Ground-glass hepatocellular inclusions are associated with polypharmacy.

Ground-glass (GG) hepatocytes are classically associated with chronic hepatitis B (HBV) infection, storage disorders, or cyanamide therapy. In a subset of cases, an exact etiology cannot be identified. In this study, we sought to characterize the clinical, histological, and ultrastructural findings associated with HBV-negative GG hepatocytes. Our institutional laboratory information system was searched from 2000 to 2019 for all cases of ground-glass hepatocytes. Ten liver biopsies with GG hepatocellular inclusions and negative HBV serology, no known history of storage disorders, or cyanamide t…

Modification of Glass/Polyester Laminates with Flame Retardants.

This paper presents a review of flame retardants used for glass/polyester laminates. It concerns flame retardants withdrawn from use such as compounds containing halogen atoms and flame retardants currently used in the industry, such as inorganic hydroxides, phosphorus and nitrogen-containing compounds, antimony, and boron compounds, as well as tin-zinc compounds. Attention is also drawn to the use of nanoclays and the production of nanocomposites, intumescent flame retardant systems, and mats, as well as polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes. The paper discusses the action mechanism of partic…

Pathogens Manipulating Tick Behavior-Through a Glass, Darkly.

Pathogens can manipulate the phenotypic traits of their hosts and vectors, maximizing their own fitness. Among the phenotypic traits that can be modified, manipulating vector behavior represents one of the most fascinating facets. How pathogens infection affects behavioral traits of key insect vectors has been extensively investigated. Major examples include Plasmodium, Leishmania and Trypanosoma spp. manipulating the behavior of mosquitoes, sand flies and kissing bugs, respectively. However, research on how pathogens can modify tick behavior is patchy. This review focuses on current knowledge

Allergic contact dermatitis from resin-modified glass ionomers.

Monomers in a variety of dental materials may cause allergic contact dermatitis. While resin materials have been implicated in the onset of this condition, there is a paucity of evidence linking the condition to the resin-modified glass ionomers (RMGIs). This report documents a rare case of a dentist who developed allergic contact dermatitis following exposure to a RMGI. Contact dermatitis occurred despite the use of latex gloves, which were worn during the procedure. Both the acute and chronic stages of the condition were clinically represented. Patch testing was conducted to confirm the diag…

Enamel Remineralization with Novel Bioactive Glass Air Abrasion.

Enamel demineralization or white spot lesions (WSLs) are a frequent complication associated with fixed appliance-based orthodontic treatment. The remineralization potential of a novel fluoride-containing bioactive glass (QMAT3) propelled via an air abrasion system was compared with Sylc glass and artificial saliva on artificially induced WSLs. Thirty extracted human premolars were randomly assigned into 3 groups ( n = 10) per method of treatment and scanned with optical coherence tomography and noncontact profilometer in the 4 enamel states: sound, demineralized, after glass propulsion, and af…

Porous calcium phosphate glass microspheres for orthobiologic applications.

UNLABELLED: Orthobiologics is a rapidly advancing field utilising cell-based therapies and biomaterials to enable the body to repair and regenerate musculoskeletal tissues. This paper reports on a cost-effective flame spheroidisation process for production of novel porous glass microspheres from calcium phosphate-based glasses to encapsulate and deliver stem cells. Careful selection of the glass and pore-forming agent, along with a manufacturing method with the required processing window enabled the production of porous glass microspheres via a single-stage manufacturing process. The morpholog…

Facile deposition of YSZ-inverse photonic glass films.

An alternative all-colloidal and single-step deposition method of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-infiltrated polymeric photonic glass films is presented. Heterocoagulation of oppositely charged polystyrene (PS) microspheres and YSZ nanocrystals in aqueous dispersions created PS/YSZ core-shell spheres. These composite particles were deposited on glass substrates by a simple drop-coating process. Heterocoagulation impaired self-assembly of the particles, resulting in a disordered structure. Burn-out of the polymer yielded a random array of YSZ shells. The effect of the filling fraction of YSZ…

Risk assessment of boron in glass wool insulation.

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: Glass wools are man-made vitreous fibres, which consist principally of sodium, calcium and magnesium silicates, but may contain smaller amounts of other elements, including boron. The boron contents originate from the use of borates in the glass melting process as a glass former and a flux agent. During the production and application of glass wool insulation products, workers may legally be exposed to glass fibre up to the occupational limit value, commonly of 1 fibre/cm3. However, in practice, the fibre exposure will be at least ten times lower. Boron is a non-metal…

Glass embedded in labial mucosa for 20 years.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Foreign bodies may be deposited in the oral cavity either by traumatic injury or iatrogenically. Among the commonly encountered iatrogenic foreign bodies are restorative materials like amalgam, obturation materials, broken instruments, needles, etc. Few reports of glass pieces embedded in the soft tissues of the mouth have been published. We report a case where glass pieces had been lodged in the lower labial mucosa for 20 years, with consequent peripheral reactive bone formation.

Bioactive glass hydroxyapatite in fronto-orbital defect reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic bioactive ceramics and glasses have osteoconductive properties. These materials are capable of chemically bonding to the bone tissue. In addition, special bioactive glasses do not favor microbial growth. In this study, the clinical outcome of bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite in head and neck surgery was evaluated. METHODS: In a retrospective series of 150 patients, 62 patients underwent reconstruction with frontal sinus obliteration after chronic frontal sinusitis, 65 patients were operated on for fronto-orbital traumas, and 23 patients underwent reconstruction after f…

Multi-layer microfluidic glass chips for microanalytical applications.

A new, versatile architecture is presented for microfluidic devices made entirely from glass, for use with reagents which would prove highly corrosive for silicon. Chips consist of three layers of glass wafers bonded together by fusion bonding. On the inside wafer faces a network of microfluidic channels is created by photolithography and wet chemical etching. Low dead-volume fluidic connections between the layers are fabricated by spark-assisted etching (SAE), a computer numerical controlled (CNC)-like machining technique new to microfluidic system fabrication. This method is also used to for…

Reconstruction of orbital floor fractures using bioactive glass.

INTRODUCTION: The management of orbital floor fractures continues to be debated. Bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics are in the new group of materials developed for the repair of bone defects which are beyond any innate healing capacity due to their size. OBJECTIVE: We compared the use of alloplastic implants (bioactive glass) with conventional autogenous grafts (cartilage--plus or minus Iyophilized dura) for the repair of orbital floor defects after trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients having orbital floor fractures with persistent diplopia, enophthalmos, and/or infraorbital…

Biocompatibility tests on a novel glass-ceramic system.

The aim of this study was to look at the bone bonding potential of six formulations of a novel glass-ceramic system. Cylinders of the ceramics were implanted in rabbit tibiae for 4 and 7 weeks. Histological tests, both quantitative and qualitative, as well as push-out tests, were carried out during the bonding assessment. Bone growth was quite prolific, even at 4 weeks, as evidenced by growth up to and along the implant surfaces. The interfacial shear strengths compared well with other biomaterials in use as endosseous implants. Therefore it seems pertinent to pursue further long-term experime…

Bioactive glass ceramic: a new material in tympanoplasty.

The practicability of the bioactive glass ceramic Ceravital in ear surgery was tested in animals. The histological findings are presented. Over the last 3 years implants of bioactive glass ceramic were used in humans. Prostheses for the total or partial reconstruction of the ossicular chain and the reconstruction of the bony wall of the outer ear canal were fashioned. We have conducted about 300 tympanoplasties and 60 total or partial reconstructions of the bony wall of the outer ear canal. The otoscopic and functional results were satisfactory.
