Perception of quality of an international recreational gymnastics event: the case of the GIMNASTRADA 2019.

INTRODUCTION: The GIMNASTRADA is an annual, non-competitive gymnastics event, held in the city of Cáceres (Extremadura, Spain) since 1996. The 2019 edition was the largest in number of participants with around 3,700 gymnasts and 12,000 spectators. The aim of this study was to determine whether the perception of quality of GIMNASTRADA 2019 was influenced by the type of participation that different groups of attenders developed in this gymnastic event (gymnasts, gymnastics group leaders, family members, audience, organisational staff). METHODS: To this end, a total of 331 participants completed…

Evaluation of a smartphone-based markerless motion capture system for assessing the kinematics of gymnastics.

Monitoring gymnasts in their training environments, using markerless motion capture, could enhance our understanding of their injuries and facilitate the implementation and evaluation of injury prevention measures. This study compared a smartphone-based markerless motion capture system (OpenCap) to a gold standard marker-based system (Vicon) to see how well it could track basic gymnastics. Ten participants were recorded simultaneously using both systems whilst performing: walk, squat, sit-to-stand, drop jump, handstand, cartwheel, handstand walk, handstand hop. Comparisons were made between gy…

Molecular Gymnastics: Mechanisms of HIV-1 Resistance to CCR5 Antagonists and Impact on Virus Phenotypes.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) enters host cells through the binding of its envelope glycoproteins (Env) to the host cell receptor CD4 and then subsequent binding to a chemokine coreceptor, either CCR5 or CXCR4. CCR5 antagonists are a relatively recent class addition to the armamentarium of anti-HIV-1 drugs. These compounds act by binding to a hydrophobic pocket formed by the transmembrane helices of CCR5 and altering the conformation of the extracellular domains, such that they are no longer recognized by Env. Maraviroc is the first drug within this class to be licenced for use i

[Fracture of the diaphyseal radius during Cyr wheel practice - an uncommon injury of wheel gymnastics].

The cyr wheel is a modified gymnastic wheel with only one ring that can lead to extreme forces on the gymnast. We report on a distal radius shaft fracture (AO 22 A 2.1) and a fracture of the styloid process of the ulna that occurred after holding on to a slipping Cyr wheel and exposition to high pressure on the lower arm. The fracture was fixed by screws and a plate.

MRI Diagnosis of Gymnast's Wrist (Distal Radial Physeal Stress Injury).

Gymnast's wrist is an uncommon stress‑related injury of the distal radial physis caused by repetitive axial loading in skeletally immature athletes. We report the case of a 16‑year‑old elite gymnast presenting with progressive wrist pain without acute trauma. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated focal widening of the volar distal radial physis with adjacent metaphyseal and epiphyseal bone marrow edema, consistent with a stress‑related physeal injury. Conservative management with activity modification and physical therapy resulted in symptom resolution. Teaching point: In young athletes with

Rib pseudoarthrosis with thoracic outlet syndrome in pediatric gymnast: a case report.

BACKGROUND: This case study evaluates the diagnosis and treatment of a 12 year old Caucasian male gymnast who had several diagnoses including an isolated first rib fracture, resultant pseudoarthrosis of the first rib, and the development of symptomatic thoracic outlet syndrome. We discuss the causes, prevalence, and suggestions for prompt diagnosis and treatment of these conditions in pediatric patients. Although all three conditions are rare in a child, this case highlights the importance of having a high clinical index of suspicion in recurrent pain in pre-pubertal athletes. CASE PRESENTATI

[Spinal lesions following modified exercises in adolescent high performance gymnasts].

20 high performance gymnasts between 14 and 22 years of age had an anamnestical, clinical and radiological checkup on the spine in order to assess news training-methods. Radiologically only 3 gymnasts were found to be without any pathological manifestation. 7 cases of M. Scheuermann were located. The other athletes showed degenerative findings of vertebral columns especially in the thoracic-lumbar transition. These degenerative signs, and the fact tht the gymnasts had no spondylosis, are the result of new exercises, which avoid extreme bending load in the lowest segment of the lumbar region. A

Efficacy of a Rhythmic Gymnastics-Specific Injury Prevention Program: An Assessor-Blinded Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Overuse injuries are common among competitive rhythmic gymnasts, with an estimated weekly prevalence of 37% and with the knees, lower back, and hip/groin as the most common injury locations. Reduced physical capacity (e.g., strength and flexibility) has been hypothesized to contribute to the high prevalence of overuse injuries. The primary objective of this trial was to assess if exercises targeting reduced physical capacity in the knees, lower back, and hip/groin reduce the prevalence of overuse injuries compared with usual training. Twenty-three rhythmic gymnastics clubs were cluster-randomi…
