INTRODUCTION: A range of quantitative studies has identified intimate partner violence (IPV) as a risk factor for perinatal mental health conditions, and adverse obstetric and child outcomes. Rich qualitative literature has explored women’s experiences of both perinatal mental health and IPV in the African region, in isolation. However, qualitative findings about relationships between the two are less widely reported. METHODS: We searched systematically for qualitative studies exploring women’s experiences of IPV and perinatal mental health conditions in the African region up to 16/09/2024. We

Gender-affirming medical treatment for transgender and gender-diverse individuals effectively aligns secondary sex characteristics with gender identity improving psychological well-being, quality of life, and social functioning. This article focuses on gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) synthesizing current evidence and guideline recommendations for feminizing and masculinizing GAHT, including dosing strategies, monitoring protocols, fertility counseling, and management of common side effects. Future priorities include optimizing low-dosing protocols for nonbinary patients. GAHT, when pro

Human papillomavirus (HPV) drives a substantial cancer burden across all genders. This perspective argues that gender-neutral HPV vaccination is an equitable and cost-effective public health investment when designed for scale. Rather than presenting methods in detail, we synthesize recent epidemiology, policy positions, and economic evaluations to propose a simplicity-first pathway-a pragmatic model that, where permitted, prioritizes single-dose schedules, school-based delivery for adolescents aged 9-14, small, computable set of key performance indicators (KPIs) set (coverage, timeliness, seri

OBJECTIVES: Public health diplomacy increasingly unfolds under polycrisis conditions shaped by pandemics, conflict, demographic change, climate-related shocks, governance turbulence, and the infodemic. This narrative review examines conference equity, participation, and visibility as governance-relevant mechanisms within public health diplomacy.
METHODS: We conducted a narrative synthesis of recent literature on global health governance, public health diplomacy, conference participation, diversity and inclusion, digital and hybrid convening, and equity-oriented capacity building.
RESULTS: Th

OBJECTIVE: To assess HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use for HIV prevention among college students in the United States.
PARTICIPANTS: Full- and part-time students (aged 18+ years) attending 4-year institutions (n = 133831).
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of combined ACHA-NCHA-III survey data from Spring 2022 and Spring 2023. PrEP-to-need ratios (PnR) and PrEP equity ratios (PER) were calculated to identify disparities in PrEP use.
RESULTS: Two percent (n = 2662) of students reported taking PrEP. Overall, the PrEP-to-need ratio (PnR) was 13.9, indicating that approximately 1

Heart failure (HF) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, affecting women and men in nearly equal numbers, yet important sex- and gender-related differences remain insufficiently recognized in clinical practice and research. Biological sex and gender influences profoundly the disease development, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management. For decades, most evidence and guideline recommendations have been based on predominantly male cohorts, limiting their applicability to women. This review aims to synthesize the current evidence on sex- and gender-related differen

Health systems globally continue to struggle to translate health equity commitments into consistent day-to-day practice at the point of care. Although equity strategies are often articulated at national or system levels, frontline health care services frequently lack the governance structures, partnerships, operational tools, and learning environments needed to prioritize populations experiencing inequities amid competing clinical and organizational demands. This challenge is particularly visible in high-volume, resource-constrained settings. Early findings suggest that equity work becomes mor

Immediate antiretroviral therapy (iART), defined as same-day initiation of ART or as soon as possible after diagnosis, has recently been recommended by global and national clinical care guidelines for patients newly diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Based on San Francisco's Rapid ART Program Initiative for HIV Diagnoses (RAPID) model, most iART programs in the US condense ART initiation, insurance acquisition, housing assessment, and mental health and substance use evaluation into an initial visit. However, the RAPID model does not explicitly address structural racism and homo

This review examines menstrual health as a neglected dimension of women's health and occupational equity, with particular attention to high-stress and gendered occupational contexts. It asks how menstruation is addressed or silenced within workplace health frameworks, and how these dynamics are intensified in safety-critical, shift-based, and regulated occupations. A narrative review was conducted to synthesize literature from occupational health, feminist organizational scholarship, health policy, aviation studies, and workplace inclusion research. Aviation is used as a focal case, bringing t

