Ocular involvement in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: a review.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), the most severe manifestation of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is considered the leading non-hereditary cause of mental retardation and neurological deficit in the Western world. There lie a huge associated human cost to both FASD victims and their families and a considerable financial burden. This problem is being tackled on many fronts including community awareness programs, biomarker development for fetal alcohol exposure, research into preventative treatments and the development of more robust diagnostic systems for the early detection of FASD. Althou

Cost of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder diagnosis in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is underdiagnosed in Canada. The diagnosis of FASD is not simple and currently, the recommendation is that a comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment of the individual be done. The purpose of this study was to estimate the annual cost of FASD diagnosis on Canadian society. METHODS: The diagnostic process breakdown was based on recommendations from the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Canadian Guidelines for Diagnosis. The per person cost of diagnosis was calculated based on the number of hours (estimated based on expert opinion) required by

Costs of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Although many programs targeting fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) are implemented, the province of Alberta is still lacking information on costs of FASD. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the costs of FASD in Alberta based on available US and Canadian research on costs of FASD, and Alberta data. METHODS: Two types of costs were estimated. The annual long-term economic cost of FASD, which referred to a projected amount of money incurred by lives of the cohort of children born with FASD each year, was estimated by multiplying the lifetime cost of caring for each child born with FASD wi

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: report of one case.

One seven-year-old aboriginal boy visited our outpatient department for survey of study difficulty. The physical examination revealed microcephaly, broad depressed nasal bridge, thin upper lip, smooth philtrum, epicanthal folds and clinodactyly. He also had mild mental retardation and abnormal findings on brain MRI. His mother had confirmed daily alcoholic consumption (72 to 144 gm) during pregnancy. Besides the short stature and microcephaly, the patient had developmental delay in language. According to the history, clinical presentation, and the finding of brain imaging, this case matches th

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: Canadian guidelines for diagnosis.

The diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is complex and guidelines are warranted. A subcommittee of the Public Health Agency of Canada's National Advisory Committee on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder reviewed, analysed and integrated current approaches to diagnosis to reach agreement on a standard in Canada. The purpose of this paper is to review and clarify the use of current diagnostic systems and make recommendations on their application for diagnosis of FASD-related disabilities in people of all ages. The guidelines are based on widespread consultation of expert practitioner

Neurocognitive and behavioral profile of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of cognitive deficit in developed countries and can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). This term encompasses a wide range of physical, mental, behavioral, and cognitive effects that result from damage caused by exposure to alcohol during intrauterine life. Alcohol consumption among the general population is common in Eastern European countries and especially among women at risk of social exclusion, who are the ones who lose or give up custody of their children. A high number of these children are adopted in Spain and many

Copy number variation in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is characterized by a combination of neurological, developmental, and congenital defects that may occur as a consequence of prenatal alcohol exposure. Earlier reports showed that large chromosomal anomalies may link to FASD. Here, we examined the prevalence and types of copy number variations (CNVs) in FASD cases previously diagnosed by a multidisciplinary FASD team in sites across Canada. We genotyped 95 children with FASD and 87 age-matched, typically developing controls on the Illumina Human Omni2.5 SNP (single nucleotide polymorphisms) array platform.

The avian embryo as a model for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) remains a leading preventable cause of structural birth defects and permanent neurodevelopmental disability. The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a powerful embryological research model, and was possibly the first in which the teratogenicity of alcohol was demonstrated. Pharmacologically relevant exposure to alcohol in the range of 20-70 mmol/L (20-80 mg/egg) disrupt the growth of chicken embryos, morphogenesis, and behavior, and the resulting phenotypes strongly parallel those of mammalian models. The avian embryo's direct accessibility has enabled novel i

A review of the physical features of the fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

The fetal alcohol spectrum of disorders (FASD) includes four diagnostic categories for the clinical consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in the unborn child. Physical features are necessary for the diagnosis of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and partial pFAS. Moreover, these features are specific and a diagnosis of FAS can be made even in the absence of knowledge of PAE. Not only growth deficits, microcephaly and the 3 facial features (short palpebral fissures, smooth philtrum and narrow vermillion of the upper lip) are characteristic, since other dysmorphic features particularly

Mental health issues in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: High numbers of individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) have been described as having mental health problems. AIMS: This article summarizes research about mental health problems in FASD and considers related developmental and environmental issues. METHOD: A computer-based literature search was conducted in the databases Medline, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, Academic Search Complete, and Education Resources Information Centre for articles addressing the prevalence and types of mental health issues in individuals affected by FASD. RESULTS: High rates of mental disord…

Hearing in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is the most prevalent human teratogen affected by early exposure of the fetus. Although not listed as a major part of the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), different texts list hearing loss as a characteristic of the FASD, based on several small studies. OBJECTIVE: To characterize hearing in children with FASD, diagnosed in the Motherisk Program in Toronto. DESIGN: Cross sectional cohort study. SETTING: Academic referral center. PATIENTS: Children 4-16 years of age that met criteria for FASD, with no other known risk factor for sensorineural hearing loss. A consec

Novel approaches to the diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

The diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a difficult task, especially in cases where clear, physical markers of in utero alcohol exposure are not apparent. Reviewed in the following paper are some older tools for screening alcohol use in pregnancy and present novel approaches to the diagnosis of FASD, including ethanol biomarker development to behavioural phenotyping. Improving current FASD diagnostic methodology through more novel approaches may provide the possibility of earlier and wider diagnosis, allowing intervention and treatment at stages where the advanced effects of alcoho
