[Mirror movement due to the medial frontal lobe lesion].

We reported a case with acquired mirror movement in upper limbs due to the lesion of right medial frontal lobe including supplementary motor area, and also discussed a possible mechanism underlying it. A 59-year-old right-handed woman developed left hemiparesis caused by cerebral hemorrhage in the right frontoparietal lobe, on April 5, 1981. She had right hemiparesis and right hemianopsia due to cerebral hemorrhage in the left parieto-occipital lobe, 13 days later. As the patient was recovering from paresis, mirror movement appeared on upper limbs. The features of the mirror movement of this c…

[Frontal lobe-type dementia associated with motor neuron disease].

A case of presenile dementia with dominant frontal disfunction, progressive aphasia and Motor Neuron Disease with prominent bulbar signs is reported. Considering the clinical examination, the measurements of the regional cerebral flow (SPECT) and the histological appearances, we suggest the diagnosis of Dementia of Frontal Lobe Type and Motor Neuron Disease. We reviewed other disorders labelled Primary Frontal or Fronto-temporal Dementias and we discuss this new dementia and the difficulty in its classification.

Can absence status epilepticus be of frontal lobe origin?

Five women with an unclassifiable nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) characterized by young age at onset, prolonged confusions, focal motor seizures, and both generalized spike-and-wave discharges and focal epileptic discharges on the EEG were studied with video-EEG monitoring. Electrographically, the NCSE originated from the left frontal lobe in 4 patients, and the left hemisphere with multifocal seizure discharges in 1 patient. Focal motor seizures seemed to originate from the left hemisphere in all 5 patients, particularly from its anterior part in 3 of them. Results show that the NCSE…

Developmental impact of frontal lobe injury in middle childhood.

Executive function of frontal lobe systems, like intelligent behavior, appears to demonstrate two major features: it is adaptive and goal-directed. Disruption of executive function following injury to the frontal lobes in childhood might be predicted to impact the trajectory of normal cognitive, behavioral, and social development. Case studies of two children injured at different ages showed the primary developmental impact to involve the behavioral and social realms. While cognitive development may be suspected to also be considerably influenced, assessment of changes in cognitive abilities b…

The comportmental learning disabilities of early frontal lobe damage.

Two adult patients are described who suffered bilateral prefrontal damage early in life and who subsequently came to psychiatric attention because of severely aberrant behaviour. A battery of developmental psychology paradigms (not previously used to assess neurologically impaired individuals) showed that social and moral development of these 2 patients was arrested at an immature stage. In comparison with other types of brain damage which disrupt cognitive development, frontal damage acquired early in life appears to provide the neurological substrate for a special type of learning disability

Episodic rage and aggression attributed to frontal lobe seizures.

Episodic rage and aggression in mentally handicapped people have typically been very difficult to eliminate or even reduce. Behaviour modification programmes designed to reduce extremely aggressive outbursts are based on various theories which presume these behaviours are volitional. This paper considers the possibility that these behaviours are involuntary and probably due to frontal lobe dysfunction. Twenty extremely aggressive cases are reported which present the clinical picture of frontal lobe seizures. Specific eye, face, trunk and limb movements plus vocalizations are extracted from the…

In contrast, frontal lobe damage sometimes results in gross disinhibition and cortical overresponsiveness and, thus, speech release due to the flooding of the language axis (and other cortical regions) with tangential, fantastical, and grandiose associations. Frontal lobe dysfunction as a predictor of depression and anxiety following temporal lobe epilepsy surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Predictors of psychiatric outcome following TLE surgery have proved elusive and represent a current challenge in the practice of TLE surgery. This prospective study investigated whether frontal lobe dysfunction is predictive of poorer psychiatric outcomes. METHODS: Forty-nine unilateral TLE surgical patients were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen (BDI-FS) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) preoperatively and 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Measures of intellectual function, semantic knowledge, memory and executive function were completed preoperatively, at 6 a…

Altered structural and causal connectivity in frontal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Albeit the few resting-state fMRI neuroimaging studies in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) patients, these studies focused on functional connectivity. The aim of this current study was to examine the effective connectivity based on voxel-based morphometry in FLE patients. METHODS: Resting-state structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired from 19 FLE patients and 19 age and gender-matched healthy controls using the 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (3.0 T MRI). The investigations were done by acquiring the structural information through voxel-based …

Predicting progression in the late onset frontal lobe syndrome.

