Evaluation of hidden hearing loss in normal-hearing firearm users.

Some noise exposures resulting in temporary threshold shift (TTS) result in cochlear synaptopathy. The purpose of this retrospective study w … ported that they wore hearing protection either "all the time" or "almost all the time" while using firearms. The data suggest that consistent use of hearing protection during firearm use can effectively protect cochlear and neural measures of auditory function, including suprathreshold responses. The current results do not exclude the possibility that neu …

Handcrafted firearm suicide: About the unusual use of a mole gun.

The body of a man was found in a workshop at the back of his home, a metal pipe embedded in his chest. In the immediate vicinity of the body, among various tools, was a machine containing a holster hit of lead shot evoking a mole-trap-type "taupe gun" (mole gun). The findings at the scene and the presence of a metal tube, sinkers, and a flock in the chest are in favour of the use of a homemade firearm. The autopsy and CT scan revealed atypical ballistic thoracic trauma responsible for a dilaceration of both the heart and thoracic aorta that caused the death. The autopsy also found a contused w

Postmortem Computed Tomography in Firearm Homicides: A Retrospective Case Series.

Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) is integrated into the evaluation of decedents in several American medical examiner offices and medicolegal death investigative centers in many other countries. We retrospectively investigated the value of PMCT in a series of firearm homicide cases from a statewide centralized medical examiner's office that occurred during 2016. Autopsies were performed or supervised by board-certified forensic pathologists who reviewed the PMCT scans prior to autopsy. PMCT scans were re-evaluated by a forensic radiologist blinded to the autopsy findings and scored by body

[Temporary hearing threshold shift in policemen after firearm training].

BACKGROUND: The paper involves exposure to noise of the State Police officers connected with the use of firearms. The noise generated by these weapons is of short duration and high intensity. METHODS: The research was carried out during the sessions of firearm training of State Police officers to assess exposure to noise. RESULTS: The values of the various investigations, both audiometric and phonometric, carried out made it possible to demonstrate a significant exposure and a temporary increase in the threshold, above the frequency of 6000 Hz. CONCLUSION: Even taking account of the abateme…

Total situs inversus found coincidentally following a firearm injury.

Situs inversus totalis is very rare and usually diagnosed coincidentally as it does not affect the patient's life. Being unaware of the patient's condition can lead to undesirable results from the surgeon and patient's point of view when an emergency and forensic surgical intervention is required. We present a case who was operated on urgently for a firearm injury after receiving a preoperative diagnosis of situs inversus totalis. In conclusion, situs inversus totalis can cause difficulties for surgeons in case of emergency surgery and is usually diagnosed coincidentally. There are a few cases

Ultrastructural changes of the cochlea after oral and maxillofacial firearm wounds.

BACKGROUND: There have been reports that maxillofacial firearm wounds could induce hearing loss. The effects on the ultrastructure of the cochlea and cochlear nerves after oral and maxillofacial firearm wounds are still unclear. This experiment investigates the ultrastructural changes of the cochlea and cochlear nerve after oral and maxillofacial firearm wounds. METHODS: Twenty dogs were wounded by steel spheres or detonators to establish animal models of oral and maxillofacial firearms wound. At different times after trauma, the wounds were examined and the specimens of the cochlea and cochl…

Complex suicides involving the use of firearms and hanging: A retrospective study and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Suicides are the second most common cause of non-natural death in Germany after accidents. Most common is death by hanging, followed by the use of firearms. More frequent "simple" suicides in which one suicide method is used are distinguished from rare "complex" suicides, in which several methods are applied, whereby the combination of gunshot and strangulation is frequently chosen. Such cases require a thorough criminalistic and forensic medical examination to check the plausibility of assumed sequences of events and to detect covered-up homicides. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retro…

Mental Health Outcomes in Children after Parental Firearm Injury.

BACKGROUND: Every year, approximately 20,000 youths lose a parent to firearm injury in the United States. Many more youths have parents who sustain nonfatal firearm injuries. The effect of parents' firearm injuries on their children's health and health care is poorly understood. METHODS: Using U.S. commercial health insurance claims data from the 2007-2022 period, we identified youths, 1 to 19 years of age, whose parents had received treatment for firearm injury (exposure). Each youth with exposure was matched with up to five control youths on the basis of year, month, youth sex, metropolitan

3D printed firearm identification: A comparison of machine learning models.

The production of three-dimensional (3D) printed firearms is concerning as these objects are unregulated and untraceable due to the lack of serial numbers. Criminals can obtain 3D models online or design their own versions using computer-aided design (CAD) software. While prior research and law enforcement efforts have focused primarily on analyzing tangible printed objects, investigations analyzing digital evidence are currently limited. This study presents a proof-of-concept approach for classifying firearm and non-firearm objects using geometric information extracted from g-code files, whic…

A novel and robust deep learning model for sibling firearm matching.

In this paper, our goal is to develop a novel and robust method for firearm sibling matching from cartridge-case head (in specific firing pin region) photometric stereo imagery. We employ a dataset of unprecedented scope compared to prior literature, incorporating genuine real-world case work, including cartridge cases fired from aged, worn, or deliberately modified firearms across different time periods, making it the most challenging setting. Methodologically, the study introduces a triplet-loss framework with semi-hard negative mining and an explicit margin term, combined with a pre-contras…

Caregiver-Perceived Appropriateness of Discussing Firearm Storage in the Healthcare Setting.

OBJECTIVE: Firearms are the leading cause of death for children in the US - secure storage decreases morbidity and mortality. Though effective at improving storage, healthcare providers (HCPs) seldom discuss secure storage, partly due to concern that it will damage the caregiver-provider relationship. We sought to1) Describe caregiver-perceived appropriateness of HCP firearm storage counseling, and 2) Identify variables associated with perceived appropriateness. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2025 Colorado Firearm Injury Prevention Survey (COFIPS), administered online …

Pediatric intestinal failure due to firearm injury: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric short bowel syndrome (SBS) is often secondary to congenital conditions such as malrotation with midgut volvulus, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, or necrotizing enterocolitis. Traumatic injury secondary to firearms is a less common cause of SBS encountered in the United States. We aim to describe the morbidity affecting four children (ages 9-16 years) with SBS secondary to firearm injury. CASE REPORTS: All patients had extensive injury directly to the bowel and/or the intestinal blood supply, requiring parenteral and/or enteral nutrition at discharge. All patients had …

Variation in Acute Pain Management of Youth With Nonfatal Firearm Injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injuries are a leading cause of morbidity among youth, yet acute pain management practices have not been well characterized. Our objective was to evaluate acute pain medication administration by key sociodemographic characteristics and injury severity after nonfatal firearm injuries. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional analysis utilizing Pediatric Health Information System at 40 US children's hospitals from 2016 to 2021. We included inpatient and emergency department (ED) only encounters for patients 0-21 years old with a firearm injury diagnosis. The main

Firearm injury and the Deloyers procedure: case report and literature review.

Following extended colon resections, it may not always be possible to perform colorectal anastomosis. The Deloyers procedure, which involves the transposition of the right colon, has been identified as a viable solution. This report aims to discuss the circumstances under which the Deloyers procedure was performed, as well as to evaluate the early and late postoperative outcomes, by reviewing cases conducted between 2010 and 2023. In a 22-year-old female patient who suffered major organ and tissue loss (with injuries to the sigmoid colon, descending colon, transverse colon, and mesentery) due
