Minimal-actuation feather star-inspired soft swimmers for multimodal 3D maneuverability.

Complex, three-dimensional (3D) motions typically require actuator arrays and complex control architectures. Here, we present a feather star-inspired soft robotic swimmer that uses only two pneumatic inputs to produce three distinct and switchable swimming modes: jellyfish-like pulsation, fishlike propulsion, and rotor-like reorientation. The robot owes this ability to mechanical intelligence: It leverages a monostable instability in its flexible arms to convert two control actuation inputs into 3D swimming modes, including ascension and descension, forward and backward swimming, hovering, and

Functional characterization of lncIMF_17214 in regulating intramuscular fat deposition of yellow-feathered broilers.

Intramuscular fat (IMF) content and lipid composition are key determinants of both the nutritional value and sensory attributes of poultry meat, yet the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain insufficiently elucidated. In this study, triglyceride (TG) content was employed as a quantitative phenotypic proxy to dissect the molecular basis of IMF deposition in yellow-feathered broilers. By integrating TG phenotypic data from 315 individuals with transcriptomic profiles and whole-genome resequencing datasets, a TG-associated long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), lncIMF_17214, was identified. Functional ch

Feather Defects in a Juvenile Common Swift (Apus apus) Associated with a Circovirus Infection.

The common swift is the most observed swift species in Germany. During the summer months in urban areas, juvenile swifts in need of help are … t was of an age of about 35 days, and in good physical condition. The affected body, wing, and tail feathers showed retentions of feather sheaths, malformation of the feather vane, and circumferential constrictions with feather loss. The virological examination of the dystrophic feathers revealed a positive result for the circovirus and a negative result f …

Conserved regulatory switches for the transition from natal down to juvenile feather in birds.

The transition from natal downs for heat conservation to juvenile feathers for simple flight is a remarkable environmental adaptation process in avian evolution. However, the underlying epigenetic mechanism for this primary feather transition is mostly unknown. Here we conducted time-ordered gene co-expression network construction, epigenetic analysis, and functional perturbations in developing feather follicles to elucidate four downy-juvenile feather transition events. We report that extracellular matrix reorganization leads to peripheral pulp formation, which mediates epithelial-mesenchymal…

The digestive tract histology and geographical distribution of gastrointestinal microbiota in yellow-feather broilers.

Exhaustive understanding of intestinal physiological characteristics is the critical precondition for the improvement of intestinal health and growth performance of yellow-feather broilers (YFB). As a vital part of gastrointestinal tract, the symbiotic, complex, and variable microbiota have a profound effect on the nutrition, immunity, health, and production of broilers. Hence, the development status of proventriculus, jejunum, and cecum, and spatial heterogeneity of bacterial community in crop, proventriculus, gizzard, jejunum, cecum, and rectum of adult YFB were detected in our study. The re

DOES PREENING BEHAVIOR REDUCE THE PREVALENCE OF AVIAN FEATHER LICE (PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA)?

Animals defend themselves against parasites in many ways. Defenses, such as physiological immune responses, are capable of clearing some infections. External parasites that do not feed on blood, however, are not controlled by the physiological immune system. Instead, ectoparasites like feather-feeding lice (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) are primarily controlled by behavioral defenses such as preening. Here we test the hypothesis that birds able to preen are capable of clearing infestations of feather lice. We experimentally manipulated preening ability in a captive population of rock pigeons (Colu

Assessment of the effect of housing on feather damage in laying hens using IR thermography.

Plumage damage represents one of the animal-based measures of laying hens welfare. Damage occurs predominantly due to age, environment and damaging pecking. IR thermography, due to its non-invasiveness, objectivity and repeatability is a promising alternative to feather damage scoring systems such as the system included in the Welfare Quality ® assessment protocol for poultry. The aim of this study was to apply IR thermography for the assessment of feather damage in laying hens kept in two housing systems and to compare the results with feather scoring. At the start of the experiment, 16-week-

Functional exercise after total hip replacement (FEATHER): a randomised control trial.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged physical impairments in range of movement, postural stability and walking speed are commonly reported following total hip replacement (THR). It is unclear from the current body of evidence what kind of exercises should be performed to maximize patient function and quality of life. METHODS/DESIGN: This will be a single blind multi centre randomized control trial with two arms. Seventy subjects post primary total hip arthroplasty will be randomized into either an experimental group (n=35), or to a control group (n=35). The experimental group will attend a functional exerci

[Three cases of chronic bird fancier's lung associated with the use of feather bedclothes].

We report here 3 cases of chronic bird fancier's lung diagnosed immunologically using antibodies to pigeon dropping extract. None of the pat … by steroid alone but died of acute exacerbation of unknown cause. These cases suggest that not only feathers but two or more kinds of bird-related antigens were involved in the sensitization immunology and development of bird fancier's disease, and that clinicians should perform thorough history taking with environmental surveillance relevant to birds.

Rooster feathering, androgenic alopecia, and hormone-dependent tumor growth: what is in common?