ABSTRACTA late onset frontal lobe syndrome (LOF) refers to a clinical syndrome with apathy, disinhibition, or stereotypical behavior arising in middle or late adulthood. Diagnostics are challenging, and both clinicians and patients need reliable predictors of progression to improve clinical guidance. In this longitudinal multicenter and genetically screened prospective study, 137 LOF patients with frontal behavior (FBI score≥11) and/or stereotypical behavior (SRI≥10) were included. Progression was defined as institutionalization, death, or progression of frontal or temporal atrophy at magnetic…

Altered Dynamic Functional Network Connectivity in Frontal Lobe Epilepsy.

Frontal lobe epilepsy has recently been associated with disrupted brain functional connectivity; variations among various resting-state networks (RSNs) across time remains largely unclear. This study applied dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) analysis to investigate functional patterns in the temporal and spatial domains of various functional systems in FLE. Resting-state fMRI data were acquired from 19 FLE patients and 18 controls. Independent component analysis was used to decompose RSNs, which were grouped into seven functional systems. Sliding windows and clustering approach we…

Francisco de Castro: Localizationism, intelligence and the frontal lobe.

This article addresses the largely unknown legacy of Francisco de Castro regarding the neurological sciences. His essay "Psychogenic Cortical Centers", written in 1881 for his admission to the Imperial Academy of Medicine in Rio de Janeiro, is a refined appreciation of the theory of localized cortical functions that was in evidence in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Impaired pantomime in schizophrenia: association with frontal lobe function.

INTRODUCTION: Gestures are important for nonverbal communication and were shown to be impaired in schizophrenia. Two categories of gestures can be differentiated: pantomime on verbal command and imitation of seen gestures. There is evidence that the neural basis of these domains may be distinct, pantomime being critically dependent on prefrontal cortex function. The aim of the study was to investigate gestural deficits in schizophrenia and their association with frontal lobe function and motor performance. METHODS: In 30 schizophrenia patients, gesture performance was assessed by the comprehe…

Autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy--a critical overview.

Autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) is an idiopathic epilepsy, with a spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from brief, stereotyped, sudden arousals to more complex dystonic-dyskinetic seizures. Video-polysomnography allows a correct differential diagnosis. There is no difference between sporadic nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) and ADNFLE in the clinical and neurophysiological findings. ADNFLE is the first idiopathic epilepsy for which a genetic basis has been identified. Mutations have been found in two genes (CHRNA4 and CHRNB2) coding for neuronal nicoti…

January 2004: elderly Filipino man with frontal lobe tumor.

A 74-year-old Filipino man presented with new-onset partial-complex seizures. Eight months earlier he had a subtotal gastrectomy for adenocarcinoma classified as T1 N0M0 stage IA. He was irradiated. Two months later, he became confused and developed rhythmic, seizure-like movements of the extremities. A head CT revealed a 2 cm. right frontal lobe mass. On MRI, the mass exhibited ring enhancement and was surrounded by edematous white matter. The patient denied headache, weakness or constitutional symptoms. CT of the chest and abdomen revealed no evidence of metastatic spread or other abnormalit…

[MRI findings in schizophrenic patient with frontal lobe atrophy].

In schizophrenic patients, cognitive and behavioral deficits are often associated with frontal lobe dysfunction. By functional neuroimaging studies, abnormalities of the frontal lobe (especially the prefrontal lobe) have been detected in schizophrenic patients. As for morphological changes on neuroimaging, lateral lobe atrophy and enlargement of the lateral ventricles or third ventricle are often reported, but there is no consensus as to whether frontal lobe atrophy is seen more frequently in schizophrenic patients compared with normal controls. The reasons for this disagreement include variat…
