Small joint fusions of the hand using the Herbert Bone Screw.

The Herbert Bone Screw has a thread at both ends and was originally developed for internal fixation of fractured scaphoid bones. The two main advantages of compression and no head, make it most suitable for internal splinting of the small joints of the hand. The authors have used this device on thirty-nine joints in ten different sites of the hand, and it has proved to be an extremely successful method.

A comparison between radiographic and sonographic assessment of hand and wrist bones for the estimation of skeletal age in the child patient.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to examine, with a sonographic investigation, the hand and wrist bones of a group of young patients and to compare the results with those obtained with a classical radiographic assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Some 25 subjects, 9-18 years of age, who presented problems concerning their short stature or precocious puberty, were evaluated. Each subject was examined by a standard radiographic assessment and by a sonographic investigation with real-time imaging. Sonographic examination was performed on the metacarpus-phalanx articulation of the first finger in

Inflammatory bone spur formation in psoriatic arthritis is different from bone spur formation in hand osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the different patterns of bone spur formation in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and hand osteoarthritis (OA), using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (QCT). METHODS: The study group comprised 70 subjects (25 patients with PsA, 25 patients with hand OA, and 20 healthy controls). The 2 patient groups were similar with regard to age and sex distribution and clinical involvement of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. All patients underwent high-resolution peripheral QCT scanning of the second, third, and fourth MCP joints of the dominantly affected

[A new method of age determination by age-related changes in the hand bone].

An anthropological method designed for determining the age is under discussion; it is based on the point-evaluation of age-related changes observed in the hand bones by X-Ray, i.e. osteophytes, osteoporosis, osteosclerosis and joint deformations. The method was made use of to elaborate a new modified point-based assessment of the above changes in the hand bones with respect to their severity.

Bone loss from the hand in women following distal forearm fracture.

Bone loss occurs after distal forearm fracture, but it is unclear if this bone loss is fully recovered. We designed a cross-sectional study to evaluate the time course of the bone loss from the hand after distal forearm fracture. We identified 40 women who had a fracture of the distal forearm within the previous 4.5 years. Their ages ranged from 42 to 81 (mean 64 years) and time since fracture 6 to 54 (mean 28 months). These were compared with 95 women (mean age 67, range 57 to 80 years) from a population-based cohort. Lumbar spine (LS) and hand bone mineral density (BMD) were measured in all

Precision and accuracy of computed digital absorptiometry for assessment of bone density of the hand.

Widespread osteoporosis testing and diagnosis are currently limited due to the high capital cost and reduced portability of many existing bone densitometry techniques. In this study we evaluated an inexpensive, low radiation, X-ray-based technique for assessing bone density of the middle phalanx. The technique, termed computed digital absorptiometry (CDA), is similar to radiographic absorptiometry (RA), using a single-energy X-ray source, an aluminum alloy step-wedge, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector system to automatically compute bone mineral content (BMC, g) and bone mineral densi

Stabilization of fractures in the hand and wrist with traumatic soft tissue and bone loss.

Open type III fractures of the hand or wrist with severe bone and soft tissue loss justify aggressive treatment to restore anatomy, assure healing, and maximize functional recovery. The techniques of modern wound excision used at initial surgery predictably result in a decompressed and surgically clean wound within a few days from injury in the vast majority of cases. This allows a safe application of delayed primary internal fixation and bone grafting for fracture restoration or joint arthrodesis as well as early wound closure or coverage. The immediate or early application of stable external

Ewing's sarcoma in bones of the hands and feet: a clinicopathologic study and review of the literature.

Review of current data from the Intergroup Ewing's Sarcoma Study (IESS) shows that Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is rare in bones of the hands and feet. Only 12 of 377 evaluable patients in the first two IESS studies had a primary tumor in these small, distal bones. The age distribution was typical for that seen in patients with ES at other sites. Males were affected twice as often as females, and tumors in the bones of the feet were much more common than those in the hands. All signs and symptoms were local in distribution. As in other sites, the dominant histologic pattern was categorized as diffuse.

[In vivo analysis of bone calcium by localized neutron activation of the hand in osteoporosis].

The calcium concentration of the bones of the hand measured by neutron activity was lowered in 93% of osteoporotic women aged between 50 and 60 years and in 66% of women between 60 and 70 years, whereas from the 8th decade onwards, only 5% had a bone calcium concentration of the hand less than that of controls. In the male sex, nearly 80% of osteoporotic patients, had a calcium concentration of the hand less than that of controls whatever their age. Considering the radiological criterion retained for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, the existence of at least one fracture of a vertebral body, the

Aneurysmal bone cyst involving the hand: a review and report of two cases.

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cyst occurred in the hand. One involved the distal phalanx and followed a crushing injury to the tip of the finger; amputation of the part resulted in cure. The other involved almost all of the first metacarpal and was resected and replaced by an iliac bone graft. The appearance of an aneurysmal bone cyst in roentgenograms and after angiography usually is not diagnostic, although benign, progressive growth and potential for recurrence require complete removal.
