Dental practitioners are usually the first health professionals to examine and diagnose patients with oral pyogenic granuloma. Usually of traumatic origin, the lesion results from an overly aggressive immune response. Despite several accepted methods of treatment, recurrence is common. This paper reports on a case of recurrent pyogenic granuloma and reviews the relevant literature.

In this report, we describe three adult patients diagnosed with lacrimal sac pyogenic granuloma. The presenting symptoms were acute dacryocystitis, lacrimal mass, and bloody tears. The nasolacrimal drainage pathway was obstructed in all cases. Radiologic evaluation performed in one patient revealed the presence of a well-defined mass in the sac with homogenous contrast uptake. A consecutive series of 43 pyogenic granulomata in the oral cavity is presented. Most were located to the marginal vestibular gingivae and only a minority (12%) of these had a history of trauma whereas 70% in extragingival locations had a previous history of injury. On the basis of an evaluation of oral conditions the aetiology and the pathogenesis of the pyogenic granuloma are discussed. Trauma, microtrauma due to toothbrushing and gingival inflammation seem to be pathogenetic elements. It is suggested that the granuloma is a localised tissue response to a non-specific irritant.

An atypical fibroxanthoma on the ear of a 82-year-old man appeared clinically as a pyogenic granuloma. Histopathologically, the lesion had been interpreted as a malignant melanoma before its true nature was identified. BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granuloma is a benign, acquired, proliferative vascular lesion of the skin and mucous membranes. Many different treatments have been used for pyogenic granuloma with variable success rates.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of cryotherapy in the treatment of pyogenic granuloma.
METHODS: In a prospective observational study, 135 patients with pyogenic granuloma were treated with cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen. The patients were followed up every 3 weeks until 3 months after disappearance of the lesion.
