Dairy cows may suffer events of hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia, commonly known as milk fever and tetany. Milk fever is characterized by hypocalcemia at parturition as a consequence of a sudden increase in Ca demand and an unavoidable delay in Ca metabolism adaptation. Tetany is due to impaired Mg absorption from the rumen that cannot be compensated by absorptive or excretory adaptation, resulting in a net nutritional shortage of Mg and culminating in hypomagnesemia. Prevention strategies require triggering the activation of Ca gastrointestinal absorption and avoiding factors limiting ruminal …

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To determine whether iron was being enterally absorbed in anemic patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB).
METHODS: Anemic patients with RDEB who were refractory or had poor adherence to oral or gastrostomy-given iron underwent enteral iron absorption challenges. Subjects were given 2 mg/kg of elemental iron. Successful iron absorption was defined as a two- to threefold increase of serum iron or a rise to above 100 µg/dL.
RESULTS: Nine of 12 iron challenges did not show increased iron absorption. Only three of the ten subjects demonstrated elevat

The biologic clock that determines the temporal sequence of maturation of digestive and absorptive processes in the gastrointestinal tract is genetically predetermined, but may be modified by dietary, hormonal, or other factors. In general it may be said that the gastrointestinal tract of full-term neonates is capable of digesting and absorbing a nutritionally adequate quantity of dietary protein but capacity is limited. Very low birth weight preterm infants, who are surviving the early neonatal period in increasing numbers, have immaturity of a wide range of digestive and membrane-associated

Pharmacologic agents of diverse types may alter gastrointestinal absorption of nutrients and other substances. Mechanisms underlying drug-induced absorptive defects that have been documented include: (1) a direct toxic effect causing morphologic changes in the mucosa of the small intestine; (2) inhibition of mucosal enzymes with or without morphologic evidence of mucosal damage; (3) binding and precipitation of micellar components, such as bile acids and fatty acids; and (4) alteration of the physicochemical state of another drug or dietary ion. The malabsorptive effect generally is dose-relat…

Investigations were carried out to evaluate the effect of Ipomoea aquatica aqueous and dichloromethane/methanol extracts on the glucose absorption using a rat intestinal preparation in situ. Extracts orally tested at the dose of 160 mg/kg exerted a significant inhibitory effect on glucose absorption when compared with control animals. The most pronounced effect was observed with the aqueous extract. Ouabain used as reference inhibitor strongly inhibited glucose absorption. On the other hand both plant extracts inhibited the gastrointestinal motility suggesting that the inhibition of glucose ab

The use of various lipids for the modification of intestinal absorption of lipophilic, hydrophilic, or macromolecular drugs is reviewed. The influence of lipids on drug absorption varies with the structure and physical state of incorporated lipids. The mechanisms of drug absorption across the intestine, that involve lipids in the state of emulsions, liposomes, and micelles, are discussed. The use of fusogenic lipids in the micellar state can be most effective in enabling the absorption of poorly absorbed drugs, such as antibiotics and macromolecules. Moreover, within the gastrointestinal tract

A loss of prosecretory Cl- channel CFTR activity in the intestine is considered as the key cause of gastrointestinal problems in cystic fibrosis (CF): meconium ileus, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS) and constipation. Since CFTR modulators have minimal effects on gastrointestinal symptoms, there is an unmet need for novel treatments for CF-associated gastrointestinal disorders. Meconium ileus and DIOS mainly affect the ileum (distal small intestine). SLC26A6 (putative anion transporter 1, PAT1) is a Cl-/HCO3- exchanger at the luminal membrane of small intestinal epithelial cells w

Dietary spices and their active constituents provide various beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal system by variety of mechanisms such as influence of gastric emptying, stimulation of gastrointestinal defense and absorption, stimulation of salivary, intestinal, hepatic, and pancreatic secretions. Capsicum annuum (Solanaceae), commonly known as chilli, is a medicinal spice used in various Indian traditional systems of medicine and it has been acknowledged to treat various health ailments. Therapeutic potential of chilli and capsaicin were well documented; however, they act as double-edged

OBJECTIVE: Activation of vagal afferent neurons (VAN) by postprandial gastrointestinal signals terminates feeding and facilitates nutrient digestion and absorption. Leptin modulates responsiveness of VAN to meal-related gastrointestinal signals. Rodents with high-fat diet (HF) feeding develop leptin resistance that impairs responsiveness of VAN. We hypothesized that lack of leptin signaling in VAN reduces responses to meal-related signals, which in turn decreases absorption of nutrients and energy storage from high-fat, calorically dense food.

INTRODUCTION: Fever is a common clinical manifestation often attributed to infection, which frequently leads to empirical antibiotic therapy. However, non-infectious causes of fever are easily overlooked. Among patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, a rare but under-recognised phenomenon known as absorption fever has been described. Increasing awareness of this condition is important to prevent unnecessary exposure to antibiotics.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 61-year-old man presented with nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain and melaena. On admission, his temperature was 38°C. Laboratory tests reveale

Analgesic drugs, as well as providing pain relief, can cause a range of other symptoms and side effects, most notably on the gastrointestinal system. Conversely, gastrointestinal disease will often require analgesia, and this can be complicated by the fact that the gut is the site of absorption of oral drugs. This paper discusses some of the effects of common oral analgesic drugs on the gastrointestinal tract and their role in managing some of the most common, nonmalignant, chronic gastrointestinal disorders in adults.

Toxicity of cyanogenetic glucoside was studied with rats using synthesized D, L-mandelonitrile-beta-D-glucoside. Considering from blood cyanide level, the cause of death was presumed to be cyanide intoxication. Hydrolysis of cyanogenetic glucoside occurred mainly in small and large intestines. Cyanide level in the intestine seemed to be independent of the amount of glucoside present. LD50 value was calculated to 560 mg/kg but good dose dependent result was not obtained. Relatively rapid absorption of the glucoside from the gastrointestinal tract was observed with the highest absorption rate of

Except for impaired resorption of vitamin D and calcium, the small bowel does not exhibit significant functional impairment during aging. Vascular problems in the small and large bowel are rare, but are of dramatic importance. Chronic constipation and diverticulosis are classical disorders of aging which should be treated by adding fiber to the normal diet. Surgery is only indicated in the case of complicated diverticulitis. Adenoma and colorectal carcinoma show an age-related incidence. Angiodysplasia, preferentially localized in the caecum, is the major cause of lower gastrointestinal tract

British breeds of cattle are not so effective as Zebu in extracting nutrients from low-quality roughages, and these breeds differ in their nutrient metabolism and animal physiology. Breeds of cattle may differ in their requirements for Mg. Brahman cows are less susceptible to death from disease and metabolic disorders than are British breeds of cattle, whereas cows with 50% or greater dairy breeding (Holstein and Jersey) are more susceptible than British or Brahman breeds when maintained in beef production herds. Brahman or Brahman crossbred cows are less susceptible than other breeds to metab

Organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are a group of membrane transport proteins that facilitate the influx of endogenous and exogenous substances across biological membranes. OATPs are found in enterocytes and hepatocytes and in brain, kidney, and other tissues. In enterocytes, OATPs facilitate the gastrointestinal absorption of certain orally administered drugs. Fruit juices such as grapefruit juice, orange juice, and apple juice contain substances that are OATP inhibitors. These fruit juices diminish the gastrointestinal absorption of certain antiallergen, antibiotic, antihyperten…