Different epithelial organs form as a result of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and share a common theme modulated by variations (Chuong ed. In Molecular Basis of Epithelial Appendage Morphogenesis, 1998). One of the major modulators is the sex hormone pathway that acts on the prototype signaling pathway to alter organ phenotypes. Here, we focus on how the sex hormone pathway may interface with epithelia morphogenesis-related signaling pathways. We first survey these sex hormone-regulated morphogenetic processes in various epithelial organs. Sexual dimorphism of hairs and feathers has impl…

Effects of body weight groupings on productivity, feather loss, and nervousness of caged hens.

Two experiments compared performance traits, feather loss, and nervousness of hens kept in contrasting homogeneous and heterogeneous body weight groupings. In addition, 15-day periods of daily uterine palpating vs nonpalpating for an egg in the uterus were compared for effects on egg production. Eighteen-wk-old pullets were weighed and characterized as light, medium, or heavy and housed in laying cages at 19 wk for a 50-wk production period. In Experiment 1, two hens were placed in each cage and there were three treatment groups: both light (L), mixed or 1 heavy and 1 light (X), and both heavy

Whole-genome sequencing of Chlamydia psittaci from Australasian avian hosts: A genomics approach to a pathogen that still ruffles feathers.

Chlamydia psittaci is a globally distributed veterinary pathogen with zoonotic potential. Although C. psittaci infections have been reported in various hosts, isolation and culture of Chlamydia is challenging, hampering efforts to produce contemporary global C. psittaci genomes. This is particularly evident in the lack of avian C. psittaci genomes from Australia and New Zealand. In this study, we used culture-independent probe-based whole-genome sequencing to expand the global C. psittaci genome catalogue. Here, we provide new C. psittaci genomes from two pigeons, six psittacines, and novel ho

Effects of L-Methionine and DL-Methionine on Growth Performance, Methionine-Metabolizing Enzyme Activities, Feather Traits, and Intestinal Morphology of Medium-Growing, Yellow-Feathered Chickens between 1 and 30 Days of Age.

This experiment investigated the effects of L-Methionine (L-Met) on growth performance, Met-metabolizing enzyme activity, feather traits, and small intestinal morphological characteristics, and compared these with DL-Methionine (DL-Met) for medium-growing, yellow-feathered broilers during the starter phase. Furthermore, the aim was to provide recommendations for the appropriate dietary Met levels in feed. A total of 1584 1-d broilers were randomly divided into 11 treatment groups with six replicates of 24 birds each: basal diet (CON, Met 0.28%), basal diet + L-Met (0.04%, 0.08%, 0.12%, 0.16%,

Determining a wide range of antibiotics and pesticides in poultry feathers using selective accelerated solvent extraction-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

This study established a detection method based on accelerated solvent extraction-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for determining residues of 3 chloramphenicols, 8 macrolides, 18 sulfonamides, 4 nitroimidazoles, 15 insecticides, and 22 fungicides in poultry feathers. The extraction solvent, methanol, was used for a static extraction time of 5 min, and repeated three times. Fifty milligrams of adsorbents C18/PSA (1 : 1, W/W) were added to the extraction cell to achieve simultaneous extraction and purification. The extraction efficiency of three solvents, methanol, acetonitrile and ethyl…

Comprehensive molecular and cellular studies suggest avian scutate scales are secondarily derived from feathers, and more distant from reptilian scales.

Amniote skin appendages such as feathers, hairs and scales, provide thermoregulation, physical protection and display different color patterns to attract a mate or frighten an adversary. A long-standing question is whether "reptile scale" and "avian leg scales" are of the same origin. Understanding the relation between avian feathers, avian scales and reptilian scales will enhance our understanding of skin appendage evolution. We compared the molecular and cellular profiles in chicken feather, chicken scales and alligator scales and found that chicken scutate scales are similar to chicken feat…

Revealing the spatial heterogeneity of the gut microbiota of red-feather ducks and their interaction with environmental microorganisms.

Ducks are one of important economic waterfowl species, and their gastrointestinal microbiota play crucial roles in nutrient metabolism, immune regulation, and host health maintenance. In this study, we collect 436 gastrointestinal content samples from red-feather ducks, including samples from the glandular stomach, muscular stomach, duodenum, ileum and cecum, as well as 10 environmental samples (water and soil). We then employed 16S rRNA gene sequencing to explore the gastrointestinal microbial communities of ducks and their interactions with environmental microbes from soil and water. The gas

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Functional Dyspepsia Overlap: Do Birds of a Feather Flock Together?

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and functional dyspepsia (FD) are 2 of the most prevalent upper gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in the Western world. Previous Rome definitions excluded patients with predominant heartburn from the definition of FD because they were considered to have GERD. However, more recent studies showed that heartburn and acid regurgitation are also common symptoms in patients with FD. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the prevalence of overlap between GERD and FD, the underlying pathophysiology and implications for treatment. METHODS
