Concentrated fish oil ameliorates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by regulating fibroblast growth factor 21-adiponectin axis.

OBJECTIVES: The fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21)-adiponectin axis participates in energy hemostasis and obesity-related syndrome. The present study aimed to investigate whether concentrated fish oil (FO) intervention could alleviate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) via the regulation of the FGF21-adiponectin axis. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 61 patients with NAFLD, age 55.9 ± 15.6 y, were randomly divided into two groups: FO (3 g/d; n = 30) and corn oil (CO; 3 g/d; n = 31), which served as the control group. RESULTS: After a 3-mo intervention, there were significan

The protective effect of fish oil lipid emulsions on intestinal failure-associated liver disease in a rat model of short-bowel syndrome.

PURPOSE: Pediatric patients with intestinal failure need long-term parenteral nutrition (PN), but this nutritional support causes liver dysfunction, such as intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD). Several studies have shown that the lipid emulsion produced by soybean oil (SO) is associated with the occurrence of IFALD. In this study, we evaluated the effect of SO and fish oil (FO) lipid emulsion on hepatic steatosis. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats underwent jugular vein catheterization and were divided into three groups: sham operation with normal chow (Sham group), 80% small bowel

[An outbreak of lipoid liver degeneration (LLD) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in a fish farm and attempts to cure the disease (author's transl)].

A description of a field experiment on the therapeutic effect of 4 different drugs against lipoid liver degeneration is given in a natural outbreak of the disease in a fish farm. The diagnosis was based on pathological and histopathological changes in the liver and characterized on the basis of the degree of ceroid deposited in the liver cells. The size and weight of the fish had no influence on the deposition, but it was shown that LLD caused a higher mortality in Atlantic salmon than in rainbow trout, showing a weekly mortality of 2.5 and 0.3%, respectively. In the field experiments therapeu

Association of fish oil supplementation with risk of incident severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a prospective study of 488 888 individuals.

Prospective evidence linking n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) risk remains limited. In this cohort study of 488 888 UK Biobank participants, we evaluated associations of fish oil supplementation (a key source of n-3 PUFAs) with severe NAFLD incidence using Cox proportional hazards models. Mediation analysis evaluated the roles of serum metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers. Genetic interaction analyses included polymorphisms linked to n-3 PUFA metabolism. Over 12.3 years of follow-up, 5671 participants developed severe NAFLD. Fi

The Potential of Fish Protein Hydrolysate Supplementation in Nile Tilapia Diets: Effects on Growth and Health Performance, Disease Resistance, and Farm Economic Analysis.

Fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) has shown immense potential as a dietary protein supplement and immunostimulant in aquaculture, especially in Nile tilapia production. Four isoproteic diets (30% crude protein) were prepared by including FPH at varying percentages (0%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2%). Nile tilapia fed with FPH diets for 90 days, and their growth performance, feed utilization, blood biochemistry, liver and gut morphology, and resistance against Streptococcus iniae were investigated. The findings revealed that diets physical attributes such as pellet durability index and water stability were rem

Soy Protein Alleviates Hypertension and Fish Oil Improves Diastolic Heart Function in the Han:SPRD-Cy Rat Model of Cystic Kidney Disease.

Abnormalities in cardiac structure and function are very common among people with chronic kidney disease, in whom cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death. Dietary soy protein and fish oil reduce kidney disease progression in the Han:SPRD-Cy model of cystic renal disease. However, the effects of these dietary interventions in preventing alterations in cardiac structure and function due to kidney disease (reno-cardiac syndrome) in a cystic kidney disease model are not known. Therefore, weanling Han:SPRD-Cy diseased (Cy/+) and normal (+/+) rats were given diets containing either casein

Compound heterozygosity (G71R/R140H) in the lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) gene results in an intermediate phenotype between LCAT-deficiency and fish-eye disease.

The esterification of free cholesterol (FC) in plasma, catalyzed by the enzyme lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT; EC 2.3.1.43), is a key process in lipoprotein metabolism. The resulting cholesteryl esters (CE) represent the main core lipids of low (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL). Primary (familial) LCAT-deficiency (FLD) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by the complete or near absence of LCAT activity. In fish-eye disease (FED), residual LCAT activity is still detectable. Here, we describe a 32-year-old patient with corneal opacity, very low LCAT activity,

Deficiency of zebrafish fgf20a results in aberrant skull remodeling that mimics both human cranial disease and evolutionarily important fish skull morphologies.

