Markerless gait analysis through a single camera and computer vision.

The assessment of gait performance using quantitative measures can yield crucial insights into an individual's health status. Recently, computer vision-based human pose estimation has emerged as a promising solution for markerless gait analysis, as it allows for the direct extraction of gait parameters from videos. This study aimed to compare the lower extremity kinematics and spatiotemporal gait parameters obtained from a single-camera-based markerless method with those acquired from a marker-based motion tracking system across a healthy population. Additionally, we investigated the impact of…

Kinematic movement and balance parameter analysis in neurological gait disorders.

BACKGROUND: Neurological gait disorders are mainly classified based on clinical observation, and therefore difficult to objectify or quantify. Movement analysis systems provide objective parameters, which may increase diagnostic accuracy and may aid in monitoring the disease course. Despite the increasing wealth of kinematic movement and balance parameter data, the discriminative value for the differentiation of neurological gait disorders is still unclear. We hypothesized that kinematic motion and balance parameter metrics would be differently altered across neurological gait disorders when c

Foot pressure-based analysis of gait while using a smartphone.

BACKGROUND: The number of incidents related to walking while using smartphones is rising. However, it is not clear how smartphone usage might affect a gait pattern in terms of the foot pressure, and this may address the mechanism leading to incidents while using smartphones. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do the characteristics of walking while using a smartphone affect foot pressure patterns? METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 40 healthy young participants and investigated the walking speed, step length, coefficient of variance of the walking cycle (CV), anteroposterior length of

Human Gait Analysis and Prediction Using the Levenberg-Marquardt Method.

A high-accuracy gait data prediction model can be used to design prosthesis and orthosis for people having amputations or ailments of the lower limb. The objective of this study is to observe the gait data of different subjects and design a neural network to predict future gait angles for fixed speeds. The data were recorded via a Biometrics goniometer, while the subjects were walking on a treadmill for 20 seconds each at 2.4 kmph, 3.6 kmph, and 5.4 kmph. The data were then imported into Matlab, filtered to remove movement artifacts, and then used to design a neural network with 60% data for t

Valgus knee stress in lumbosacral myelomeningocele: a gait-analysis evaluation.

Twenty-five independent community-ambulating patients with lumbosacral-level myelomeningocele (N = 50 limbs) underwent gait analysis. The limbs of these patients were divided into two groups based on thigh-foot angle (TFA): Group I (n = 20) had marked external tibial torsion, TFA > or = 20 degrees, and group II had TFA between 10 and 20 degrees. Ten limbs were excluded because of neutral or internal alignment. Twenty normal limbs with TFA = 10 degrees served as controls. An abnormal internal varus knee stress during stance was identified in all group I limbs and 12 (70%) of 20 limbs group II l…

Smartphone-based vestibular & gait analysis for remote fall risk assessment.

Dizziness and vertigo are among the most common reasons for clinical consultation worldwide and represent key risk factors for falls, particularly in neurologic and neuroorthopedic patient populations. Early identification of balance and gait impairments is therefore relevant for fall prevention. However, access to established diagnostic tools such as video-oculography (VOG) and motion analysis systems remains limited due to cost, technical complexity, and the need for specialized personnel, especially in resource-constrained settings. This work proposes a conceptual framework for smartphone-b

How many strides are needed for reliable markerless gait analysis?

BACKGROUND/AIM: Markerless motion capture is an emerging tool for gait analysis. In some populations, e.g., older adults, traditional gait analysis poses practical challenges, such as reduced assessment tolerance, and the number of strides collected can be limited. This study aimed to investigate the influence of the number of strides on test-retest reliability and measurement error of markerless gait biomechanics in older adults. METHODS: Twenty strides were extracted from 29 healthy older adults for each of two sessions. Lower-limb kinematics and kinetics were computed. Subsequently, non-co…

Clinical gait analysis in older children with autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit motor deficits that increase their risk of falls. There is a lack of understanding regarding gait biomechanics demonstrated by older children with ASD. The purpose of the study was to determine differences in gait patterns between older children with ASD and typically developing children. Eleven children with ASD and 11 age- and gender-matched typically developing children were recruited for the study. Participants walked on a force-instrumented treadmill at a constant speed (1.1 m/s - 1.2 m/s) for five minutes (min). Participan

Instrumented gait analysis defines the walking signature of CACNA1A disorders.

BACKGROUND: Gait disturbances are a frequent symptom in CACNA1A disorders. Even though, data about their severity and progression are lacking and no CACNA1A-specific scale or assessment for gait is available. METHODS: We applied a gait assessment protocol in 20 ambulatory patients with genetically confirmed CACNA1A disorders and 39 matched healthy controls. An instrumented gait analysis (IGA) was performed by means of wearable sensors in basal condition and after a treadmill/cycloergometer challenge in selected cases. RESULTS: CACNA1A patients displayed lower gait speed, shorter steps with i…
