The oral cavity as a bioreactor in halitosis.

Halitosis is a prevalent yet often underestimated clinical condition with multifactorial etiology, predominantly arising from intra-oral sources such as periodontal disease, tongue coating and xerostomia. Central to its pathogenesis is the microbial degradation of sulfur-containing substrates, which lead to the production of volatile sulfur compounds and other volatile organic compounds responsible for the characteristic odor. These metabolites are produced by proteolytic anaerobes inhabiting the tongue dorsum, periodontal pockets as well as the dental plaque and predominantly exist as structu…

Halitosis as a symptom of gastroenterological diseases.

Bad breath is a clinical symptom encountered by doctors of various specialties in their daily practice. The symptom causes lower self-esteem and a negative perception of the patient by society, and consequently personal and social isolation. Bad breath can be an early manifestation of many systemic diseases. Because its causes are numerous, it is important to properly diagnose the condition and apply the appropriate treatment. The aim of the study was to present the gastroenterological aspect of halitosis on the basis of available literature reports.

Halitosis in children with adenoid hypertrophy.

This paper attempts to identify the sources and evaluate the prevalence of halitosis in children with adenoid hypertrophy. The study included pediatric patients admitted for adenoidectomy due to obstructive symptoms. Patients with possibly other causes of halitosis, were excluded from the study. Halitosis was detected in 30 out of 136 children (22.1%). The effect of adenoid hypertrophy on halitosis was confirmed by the significant reduction in the organoleptic score rated according to the Rosenberg scale (on average by 2°) and the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (on average 84 ppb) post-ad…

Halitosis: could it be a predictor of stroke?

Stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurological disability and death. Halitosis (bad breath) has been reported in many stroke patients. We speculated that this phenomenon may be present before as well as after a stroke. Moreover, many studies have shown that most of the causes of halitosis are also associated with an increased risk of stroke. Therefore, we hypothesized that the severity of halitosis could be a predictor of stroke. We hope that this hypothesis can be confirmed by further investigations, and that if confirmed it can be used as a tool to monitor disease control…

Halitosis: a review of current literature.

Halitosis is defined as an unpleasant odor that emanates from the oral cavity with intra-oral and/or extra-oral origins. Fifty percent of people worldwide view themselves as having halitosis, with 90% of the etiology being intra-oral. Dental hygiene practitioners should be knowledgeable about the current classifications, diagnosis and treatment modalities to best meet the needs of patients either self-reporting or diagnosed with this problem. Classification of halitosis, assessment, diagnosis, intra-oral and systemic contributing factors, treatment, management and clinical application are disc…

Tonsillolith as a halitosis-inducing factor.

Halitosis, or bad breath, is a common concern for many people. The main causes are known to be periodontal disease and tongue coating. We present a case of an incidental tonsillolith occurrence, which was a halitosis-inducing factor. Our results show that tonsilloliths should be considered as a possible cause of halitosis.

Laser cryptolysis for the treatment of halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the tonsils as a source of halitosis and to assess the efficacy of laser CO(2) cryptolysis for the treatment of oral bad breath caused by chronic fetid tonsillitis. METHODS: Fifty-three patients with halitosis originating from chronic fetid tonsillitis, who completed laser cryptolysis were enrolled in the study. The origin of halitosis was demonstrated by Finkelstein's tonsil smelling test, which included massaging the tonsils and smelling the squeezed discharge. All patients were treated by laser cryptolysis, an office procedure done under topical anesthesia. Subjectiv…

Halitosis: a delayed complication of splenectomy.

Subphrenic abscess is a recognised complication of splenectomy, but fistulation into the stomach is extremely rare. This report describes a delayed complication of splenectomy presenting as offensive and socially disabling halitosis.

Effects of thyme on halitosis in gingivitis patients: Can thyme mouthwash prevent halitosis-A randomized trial.

OBJECTIVES: Bad breath is a condition that negatively affects people's social interactions and quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of thyme mouthwash on intraoral halitosis, gingival index (GI) and plaque index (PI) in patients with gingivitis. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 60 gingivitis patients (30 women/30 men) received initial periodontal treatment followed by oral hygiene instructions (OHI) and then were divided into four groups: The control group (C) received only OHI, while chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash was prescribed to the CHX group, Zinc acetate…
