrotizing fasciitis of all 4 fingers in 1 hand. After an operative incision and drainage and treatment with antibiotic, the patient improved; cultures were negative. He relapsed shortly after completing the 10-day course of antibiotics. A second incision and drainage was performed. Cultures from the second operation also revealed no infectious agent. The pathological report indicated a diagnosis of eosinophilic fasciitis. Our patient improved on antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflamma

Necrotizing fasciitis of the cervical facial region is a rare entity that has seen an increasing prevalence in the last 20 years. It is most common in patients with an underlying systemic disease leading to immunosuppression, but can be seen in healthy adults and children. It is characterized by soft tissue destruction which is disproportionate to its clinical symptoms and signs, with rapid progression and fatal outcome, if not treated rapidly and radically. We present a review of the etio-pathogenesis and management of this challenging disease.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an infection localized at the fascial structures (both the superficial and deep ones) layering the muscles though never affecting them. NF death rate is very high (20-40%). NF can be a post-surgery, traumatic or infective complication and its prognosis quoad vitam is fatal without a timely and correct therapy. A 57-year-old woman was got into observation due to her temperature, left thigh pain, erythema and tumefaction in the left groin-crural seat. She suffered from obesity, insulin-dependent mellitus diabetes and modest but chronic renal failure and ischaemic ca

Necrotizing fasciitis is a progressive soft tissue infection (skin, subcutaneous tissue and fascia) caused in the main by Streptococcus pyogenes, which gains entry into the organism through any type of wound and even through intact skin. Diagnosis is essentially clinical, being the sum of non-specific, insidious skin lesions, associated with intense pain and multiorgan failure. Treatment is radical surgical excision of the affected tissues, combined antibiotic therapy and supportive care. However, mortality rates are still very high. It is therefore a disease to be taken very seriously, not on

We are reporting the case of a 39-year-old male, without notable previous history except for an important alcoholic and tobacco consumption, who suffered a bicycle accident resulting in a minor wound on the left elbow. The neglected wound evolved extremely rapidly towards a necrotizing fasciitis, which underwent further complications consisting of a heat shock and multivisceral failure that necessitated reanimation procedures. The patient benefited a triple antibiotic therapy (amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ornidazole and levofloxacin) and an extensive surgical debridement. The progression was t

We present a case of eosinophilic fasciitis, or Shulman syndrome, in a 35-year-old man and discuss its clinical and histopathologic aspects, as well as its relationship to scleroderma. Although controversial, the tendency is to set Shulman syndrome apart from all other sclerodermiform states.

For the first time eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) was described by Shulman. It occurs predominantly in young men, rarely in older women and sporadically in children. The illness was characterised by swelling of the extremities, skin changes, myalgia, and elevation of the peripheral blood eosinophils count and hypergammaglobulinemia. It is followed by rapidly progressive cutaneous and subcutaneous indurations. The histopathologic examination of affected skin shows thickening of the fascia, deep dermal fibrosis and infiltration mainly consists of lymphocytes, plasmocytes, eosinophils. It is suggest

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare and dramatic soft-tissue; infection starting from the subcutaneous tissue, involving the fascia and the underlying muscle and causes necrosis and, suddenly, gangrene. Most frequently the necrotizing fasciitis is localized in anorectal or genitourinary region and in traumatized muscles. Its mortality rate is 20%. Predisposing factors for these infections have included advanced age, obesity, hypertension, atherosclerosis, malnutrition, renal failure, immunosuppression and, primarily, diabetes mellitus. The infection is caused by a lot of gram +, gram -, and anaero

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic fasciitis and the related fasciitis panniculitis syndrome (FPS) are the clinical and morphologic expression of a variety of disorders, of which chronic inflammation and fibrous thickening of the subcutaneous septa, fascia, and perimysium are common. FPS in patients with cancer has been reported sporadically.
METHODS: In the course of our studies of FPS we have encountered three patients who had an associated neoplasia. Nine reports of patients have been taken from the literature. The clinical and histologic data of FPS in the 12 patients were analyzed in the search of

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft-tissue infection characterized by diffuse necrosis of fascia and subcutaneous tissue; initially, skin and muscle are usually spared. The trunk, abdomen, perineum, and extremities are the most commonly involved areas. The case of a 55-year-old man with a cervical necrotizing fasciitis from an infected tooth is presented. The medical history, etiology, anatomy, precipitating factors, clinical presentation, and therapy of this infection are discussed. Early recognition allows effective therapy with aggressive surgical intervention, broad-spectrum antibiotics

The first reported case of eosinophilic fasciitis developing in pregnancy is discussed, and the obstetric management is reported. Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare disease characterized by pain, swelling, and tenderness over the extremities, followed by induration of the skin. Laboratory findings include peripheral eosinophilia, hypergammaglobulinemia, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, distinctive histopathologic changes, and scleroderma-like skin induration without rheumatoid serologic markers. Diagnosis is made by biopsy of the deep fascia of the affected area. The deep fascia will
