[Recurrent Pneumococcal Infections in an Immunosuppressed Patient With Fatal Outcome].

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms greatly increase the risk of infection-the main causes of death are pneumonia and influenza infection. Streptococcus pneumoniae, the most common pathogen causing community-acquired pneumonia, is of great significance in patients suffering from hematological neoplasms, which have a 30 times higher incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease than the general population. Vaccination plays a key role in prevention. The Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends vaccination for adults over 60 and immunosuppressed adults. Only about 20% of these individuals are vaccina

Colovesical Fistula in a Kidney Transplant Patient: A Fatal Outcome.

Colovesical fistula (CVF) is a rare but potentially serious condition characterized by abnormal communication between the colon and the bladder. This pathology can result from inflammatory diseases, malignancies, or previous surgical interventions, with a significant impact on the patient's quality of life. CVF is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, particularly in immunosuppressed individuals, such as renal transplant recipients, due to their increased susceptibility to infections and surgical complications. In this case report, we describe a case of a 57-year-old male patient

An Unusual Fatal Outcome of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Case Report.

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) and Klebsiella oxytoca (K. oxytoca) are pathogenic human bacteria. Clostridium perfringens sepsis w … gas gangrene was shown in the contrast-enhanced computed tomographic. Despite proper management, a fatal outcome was unavoidable and the patient died eight ours later. Microbiological examination isolated C. perfringens and K. oxytoca. Liver abscesses caused by C. perfringens and K. oxytoca are extremely rare complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Earl …

Fatal Outcome of Emphysematous Gastritis due to Sarcina ventriculi Infection.

Sarcina ventriculi is an increasingly common bacterium with a variable pathogenic role. It is often an incidental finding in asymptomatic patients but can also lead to life-threatening conditions, such as gastric perforation and emphysematous gastritis. We report a case of a 14-year-old boy with fatal emphysematous gastritis caused by S. ventriculi, who presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. His medical history included infantile left hemiparesis and operation of patent ductus arteriosus. Emergency surgery was scheduled due to the extremely dilated stomach and gastric pneumatosis, and a t

Fatal Outcome of European Tick-borne Encephalitis after Vaccine Failure.

Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral disease affecting the central nervous system. It is endemic in Switzerland with 200-250 notified cases annually. Active immunization is effective for persons in all age groups. Vaccine failure is rare, in particular after a completed vaccination course. Here, we describe the case of 67-year-old man with a fatal outcome despite vaccination. The diagnosis was confirmed by extensive postmortem analyses. The diagnostic challenges of vaccine failure in tick-borne encephalitis and the dynamics of the immune response in vaccination breakthrough are discussed.

Intra-operative hyperthermia in a cat with a fatal outcome.

HISTORY: A four year old male neutered Domestic Short Hair cat presented for general anaesthesia for hind limb orthopaedic surgery. The cat had been anaesthetized four days previously with propofol and isoflurane and made an uneventful recovery. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION AND MANAGEMENT: On pre-anaesthetic examination the cat had a temperature of 38.9 °C and was otherwise healthy. After a premedication of acepromazine and pethidine, anaesthesia was induced with thiopental and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen 50% and nitrous oxide 50%. Increases in heart rate, respiratory rate, end tidal carbon

Angiotensin II receptor antagonists against migraine in pregnancy: fatal outcome.

A pregnant young woman with a severe migraine is prescribed candesartan, an angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist (AT II antagonists). This has a positive effect-except for severe maldevelopment of her fetus. There is an increase in the use of the fetotoxic drugs, AT II antagonists and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, as prophylactic treatment of migraines, in addition to their use as hypertensives.

Risk factors leading to fatal outcome in scrub typhus patients.

Scrub typhus is a potentially fatal infectious disease. However, to this date, no epidemiologic study on mortality of complicated scrub typh … CHE II score were independent predictive variables. Identification of these risk factors leading to fatal outcome may help physicians to start early intensive management of complicated scrub typhus.

Fatal outcome of disseminated invasive aspergillosis in kidney allograft recipients.

Fungal infections in solid organ transplant recipients are of concern due to the related high mortality and morbidity. Aspergillus species are one of the major opportunistic fungal pathogens causing invasive pulmonary infections which rarely involve extrapulmonary organs. The occurrence varies by type of transplantation, with aspergillosis more frequently associated with heart, liver and lung transplantation cases than those involving kidney recipients. Several risk factors have been proposed, with cases occurring early and late after the transplantation. Although pulmonary involvement is the

Campylobacter bacteremia: clinical features and factors associated with fatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter bacteremia is uncommon. The influence of underlying conditions and of the impact of antibiotics on infection outcome are not known. METHODS: From January 2000 through December 2004, 183 episodes of Campylobacter bacteremia were identified in 23 hospitals in the Paris, France, area. The medical records were reviewed. Characteristics of bacteremia due to Campylobacter fetus and to other Campylobacter species were compared. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for fatal outcome within 30 days. RESULTS: Most affected patients were elderly …

Febrile ulceronecrotic pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta with fatal outcome.

Ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease is a severe, febrile form of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta. The condition may sometimes have a fatal outcome, especially in elderly patients. In this paper, we are reporting on a 60-year-old male patient who suffered from the eruption of erythematous, haemorrhagic, ulceronecrotic papules accompanied by high temperature. Erosions and ulceronecrotic papules covered over 80% of his body. Three weeks after his admittance to our hospital, clinical signs resembling ileus together with the leucocytosis occurred. The patient was transferred to the…

Rapunzel syndrome with a fatal outcome in a neglected child.

The "Rapunzel" syndrome (a trichobezoar with a long tail extending from the stomach to the small bowel) is an uncommon disease. It is related to severe complications but rarely associates to a fatal outcome. We report a case of a 5-year-old girl admitted at the emergency department in cardiorespiratory arrest whose autopsy disclosed an ileal perforation that is caused by a long bezoar extending from the stomach to the small bowel. The authors discuss a possible link between Rapunzel syndrome and child neglect.
