OBJECTIVE: To perform a retrospective evaluation of the incidence of complications and adverse events during fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) in 2,820 examinations.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Subjects included in- and outpatients at Pisa University Hospital referred for FEES by other physicians due to dysphagia symptoms. Neurologic diseases were the most commonly diagnosed conditions in the patients tested (48.3%). Informed consent was obtained from all subjects.

A 45-year-old mentally retarded woman was discovered to produce a stridor upon inhalation. Fiberoptic laryngoscopic study revealed a smooth-surfaced, wide, and pedunculated tumor on the right arytenoid and the right aryepiglottic fold. Histopathological study revealed that the tumor was characterized by granulomatous inflammation. The condition was diagnosed as laryngeal sarcoidosis. The tumor was resected surgically. BACKGROUND: We evaluated the efficacy of tracheal patch reconstruction with a covered expandable metallic stent (EMS) with omentoplasty.
METHODS: After resecting the right half of the circumferential wall of two tracheal rings in adult beagle dogs, we inserted a covered EMS to reconstruct the defect interiorly. Then, through laparotomy, we made an omental pedicle flap and wrapped it around the EMS-interposed area. For comparison with the group without omentoplasty, we periodically examined the healing process macroscopically and histologically.

Flexible, passively deflectable fiberoptic ureteroscopes were used in 18 selected patients. The flexible endoscope must be stabilized with a cystoscope, flexible introducer sheath, or guide wire for placement through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. Irrigation through the instrument is beneficial in clearing the visual field and distending the lumen. These instruments can visualize the lumen of the ureter, and the medial and superior portion of the renal pelvis and intrarenal collecting systems. Their diagnostic value is limited to selected clinical situations.

A new method of fluorescence bronchoscopy is presented which uses a standard light source and a special filter combination to permit the carrying out of fluorescence bronchoscopy with a surface marking method by means of inhaling a fluorescein solution. On the basis of their own experience, totaling 540 examinations, the authors explain the advantages offered by the medium-length (100 cm) optical fibroscope in the diagnosis of colonic diseases. We describe a flexible fiberpyeloscope with which it is possible to extract renal pelvic and caliceal stones easily. The tip of the fiberpyeloscope can be deflected 90 degrees up or down from the basic position with a hand-manipulated angle deflector know on the fiberpyeloscope grip. This flexibility allows the inside of the renal pelvis to be observed clearly from every direction. Specially designed stone forceps can be inserted through the channel of the fiberpyeloscope into the renal pelvis to grasp pelvic stones under direct visual observation.