Infertility affects one in six couples worldwide, yet men’s reproductive health remains marginalized in nursing scholarship. This exclusion is not simply a gap in evidence; it reflects deeper inequities rooted in gendered histories of reproduction, where women’s bodies have been medicalized and men’s virility preserved as cultural capital. Such dynamics have produced epistemological silences that perpetuate inequitable care. Drawing on theories of traditional masculinity, stigma, and nursing epistemology, this commentary positions male infertility as a critical equity case that exposes how dis

Organ transplantation as an option to overcome end-stage diseases is common in countries with advanced healthcare systems and is increasingly provided in emerging and developing countries. A review of the literature points to sex- and gender-based inequity in the field with differences reported at each step of the transplant process, including access to a transplantation waiting list, access to transplantation once waitlisted, as well as outcome after transplantation. In this review, we summarize the data regarding sex- and gender-based disparity in adult and pediatric kidney, liver, lung, hea

This article explores the mental health concerns of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals within a mutual aid and harm reduction framework. Despite historical strides toward equity and care in the public health sector, TGD people face structural discrimination, polyvictimization, and worsening political hostility that heighten mental health disparities. The authors critique medical and nursing practices shaped by carceral logic and call for new approaches rooted in equity and care. Clinical recommendations emphasize affirming, trauma-informed, and community-based care, while highlig

Across sub-Saharan Africa where access to adequate maternal healthcare is fraught with myriad challenges, especially for hard-to-reach populations, digital health technologies offer opportunities to improve maternal health outcomes. Digital health can circumvent inefficiencies in the traditional healthcare system and address challenges such as limited access to in-person medical consultations, and poor access to skilled birth attendants and health promotion activities. These benefits notwithstanding, digital health can be exclusionary. Too often, digital maternal health programs are not design

BACKGROUND: As the field of gender-affirming care continues its advancement, a clinical gap in the definition and evaluation of sexual function in transgender and non-binary (TGNB) individuals is becoming increasingly apparent. Recent speculations propose the modification of cis-gender heteronormative sexual function measurement tools as a useful way to close this knowledge gap.
METHODS: Although the use of previously validated tools creates an easier platform for modification, the assumption of cis-gender sexual function as baseline will further disrupt patient-provider relationships, leadin

INTRODUCTION: As more women enter surgical fields, ensuring gender equity is increasingly critical to career longevity and workforce retention. Although peripartum complications and pregnancy-related discrimination among surgical trainees and faculty has been well described, limited data exist comparing parenting experiences of male and female surgeons. We aimed to characterize gender-based differences in work-related parenting concerns within a single department of surgery.
METHODS: An institutional review board-approved, anonymous survey of residents, fellows, and faculty within the departm

Examining the causal nexus between health services and gender equality is of paramount significance in policy formulation and academic inquiry. This paper concentrates on maternal, sexual, and reproductive health, offering a critical narrative review of empirical research exploring the causal relationship between enhanced women's health, stemming from either overall healthcare amelioration or specific interventions, and broader gender equality objectives. A conceptual framework is devised to elucidate the causal pathways between health and gender equality across various dimensions. The final r

Since 2022, mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) has emerged as a sexually-associated infection that disproportionately impacts gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Fortunately, the JYNNEOS vaccine, which was initially developed for smallpox, has demonstrated significant efficacy against mpox and was distributed across the United States. In January 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that Rhode Island ranked first among the 50 states for rates of full vaccination coverage (two doses) against mpox among people at increased risk including GBMS

INTRODUCTION: Individuals and communities affected by NTDs are often the poorest and most marginalised; ensuring a gender and equity lens is centre stage will be critical for the NTD community to reach elimination goals and inform Universal Health Coverage (UHC). NTDs amenable to preventive chemotherapy have been described as a 'litmus test' for UHC due to the high mass drug administration (MDA) coverage rates needed to be effective and their model of community engagement. However, until now highly aggregated coverage data may have masked inequities in availability, accessibility and acceptabi

BACKGROUND: Research and theory in the field of implementation science (IS) are increasingly prioritizing health equity. Although this shift is an important development for the field, IS has not yet systematically engaged with theories and methods of critical social science that help to clarify the challenges and opportunities of efforts to improve health equity. In our paper, we present a summary of recent contributions to dialogue on health equity in the field of IS and highlight the value of critical social science theory to advance research and action for social justice and equity in imple
