Is the posterior cingulate cortex an on-off switch for tinnitus?: A comparison between hearing loss subjects with and without tinnitus.

As the human brain works in a Bayesian manner to minimize uncertainty toward external stimuli, the deafferented brain may generate tinnitus in an attempt to fill in missing auditory information, e.g. due to hearing loss. However, not everybody with hearing loss develops tinnitus. Understanding the differences between people with hearing loss who develop tinnitus versus those who do not offers a unique opportunity to unravel critical brain areas involved in the generation of a phantom sound. In this study, we compared resting-state quantitative electroencephalography between hearing loss patien

Aberrant anterior cingulate processing of anticipated threat as a mechanism for psychosis.

Stress and abnormal stress response are associated with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD), but the brain mechanisms linking stress to symptomatology remain unclear. In this study, we used a stress-based functional neuroimaging task, reverse-translated from preclinical studies, to test the hypothesis that abnormal corticolimbic processing of stressful threat anticipation is associated with psychosis and affective symptoms in SSD. Participants underwent an MRI-compatible ankle-shock task (AST) in which the threat of mild electrical shock was anticipated. We compared functional brain activati

Abnormal interhemispheric homotopic functional connectivity is correlated with gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder.

The severity of major depressive disorder (MDD) can be aggravated by gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, but the neuroimaging mechanism underlying GI symptoms still remains unclear. In this study, we recruited 52 medication-free and first-episode MDD patients (35 with GI symptoms and 17 without GI symptoms) and 28 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls to explore the inter-group differences in neuroimaging findings. All the participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan, and the functional connectivities that were reported to be abnormal in MDD w

Effects of Bergen 4-Day Treatment on Resting-State Graph Features in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Exposure and response prevention is an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but it is unclear how symptom reduction is related to changes in the brain. We aimed to determine the effects of a 4-day concentrated exposure and response prevention program (Bergen 4-day treatment) on the static and dynamic functional connectome in patients with OCD. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with OCD (25 unmedicated) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging the day before the Bergen 4-day treatment, and 28 (21 unmedicated) were rescanned after 1 week. Alterations of regional homogeneity in Parkinson's disease with "pure" apathy: A resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Apathy is a prevalent and debilitating neuropsychiatric syndrome in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, its neural mechanisms are still unclear. METHODS: Forty-six de novo, drug-naïve, non-demented PD patients without depressive or anxious symptoms, of whom 26 were apathetic (PD-A) and 20 were not (PD-NA) according to the Apathy Scale (AS), and 23 matched healthy control (HC) subjects were enrolled in this study. The regional homogeneity (ReHo) approach based on resting-state functional MRI on a 3-T MR system was used to investigate apathy related local brain activity. RESULTS: Co

Functional MRI and pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the current state of knowledge in functional MRI (fMRI) research related to pain with primary focus on clinical studies. RECENT FINDINGS: With fMRI, the subjective effects of pain (sensory, affect, emotion, and motor components) can be objectively imaged. Although the conventional fMRI technique has been the isolation of regions in the brain transmitting and modulating pain, functional connectivity measurement can identify functionally linked regions associated with pain processing. The primary and secondary somatosensory cortex (S1 and S2), anterior ci

The opercular syndrome--diagnostic trap in facial paralysis.

We describe a patient with a left facial paralysis and hemotympanum following left parieto-occipital skull trauma. The initial admission diagnosis of intratemporal facial nerve injury secondary to temporal bone fracture was incorrect. Normal facial movements during involuntary activity (yawning, laughing at a joke) and focal seizure activity on the paralyzed side of the face, seen subsequently, indicated the site of lesion as supranuclear. The diagnosis of opercular syndrome was made. This syndrome can result when the contralateral frontal lobe is injured. Supranuclear weakness of muscles supp

Novel inductively coupled ear-bars (ICEs) to enhance restored fMRI signal from susceptibility compensation in rats.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging faces inherent challenges when applied to deep-brain areas in rodents, e.g. entorhinal cortex, due to the signal loss near the ear cavities induced by susceptibility artifacts and reduced sensitivity induced by the long distance from the surface array coil. Given the pivotal roles of deep brain regions in various diseases, optimized imaging techniques are needed. To mitigate susceptibility-induced signal losses, we introduced baby cream into the middle ear. To enhance the detection sensitivity of deep brain regions, we implemented inductively coupled ear-b

Decreased structural pathways mediating functional connectivity in obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep breathing disorder that is often accompanied by changes in structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC). However, the current understanding of the interaction between SC and FC in OSA is still limited. METHODS: The aim of this study is to integrate complementary neuroimaging modalities into a unified framework using multi-layer network analysis methods and to reveal their complex interrelationships. We introduce a new graph metric called SC-FC bandwidth, which measures the throughput of SC mediating FC in a multi-lay

Abnormalities of structural covariance of insular subregions in drug-naïve OCD patients.

