Laparoscopic ureteral repair in gynaecological surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review laparoscopic surgery in the treatment options for ureteral lesions in gynaecological surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Laparoscopic treatment of ureteral injuries has been increasingly reported over the past years. Treatment has progressively shifted from ureteroneocystostomy performed by laparotomy to less invasive treatment options such as ureteral stenting or dilatation in case of stricture, stenting under laparoscopic guidance and laparoscopic stitching of lacerations, laparoscopic ureteral reanastomosis or laparoscopic ureteroneocystostomy for transections. Deep endo

Prosthetic surgery versus native tissue repair of cystocele: literature review.

Cystocele is the most common pelvic organ prolapse. It is defined as the descent of the bladder into the anterior vaginal wall. Aging is significantly associated with the prevalence and severity of pelvic organ prolapse. Treatment may be conservative or surgical according to symptoms, prolapse degree and not forgetting both patient and doctor preferences. Identify the most efficient surgical treatment to treat cystocele and its recurrences. Scientific literature was reviewed searching PubMed/MEDLINE database for articles published between 1996 and 2015 and using the terms pelvic organ prolapse

Ligation of an anatomic variant of renal vasculature during laparoscopic periaortic lymph node dissection: a cause of postoperative renal infarction.

OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive surgical techniques are becoming more sophisticated as complex procedures are being incorporated into gynecologic oncology in routine and investigative settings. CASE: We present a case of an aberrant supernumerary right renal artery ligation during periaortic laparoscopic lymph node dissection for endometrial cancer. This injury resulted in infarction of the lower pole of the right kidney, with no late sequela. CONCLUSIONS: The gynecologic oncologist should be aware of the possibility of aberrant renal vasculature, and special care should be taken to avoid acc

Preoperative Mechanical Bowel Preparation for Abdominal, Laparoscopic, and Vaginal Surgery: A Systematic Review.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) continues to be widely used in gynecologic surgery, with the aim of reducing postoperative complications and improving the viewing and handling conditions in the surgical field. It is reported that MBP is an unpleasant patient experience and may be associated with adverse effects such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. This review evaluates the use of preoperative MBP compared with no MBP in adult patients undergoing open abdominal, laparoscopic, or vaginal surgery. Although the focus is on the use of MBP for gynecologic procedures, da

Building the evidence base for postoperative and postpartum advice.

Recommendations for activity after obstetric and gynecologic procedures remain based on tradition and anecdote. After reviewing the current evidence base, guidelines, and practice for postdischarge instructions related to physical activity after the most common obstetric and gynecologic surgical procedures, we conclude that the available data do not support many of the recommendations currently provided. Restrictions on lifting and climbing stairs should likely be abandoned. Guidance on driving should focus on the concern regarding cognitive function and analgesics rather than concerns of woun…

Surgical management of breast disease in an obstetrics and gynecology group.

The surgical management of breast disease from 1978 through 1988 by the Women's Health Center of Logansport is reviewed. Three hundred twelve biopsy procedures resulted in the diagnosis of 59 cancers. Biopsy and mastectomy procedures were performed by the authors (obstetrician-gynecologists). There were no significant complications and all patients had an adequate surgical result. Preoperative needle localization techniques proved to be a safe and effective method to identify and remove nonpalpable mammographic abnormalities. Because women depend on their gynecologist for advice regarding repr
