Phacotrabeculectomy without mitomycin C in primary angle-closure and open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To compare the surgical outcomes of single site phacotrabeculectomy without mitomycin C (MMC) in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients with a diagnosis of PACG and POAG, who underwent single site phacotrabeculectomy without MMC between January 2001 and December 2005 and had a minimum follow-up of 12 months. The primary outcome measure was cumulative success probability, defined as complete [intraocular pressure (IOP) ≤21 mm Hg without antiglaucoma medications or additional surgery

[Observation of the chamber angle in primary angle-closure glaucoma with an ultrasound biomicroscope].

We observed the chamber angle in 47 eyes of 29 patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma using ultrasound biomicroscopy in dark and illuminated conditions. All observations were made before surgical intervention and without any drugs affecting pupillary reaction. Ultrasound biomicroscopy was repeated following laser iridotomy in 23 of the eyes. Out of 115 angle locations examined where no synechiae had been found by pressure gonioscopy, appositional angle closure was seen at 65 locations (57%) in 33 eyes (70%) in dark conditions. At 30 angle locations in 18 eyes, the appositional closure be

Association of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) Variants with Primary Angle Closure and Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma.

Shorter axial length observed in patients with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) might be due to altered matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) activity resulting in ECM remodeling during eye growth and development. This study aimed to evaluate common variants in MMP9 for association with PACG. Six tag SNPs of MMP9 were genotyped in a Chinese sample of 1,030 cases, including 572 PACG and 458 primary angle closure (PAC), and 499 controls. None of 6 SNPs were significantly associated with overall PAC/PACG (P > 0.07) or with PAC/PACG subgroups (Pc > 0.18). Meta-analysis of two non-Chinese studies

Profiling lipidomic variations in primary open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma patients.

Retinal ganglion cell death in glaucoma leads to progressive and irreversible vision loss. Investigating lipidomic profiles of aqueous humor and plasma from primary glaucoma patients may reveal novel lipid signaling pathways and biomarkers. Plasma lipidomics was included to assess systemic alterations, enabling comparison with ocular changes and explore accessible, minimally invasive biomarker sources. This study included patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), and cataract controls (n = 20 in each group). Serum lipid screening was conducted via biochem

[Primary anterior chamber angle closure: progression from suspect to glaucoma. Part 2. Predictors of primary angle closure].

To review the literature devoted to the search of predictors of primary angle closure (PAC) progression as an important link in the pathogenesis of primary angle-closure glaucoma. This part presents a cluster analysis, describes the mechanisms of PAC development, and considers the studies aimed at discovering the risk factors for the progression of primary angle closure suspect into true angle closure. The results of the analyzed literature are ambiguous, indicating the need for further research that would involve strict inclusion criteria, and a standard approach to defining the primary angle

TOPIRAMATE-INDUCED BILATERAL ANGLE-CLOSURE GLAUCOMA. A CASE REPORT.

INTRODUCTION: Topamax (topiramate) is a drug used in the treatment of epilepsy or migraine. Its use may rarely be associated with the occurrence of secondary angle-closure glaucoma due to supraciliary effusion. Although the ocular finding resembles primary angle-closure glaucoma, bilateral infliction should always raise the suspicion that it is drug-induced glaucoma. CASE REPORT: The authors present a case of a 51-year-old patient on Topamax therapy with sudden vertigo, headache and blurred vision. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral angle-closure glaucoma, which was initially treated i
