The synthetic cobalt-containing oxygen carriers are briefly reviewed as well as some of the heavier metal systems. The earlier chemistry of the iron complexes with dioxygen is discussed. Some of the more recent results on the reversible binding of oxygen to iron complexes is presented. Initial results showed that low temperatures and steric hindrance in the vicinity of the binding site were important parameters. This is a study of the reaction of large nerves to implantation using a flexible, thin-film cuff electrode. Cuff electrodes were implanted on the sciatic nerve of three cats. An implantation period of six weeks allowed sufficient time for any injury responses in the nerve and connective tissue sheath around the cuff to develop. The electrode came off the nerve in one of the cats. In the remaining two cats, gross observation following explantation of the electrodes revealed encapsulation of the cuffs without swelling of nerve tissue. The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the only Arctic land mammal that dives into water to hunt. Despite thermal insulation provided by blubber and fur layers and low Arctic temperatures, their fur is typically observed to be free of ice. INTRODUCTION: To demonstrate, with the aid of retinal imaging, an abnormal post-operative macular appearance caused by the presence of a "fragmented" pre-retinal bubble of octafluoropropane (C3F8) masquerading as retained subretinal perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL).
METHODS: This is an interventional case presentation.
RESULTS: Colour fundus photography high-resolution spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and clinical progress demonstrate that the abnormal reflex was caused by the presence of a small fragment of C3F8 becoming lodged at the pre-foveal area.

In this study a new method has been developed to administer sulfur dioxide to experimental animals in order to induce cough for testing antitussives. Sulfur dioxide was packed into aerosol cans equipped with a 75 microliter dosage nozzle. Sulfur dioxide was diluted with the fluorocarbon mixture and the content varied from 15-19% w/w. The quantities of chlorofluorocarbons (FCC's) used commercially in the United States and globally are reviewed, and estimates of environmental release from the applications are made. The results indicate that sizable quantities of the FCC's that have been produced have not yet reached the environment and that regulation of U.S. applications would partly reduce, but not end, the possible destruction of stratospheric ozone.

The ability of an oxygen saturated fluorocarbon, perfluorodecalin (C10F18), to raise the arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) of anesthetized dogs, was tested by peritoneal lavage in normoxic and hypoxic animals. While breathing room air, five of six animals showed an increased PaO2 of 5-10 torr above reference values. In cases of mild hypoxia, increases of 5-25 torr were observed. No increase in PaO2 was seen when hypoxia was severe. A mathematical model was used to analyze the data and determine a transport coefficient (k).
