The purpose of the present investigation was to study stereologically the histopathologic changes in the gingiva during 6 months of abolished oral hygiene and to study the development of chronic gingivitis in man. The expression of the histocompatibility antigens HLA-DR and HLA-A, B, C within periodontally diseased tissue was investigated using immunohistological and histochemical techniques. A recently reported six-month gingivitis study demonstrated that in subjects with gingivitis, a triclosan/pyrophosphate dentifrice provided supragingival plaque control. The level of plaque reduction was comparable with that reported for other triclosan-containing dentifrices; however, no reductions in gingivitis were observed for triclosan/pyrophosphate relative to the negative control.
