Occurrence of strongyloidiasis in privately owned and sheltered dogs: clinical presentation and treatment outcome.

BACKGROUND: The increasing number of reports of human infections by Strongyloides stercoralis from a range of European countries over the last 20 years has spurred the interest of the scientific community towards this parasite and, in particular, towards the role that infections of canine hosts may play in the epidemiology of human disease. Data on the epidemiology of canine strongyloidiasis is currently limited, most likely because of the inherent limitations of current diagnostic methods. METHODS: Faecal samples were collected directly from the rectal ampulla of 272 animals of varying age a

Local and systemic inflammatory and immunologic reactions to cyathostomin larvicidal therapy in horses.

Encysted cyathostomin larvae are ubiquitous in grazing horses. Arrested development occurs in this population and can lead to an accumulation of encysted larvae. Large numbers of tissue larvae place the horse at risk for developing larval cyathostominosis. This disease complex is caused by mass emergence of these larvae and is characterized by a generalized acute typhlocolitis and manifests itself as a profuse protein-losing watery diarrhea with a reported case-fatality rate of about 50%. Two anthelmintic formulations have a label claim for larvicidal therapy of these encysted stages; moxidect

A high oxfendazole dose to control porcine cysticercosis: pharmacokinetics and tissue residue profiles.

Oxfendazole (OFZ) is efficacious for porcine cysticercosis at 30 mg/kg. OFZ is not registered to be used at this dose. The assessment of the OFZ and metabolites [(fenbendazole sulphone (FBZSO2), fenbendazole (FBZ)] plasma pharmacokinetic and tissue residue profiles after its oral administration to pigs and the withdrawal period for human consumption were reported. Forty-eight pigs allocated into two groups received OFZ (30 mg/kg) orally as a commercial (CF) or as experimental formulation (SMF). Samples (blood, muscle, liver, kidney and fat) were collected over 30 days post-treatment and analyz

Tongue worm (Pentastomida) infection in ball pythons (Python regius) – a case report.

Tongue worms (Pentastomida) are endoparasites causing pentastomiasis, an invasive disease representing a threat to exotic animals and humans. Animals acquire infection via the alimentary tract. In reptiles, the parasite is present in the lungs, resulting in symptoms from the respiratory system. Pentastomiasis may be asymptomatic, but nonspecific symptoms may occur at high parasite concentrations. Due to the harmful effects of many antiparasitic substances, tongue worm invasion in reptiles remains not fully treatable. Although pentasomiasis is rarely diagnosed in Poland, pentastomids were diagn

Efficacy of various anthelmintics against third-stage larvae of Ancylostoma caninum in the brain of mice.

In an experimental larval infection of Ancylostoma caninum in mice, the efficacy of various anthelmintics against the larvae migrated and established in the brain is reported for the first time. Albendazole and flubendazole were the most effective drugs. Thiabendazole, benacil, phenacizole, oxfendazole and mebendazole showed significant larvicidal activity. Tetramisole, levamisole, fenbendazole, Sch 18099, pyrantel pamoate, morantel tartrate and oxantel pamoate did not show any significant activity even at relatively high dose levels.

Relationship between the antitrichinellous effect of seven derivates of benzimidazolecarbamates and their chemical structure.

The efficacy of seven more recently developed anthelmintics of the benzimidazolecarbamate group, i. e., parbendazole, mebendazole, fenbendazole, oxibendazole, cambendazole, oxfendazole and albendazole, has been tested in a series of experiments on white mice artifically infected with Trichinella spiralis. Our results disclosed a relationship between their anthelmintic effect and their chemical structure. This finding might be of importance in a targeted synthesis of new, effective, derivates of benzimidazole, e. g., in the therapy of trichinellosis and in the choice of the most effective drug.

Anthelmintic efficacy on UK Thoroughbred stud farms.

Anthelmintic drugs have been applied indiscriminately to control horse nematodes for over 40 years. We undertook a comprehensive study to investigate efficacy of the four available broad-spectrum anthelmintic drugs on 16 Thoroughbred stud farms using the faecal egg count reduction test. Efficacy against strongyles was determined by calculating the percentage of reduction in faecal egg count between the group mean at Day 0 and Days 14-17 post-treatment and the 95% lower confidence intervals estimated by non-parametric bootstrapping. Individual strongyle faecal egg count reduction tests (n=429)

In Vitro Screening to Identify Anti-Toxoplasma Compounds and In Silico Modeling for Bioactivities and Toxicity.

Toxoplasmosis, which affects more than a billion people worldwide, is a common parasitic infection caused by the obligate intracellular parasite, Toxoplasmagondii. Current treatment strategies have several limitations, including unwanted side effects and poor efficacy. Therefore, newer therapies are needed for toxoplasmosis. Drug repurposing and screening of a vast array of natural and/or synthetic compounds is a viable option for antiparasitic drug discovery. In this study, we screened 62 compounds comprising natural products (NPs) and FDA-approved (FDA) drugs, to identify the hit compounds t

Ivermectin failure in the control of Oxyuris equi in a herd of ponies in France.