The processes that direct skull remodeling are of interest to both human-oriented studies of cranial dysplasia and evolutionary studies of skull divergence. There is increasing awareness that these two fields can be mutually informative when natural variation mimics pathology. Here we describe a zebrafish mutant line, devoid of blastema (dob), which does not have a functional fgf20a protein, and which also presents cranial defects similar to both adaptive and clinical variation. We used geometric morphometric methods to provide quantitative descriptions of the effects of the dob mutation on sk

Reversal of parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease with a fish oil-based lipid emulsion (Omegaven) in an adult dependent on home parenteral nutrition.

Patients with intestinal failure and short bowel syndrome usually require chronic parenteral nutrition (PN). PN is associated with risks, including infections, vascular thrombosis, and liver disease. PN-associated liver disease (PNALD) can progress from steatosis to chronic hepatitis and ultimately to cirrhosis. The etiology of PNALD is not completely understood. Therapies for PNALD include carbohydrate or lipid calorie reduction, antibiotics, or the use of ursodeoxycholic acid. When these efforts fail, therapeutic options are limited and liver transplantation may be required. The transition f

Protective immunity against iridovirus disease in mandarin fish, induced by recombinant major capsid protein of infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus.

Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) is the causative agent of a disease causing high mortality and economic losses in mandarin fish, Siniperca chuatsi in China. But little information about vaccine development against ISKNV disease is available. In this study the gene encoding the major capsid protein (MCP), which is predominant structural component of the iridovirus particles, was cloned into a temperature induction prokaryotic expression vector pBV220 and a recombinant protein was detected about 50 kDa in molecular weight and accounted for 23% of total proteins of whole cell.

The molecular epidemiology of iridovirus in Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) and dwarf gourami (Colisa lalia) from distant biogeographical regions suggests a link between trade in ornamental fish and emerging iridoviral diseases.

Iridoviruses have emerged over 20 years to cause epizootics in finfish and amphibians in many countries. They may have originated in tropical Asia and spread through trade in farmed food fish or ornamental fish, but this has been difficult to prove. Consequently, MCP, ATPase and other viral genes were sequenced from archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues from farmed Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) that died during an epizootic in 2003 and from diseased gouramis that had been imported from Asia. There was almost complete homology (99.95%) over 4,527 bp between Murray cod i

Metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum Dubois, 1936 (Diplostomidae) infecting freshwater fish worldwide: infection patterns, host-parasite interactions, distribution range, and disease control.

This study aimed to investigate the infection patterns, host-parasite interactions, distribution ranges, and control diseases by Posthodiplostomum metacercariae in freshwater fish on a global scale. We analyzed parasitological data from 203 freshwater fish species across 17 orders and 44 families, predominantly representing the Leuciscidae and Cichlidae families. The analysis identified a total of 10 Posthodiplostomum metacercariae species, although several studies did not identify the parasites to the species level. In host fish, prevalence, intensity and abundance levels of Posthodiplostomum

Impact of Surveillance and Depopulation Strategies on Fish Disease Transmission Among Net-Cage Farms Near the Tongyeong Coast Based on a Spatiotemporal Hybrid Approach.

Infectious diseases among fish farms present significant challenges to fish health and production. Horizontal transmission serves as one of the main mechanisms driving outbreaks in these settings. The dynamics of horizontal transmission are influenced by pathogen properties, host characteristics and environmental factors. Additionally, the implementation of epidemiological interventions can further shape the patterns and consequences of infectious disease spread. However, there is a paucity of studies assessing how specific epidemiological measures, such as timely disease surveillance and stra

Co-Prevalence of Virulence and Pathogenic Potential in Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Aeromonas spp. from Diseased Fishes with In Silico Insight on the Virulent Protein Network.

Aeromonas species exhibit widespread presence in food, poultry, and aquaculture. They are major multi-drug-resistant fish pathogens. This study aims to identify Aeromonas species harbouring virulence genes aerolysin, flagellin, and lipase from diseased fishes of Assam wetlands with association with antibiotic resistance and in vivo pathogenicity. One hundred and thirty-four Aeromonas strains were isolated and thirty representative species identified using genus-specific 16S rRNA gene amplification. A. veronii was most prevalent (53.7%) followed by A. hydrophila (40.2%), A. caviae (4.47%), and
