Myiasis is the infestation of skin bythe larvae of flies. In North America cases are caused by the botfly (Cuterebra) and occur most commonly in children. The usual presentation is a subcutaneous abscess, and for this reason these patients may be referred to surgeons. Knowledge of this entity can avoid delays in diagnosis, unnecessary incision and drainage procedures, and unnecessary courses of antibiotics.

Aeromonas salmonicida (A. salmonicida) is a facultative Gram-negative bacillus, inhabiting in water. It is a common source of furunculosis and septicemia in fish. Report on the human infection with this organism is rare. A male farmer referred with weakness and intermittent fever. He had cardiac valves' regurgitation due to fever with rheumatic heart disease. He had a history of swimming in well water. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed a mobile mass of 1.3 × 0.9 cm attached to the mitral valve chordae, suggestive of a vegetation. Aeromonas salmonicida was isolated from the blood. A…

The skin is a highly exposed organ during vacation times, especially during travel to countries with subtropical and tropical climates. Prolonged stay in these countries significantly increases the risk of contracting rarely seen dermatoses such as leishmaniasis, larva migrans and myiasis. The bites of various flies may provoke itching and excoriations that may be infected with Staphylococcus aureus and/or hemolytic streptococci, resulting in impetigo, furunculosis or erysipelas. Elderly persons spending weeks in the tropical sun may develop drug-induced phototoxic or photoallergic rash due to…

One hundred five Staphylococcus aureus infections occurring in 79 children who were seen in a private office practice were evaluated for response to antibiotic therapy. The value of in vitro disk susceptibility testing in directing antibiotic selection in treatment failures was also examined. Of the total episodes studied, the types of infection studied included vesicular pyoderma (48%), secondary pyoderma (13%), bullous pyoderma (5%), furunculosis (14%), carbunculosis (12%), cellulitis (3%), suppurative otitis media (4%), and paronychia (2%). Comparative treatment efficacy was obtained with p…

UNLABELLED: Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL) toxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are associated with skin abscesses and furunculosis, with necrotizing pneumonia being a relatively rare problem. Here, we describe a fatal case of necrotizing pneumonia in a 14-year-old child who presented initially with sore throat and pyrexia. He deteriorated rapidly, developing hypotension, multiple organ failure and purpura fulminans. S. aureus was isolated from the tracheal aspirate, which was found to be positive for PVL, toxic shock syndrome toxins (TSST) 1 and 2 and staphylococcal…

Teicoplanin is a new glycopeptide antibiotic chemically related to vancomycin with a similar bactericidal activity against aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria but with a longer plasma elimination half-life of 40-100 h allowing a once daily parenteral administration. In an open prospective study, we treated 20 patients with skin and soft tissue infections such as erysipelas, cellulitis, folliculitis and furunculosis with a a success rate of 84%. The peak and trough serum levels of teicoplanin were above the minimal inhibitory concentrations of the bacteria isolated and the therapeutic …

Dermatobia homininis is the most common cause of furuncular myiasis in Central and South America. It is diagnosed based on a history of travel to an endemic region and the characteristic cutaneous lesion. We present a 54-year-old patient who presented with both a travel history and cutaneous findings of furuncular myiasis.

Otitis externa is one of the most common conditions seen in the otolaryngology practice. It encompasses a wide range of conditions, from those that cause mild inflammation and discomfort to those that are life-threatening. The management of these conditions requires a clear understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the ear canal, the microbiology of pathogens and familiarity with the clinical presentation.

Cutaneous myiasis (myia: Greek word for fly) is an infestation of fly maggots in the skin. A case of human botfly (Dermatobia hominis) myiasis presenting to a Canadian emergency department is described. Typically, it presents as an apparent persistently infected skin abscess or insect bite. As the botfly is indigenous only to Central and South America, the condition is unfamiliar to most North American physicians. However, the rapidity of international air travel permits this exotic tropical infestation to present in any region. Obtaining a history of recent travel to an endemic area is the ke

Dipterous fly maggots of different species live worldwide as parasites in hooved mammals. In the host the larval development causes typical boils, i.e., abscesses including the larvae. As a result of increasing tourist traffic, travelers can also bring back to Germany tropical types of myiasis.

We report a case of a tourist, coming back from Tanzania, who presented with a foruncle on the left thigh diagnosed as a bacterial infection, which eventually turned out to be a myiasis foruncle. The patient said he had sat on the ground in short trousers. The lesion was covered with petroleum jelly and the larva was observed migrating from the lesion and subsequently extracted with forceps. The morphology of larval spiracles allowed to characterize the species as Cordylobia anthropophaga. Behaviour of the most common myiasis-producing flies, their life cycle and the way of infection are brief