Drug resistance in equine gastro-intestinal parasitic nematodes has been reported throughout the world. While the focus is usually put on cyathostomins, observations of macrocylic lactone failure against Oxyuris equi have accumulated over the last decade. Here we report the failure of ivermectin in the control of O. equi in an experimental Welsh pony herd. In a first trial, 6 ponies previously drenched with moxidectin and showing patent O. equi infections were administered ivermectin and subsequently monitored for O. equi egg excretion over one month. This trial demonstrated a failure of iverm

Efficacy of commonly used anthelmintics: first report of multiple drug resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in Trinidad.

In Trinidad, small ruminant farms are semi-intensively managed under tropical conditions which support the development and survival of the infective stages of the helminths. Local farmers use anthelmintics to control gastrointestinal nematodes frequently. Frequent use of anthelmintics has the potential to select for populations of nematodes resistance to those chemicals. Hence, an attempt was made to study the efficacy of commonly used drugs on gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. Three farms situated in different counties in Trinidad were selected. Sheep aged 6-15 months and not treated with

A retrospective study of 11 cases of lungworm (Didelphostrongylus hayesi) infection in opossums (Didelphis virginiana).

A juvenile, female North American opossum (Didelphis virginiana) died of verminous pneumonia caused by Didelphostrongylus haysei despite aggressive treatment with oral fenbendazole, corticosteroids, and antibiotics. This prompted a retrospective study of lungworm infection in opossums, during which 19 additional necropsy reports from opossums were reviewed. Including the subject of this report, a total of 11 (55%) of these cases included a diagnosis of lungworm infection. This diagnosis was considered to have contributed to death in eight out of the 11 cases (73%). Histologically, 10 of the 11

Distribution of Four Parasitic Helminth Species in One Pen-Free, Egg-Laying Housing Facility, and the Corresponding Efficacy of Nutraceutical and Pharmaceutical Administrations.

In the spring of 2019, adult (75 wk old) brown laying hens from a commercial, pen-free, egg-laying facility (11,000 birds per house) located in northwest Arkansas were obtained for the purposes of sourcing robust and evenly dispersed cestode infections for anticipated anthelmintic evaluations. To that end, four birds from each of six discrete sites (northwest, northcentral, northeast, southwest, southcentral, and southeast) in one production barn were obtained on two occasions, 8 days apart, and necropsied for helminth counts. A definite, repeated, location-to-location variation in infection i

Deep amplicon sequencing screening benzimidazole resistance associated specific single nucleotide polymorphisms in isotype-1 β-tubulin from trichostrongyloids on ruminant farms in northeast Germany.

In many countries, widespread benzimidazole resistance in ruminant trichostrongyloids has severe effects on animal health and farm economy. In Germany, benzimidazole resistance occurs with high prevalence in sheep, but has barely been shown for cattle strongyles. In this study, the frequency of isotype-1 β-tubulin specific single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with benzimidazole resistance in trichostrongyloids on twelve sheep and nine cattle farms in northeast Germany was quantified using deep amplicon sequencing. On sheep farms, reliable data for Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circu

Anthelmintic resistance in nematodes of beef cattle in south-west Western Australia.

Anthelminthic resistance in nematodes of beef cattle is an emerging issue globally with implications for effective parasite control. The prevalence of resistance in beef cattle in the Mediterranean-style climatic zone of south-west Western Australia was assessed on 19 farms, using faecal egg count reduction tests. Pre-treatment faecal worm egg counts were compared with counts at 14 days after treatments with ivermectin (injectable), fenbendazole (oral), or levamisole (oral). A separately grazed group treated with topical ivermectin (pour-on) and sampled at 28 days was included as a comparison

BMP10 Knockdown Modulates Endothelial Cell Immunoreactivity by Inhibiting the HIF-1α Pathway in the Sepsis-Induced Myocardial Injury.

Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome triggered by a cascade of dysregulated immune responses. Sepsis-induced myocardial injury (SIMI) substantially impacts the survival time of septic patients. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathology of SIMI remain unclear. Immune-related differentially expressed genes in SIMI were identified through RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. The expression levels of hub genes were detected using reverse transcription quantitative PCR. BMP10 was knocked down in the lipopolysaccharide-induced mouse and cardiac microvascular endothelial cell

Case report: Halicephalobus gingivalis in a Tennessee pony.

A 17-year-old female grade pony presented to University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center in May of 2021 for evaluation of multifocal, firm, sessile, circular lesions of various diameters on the ventrum and flank. The lesions had been present for two weeks at presentation. An excisional biopsy found numerous adult and larval rhabditid nematodes most consistent with Halicephalobus gingivalis. PCR targeting a portion of the large ribosomal subunit confirmed this diagnosis. The patient was treated with a high dose course of ivermectin followed by fenbendazole. The patient began showing neuro

Crows protect visual working memory against interference.

Working memory, the ability to actively maintain and manipulate information across time, is key to intelligent behavior. Because of the limited capacity of working memory, relevant information needs to be protected against distracting representations. Whether birds can resist distractors and safeguard memorized relevant information is unclear. We trained carrion crows in a delayed match-to-sample task to memorize an image while resisting other, interfering stimuli. We found that the repetition of the sample stimulus during the memory delay improved performance accuracy and accelerated reaction