The insula plays a significant role in the neural mechanisms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Previous studies have identified functional and structural abnormalities in insula in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. The predictive coding model in the context of interoception can explain the psychological and neuropathological manifestations observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder. The model is based on the degree of laminar differentiation of cerebral cortex. The interindividual differences in a local measure of brain structure often covary with interindividual differences in other brai

Whole-brain mapping of afferents to the anterior cingulate cortex in adult mice.

The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is critical for pain perception, emotion and cognition. Previous studies showed that the ACC has a complex network architecture, which can receive some projection fibers from many brain regions, including the thalamus, the cerebral cortex and other brain regions. However, there was still a lack of whole-brain mapping of the ACC in adult mice. In the present study, we utilized a rabies virus-based retrograde trans-monosynaptic tracing system to map whole-brain afferents to the unilateral ACC in adult mice. We also combined with a new high-throughput, high-spe

Functional connectivity alterations in reward-related circuits associated with non-suicidal self-injury behaviors in drug-naïve adolescents with depression.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors are a major public health concern among adolescents with depression. Such behaviors may be associated with the reward system. However, the underlying mechanism in patients with depression and NSSI still remains unclear. A total of 56 drug-naïve adolescents with depression, including 23 patients with NSSI (the NSSI group) and 33 patients without NSSI (the nNSSI group), and 25 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in this study. Seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was used to explore the NSSI-related FC alterations in the reward circuit. Correlation

Longitudinal developmental trajectories of functional connectivity reveal regional distribution of distinct age effects in infancy.

Prior work has shown that different functional brain networks exhibit different maturation rates, but little is known about whether and how different brain areas may differ in the exact shape of longitudinal functional connectivity growth trajectories during infancy. We used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during natural sleep to characterize developmental trajectories of different regions using a longitudinal cohort of infants at 3 weeks (neonate), 1 year, and 2 years of age (n = 90; all with usable data at three time points). A novel whole brain heatmap analysis wa

Glucose metabolism in posterior cingulate cortex has supplementary value to predict the progression of cognitively unimpaired to dementia due to Alzheimer's disease: an exploratory study of 18F-FDG-PET.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau are important biomarkers to predict the progression of cognitively unimpaired (CU) to dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD), according to the diagnosis framework from the US National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA). However, it is clinically difficult to predict those subjects who were already with Aβ positive (A +) or tau positive (T +). As a typical characteristic of neurodegeneration in the diagnosis framework, the hypometabolism of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) has significant clinical value in the early prediction and prevention

Resting-state functional connectivity of the raphe nuclei in major depressive Disorder: A Multi-site study.

Accumulating evidence showed that major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by a dysfunction of serotonin neurotransmission. Raphe nuclei are the sources of most serotonergic neurons that project throughout the brain. Incorporating measurements of activity within the raphe nuclei into the analysis of connectivity characteristics may contribute to understanding how neurotransmitter synthesized centers are involved in thepathogenesisof MDD. Here, we analyzed the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) dataset from 1,148 MDD patients and 1,079 healthy individuals recr

Posterior cingulate cortex spontaneous activity associated with motor response inhibition in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A resting-state fMRI study.

Recent evidence suggests that broad brain regions, not limited to the fronto-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit, play an important role in motor response inhibition. However, it is still unclear which specific key brain region is responsible for impaired motor response inhibition observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We calculated the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) and measured response inhibition ability using the stop-signal task in 41 medication-free patients with OCD and 49 healthy control (HC) participants. We explored the brain region that shows diffe

Exploring the role of empathy in prolonged grief reactions to bereavement.

Grief reactions to the bereavement of a close individual could involve empathy for pain, which is fundamental to social interaction. To explore whether grief symptoms interact with social relatedness to a person to whom one directs empathy to modulate the expression of empathy, we administered an empathy task to 28 bereaved adults during functional magnetic resonance imaging, in which participants were subliminally primed with facial stimuli (e.g., faces of their deceased or living relative, or a stranger), each immediately followed by a visual pain stimulus. Individuals' grief severity promot

Structural and functional deficits and couplings in severe and moderate OCD.

Changes in gray matter volume and functional connections have been frequently observed in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder. However, different grouping may cause diverse volume alterations and could draw more adverse conclusions about the pathophysiology of obsessive compulsive disorder(OCD). Most of them preferred to divide subjects into patients and healthy controls, rather than a detailed subgroup. Moreover, multimodal neuroimaging studies about structural-functional defects and couplings are rather rare. Our aim was to explore gray matter volume(GMV) and functional networks abno

7 T characterization of excitatory and inhibitory systems of acute pain in healthy female participants.

Current understanding of the physiological underpinnings of normative pain processing is incomplete. Enhanced knowledge of these systems is necessary to advance our understanding of pain processes as well as to develop effective therapeutic interventions. Previous neuroimaging research suggests a network of interrelated brain regions that seem to be implicated in the processing and experience of pain. Among these, the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) plays an important role in the affective aspects of pain signals. The current study leveraged functional MRS to investigate the underlying
