Molecular analyses of human rabies virus associated with encephalitis in two children in Gabon.

Rabies is a zoonotic neurological life-threatening neglected tropical disease present worldwide, and Gabon is listed as an endemic country. However, despite strong clinical suspicion in humans and molecular confirmation of rabies virus (RABV) infections in dogs for several decades, no molecularly confirmed human case in Gabon has ever been reported. In this study, we describe two cases of human rabies and provide the first molecular diagnostic report on suspected human rabies cases in Gabon. Our results showed that the RABVs isolated from the patients are closely related to other RABV strains …

Assessment of Imatinib in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia in Gabon: a cohort of 17 cases.

The prognosis for chronic myeloid leukemia, the first hematologic malignancy for which successful targeted therapy has been developed, has changed markedly in the West. In developing countries, however, prognosis remains poor, mainly because of lack of access to treatment. The effort made by some nongovernmental organizations to distribute first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors free of charge has changed this situation in some regions, notably in sub-Saharan Africa and Gabon in particular. We report the results in a cohort of 17 patients.

Retrospective analysis of antimicrobial resistance and bacterial spectrum of infection in Gabon, Central Africa.

BACKGROUND: Physicians depend on reliable information on the local epidemiology of infection and antibiotic resistance rates to guide empiric treatment in critically ill patients. As these data are scarce for Central Africa, we performed a retrospective analysis of microbiological findings from a secondary care hospital in Gabon. METHODS: Microbiological reports from 2009 to 2012 were used to assess the non-susceptibility rates of the three most common isolates from six major types of infections (bloodstream, ear-eye-nose-throat, surgical site, skin and soft tissue, urinary tract and wound in…

Markers of Loa loa infection in permanent residents of a loiasis endemic area of Gabon.

Different markers of infection were analyzed in 56 permanent residents of a Loa loa endemic village in Gabon. The population was divided into those with parasitological evidence of L. loa infection and those with no history of loiasis over the period of observation (c. 5 years). 26.7% of villagers had L. loa microfilariae, 33.9% had an ocular passage of an adult worm, and 17.8% had calabar oedema. Several other clinical symptoms were present in both groups of individuals, but none was considered to be pathognomonic for L. loa infection. Most of the villagers were polyparasitized, with Plasmodi…

From the Laboratory to the Field: Assessing the Usability of the NTDscope in the Tropical Rainforest Region of Gabon.

In regions where Loa loa is coendemic with lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, mass drug administration of ivermectin has posed a risk for serious adverse reactions in individuals with high microfilarial loads. To overcome this problem, easy-to-use point-of-care diagnostic tools are crucial for identifying individuals at risk in population-based control programs. The NTDscope is a device that uses smartphone components for video microscopy and may support decentralized L. loa microfilariae screening under field conditions. This study evaluated the usability and operational feasibility of

Occurrence of multiple infections of rodents with parasites and bacteria in the Sibang Arboretum, Libreville, Gabon.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Rodents are carriers or reservoirs of various bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and ectoparasites. Given the proximity of various rodent species and humans, there is a potential for the transmission of pathogens. Data on ecto- and endo-parasite prevalence in rodent populations in Gabon are limited. To fill this gap, we conducted a study in Libreville to investigate the occurrence of ecto- and endo-parasites in rodents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We captured and euthanized 68 rodents belonging to the genus Praomys and examined their ecto- and endo-parasite fauna, dissected their gas…
