The phenological seasons of Poland in the warming world.

The aim of the study is to examine the impact of climate change on plant phenology and the shift of phenological seasons. This paper considers phenophases of wild-growing plants in Poland at 36 observation stations over the past nearly 80 years. The analysis was conducted for two 15-year periods: a reference period (1946-1960) and a recent period (2007-2021), during which rapid global warming has been observed. This study applies the phenological calendar method. The results indicate shifts in the onset of successive phenological seasons in the recent period compared to the reference period, a…

Environmental and clinical rationale for the use of desflurane: a review of the literature.

Desflurane is a fluorinated ether anesthetic with several clinical benefits, including resistance to defluorination (reducing nephrotoxicity), rapid emergence, cardioprotective properties, and faster recovery of airway reflexes than other volatile agents. However, its use is increasingly restricted because of environmental concerns, and the European Union has finalized regulations to phase out its use from January 2026, citing its global warming potential. Although its 100-year global warming potential exceeds that of comparable agents, the most appropriate emission metric remains debated. Rad…

Strong Delayed Interactive Effects of Metal Exposure and Warming: Latitude-Dependent Synergisms Persist Across Metamorphosis.

As contaminants are often more toxic at higher temperatures, predicting their impact under global warming remains a key challenge for ecological risk assessment. Ignoring delayed effects, synergistic interactions between contaminants and warming, and differences in sensitivity across species' ranges could lead to an important underestimation of the risks. We addressed all three mechanisms by studying effects of larval exposure to zinc and warming before, during, and after metamorphosis in Ischnura elegans damselflies from high- and low-latitude populations. By integrating these mechanisms into…

Impact of anthropogenic and natural environmental changes on Echinococcus transmission in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the People's Republic of China.

Echinococcus transmission is known to be affected by various environmental factors, which may be modified by human influence or natural events including global warming. Considerable population growth in the last fifty years in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR), the People's Republic of China (PRC), has led to dramatic increases in deforestation and modified agricultural practices. In turn, this has resulted in many changes in the habitats for the definitive and intermediate hosts of both Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis, which have increased the risks for transmission of both p…

Policy Inaction Risks Breaching the 2°C Climate Target.

Despite repeated increases in national climate pledges since the Paris Agreement, a significant gap remains between collective ambition and the action required to meet its temperature goals. Integrating these pledges with global models, we show that full implementation would still lead to approximately 1.7°C of warming, missing the 1.5°C target. When considering ongoing policy inaction, a cumulative shortfall of 505 GtCO2e in anticipated mitigation is expected, and this warming increases by nearly 0.3°C, drastically narrowing the window to stay below 2.0°C. Our analysis reveals a critical disp

Integrating green finance and energy transitions for decarbonization: Policy pathways to achieve COP-29 goals in E7 economies.

Addressing the urgent challenges of rising CO2 emissions and global warming has become a critical priority, particularly in emerging economies. Commitments made during COP-29 emphasized the need to triple climate finance and scale up investments in green energy to meet global decarbonization goals by 2050. The objective of this study is twofold: first, to investigate the impact of green energy and finance on reducing CO2 emissions. Second, this study investigated whether green finance facilitates the adoption of green energy and enhances its impact on CO2 reduction. This study analyzed data fr…

Boosting microalgae-based carbon sequestration with the artificial CO2 concentration system.

Global warming caused by CO2 emissions has been considered as one of the major challenges of this century. In an endeavor to control and reduce CO2 emissions, a series of Carbon dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies have been developed specifically for the sequestration of CO2 from atmospheric air. Microalgae, as versatile and universal photosynthetic microorganisms, represent a promising avenue for biological CO2 sequestration. Nevertheless, further advancements are necessary to optimize microalgae-based carbon sequestration technology in terms of light reaction and da…

Reconciling early Deccan Traps CO2 outgassing and pre-KPB global climate.

A 2 to 4 °C warming episode, known as the Latest Maastrichtian warming event (LMWE), preceded the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (KPB) mass extinction at 66.05 ± 0.08 Ma and has been linked with the onset of voluminous Deccan Traps volcanism. Here, we use direct measurements of melt-inclusion CO2 concentrations and trace-element proxies for CO2 to test the hypothesis that early Deccan magmatism triggered this warming interval. We report CO2 concentrations from NanoSIMS and Raman spectroscopic analyses of melt-inclusion glass and vapor bubbles hosted in magnesian olivines from pre-KPB Deccan pri

Climate-carbon feedback tradeoff between Arctic and alpine permafrost under warming.

Whether greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from permafrost will trigger positive climate feedbacks under warming remains unknown. Here, we synthesized the response of growing season carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions to experimentally manipulated warming of ~2°C for permafrost in alpine and Arctic regions. Warming weakened the GHG sink of alpine permafrost, thereby increasing (13%) its global warming potential, but strengthened the GHG sink of Arctic permafrost and decreased (-10%) its global warming potential. When warming caused drying of alpine permafrost soi…

Unprecedented Warming and Increased Herbivory Drive Collapse of Japan's Kelp Forests.

Kelp forests underpin entire ecosystems and provide key services for human society, yet are threatened by anthropogenic stressors, most notably ocean warming and overgrazing. While Japanese kelp forests have substantial historical and cultural value, responses to recent environmental change remain poorly resolved. Here, we assessed how recent Kuroshio-associated warming and increased herbivory were linked to kelp forest collapse across approximately 200 km of the Izu Peninsula (central-eastern Japan). We combined 40 years of in situ kelp biomass (1980-2024) and 12-14 years of canopy-cover reco

Measurement of microclimates in a warming world: problems and solutions.

As the world warms, it will be tempting to relate the biological responses of terrestrial animals to air temperature. But air temperature typically plays a lesser role in the heat exchange of those animals than does radiant heat. Under radiant load, animals can gain heat even when body surface temperature exceeds air temperature. However, animals can buffer the impacts of radiant heat exposure: burrows and other refuges may block solar radiant heat fully, but trees and agricultural shelters provide only partial relief. For animals that can do so effectively, evaporative cooling will be used to
