AIM: The spectrum of histological alterations, namely atrial amyloidosis, in the right and left atria of patients with chronic persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) and rheumatic heart disease is not completely known.
METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-eight atrial appendages (66 left and 62 right), obtained from 72 patients with rheumatic valve disease and chronic AF undergoing cardiac surgery for valve replacement or repair and AF treatment were histologically evaluated for the presence of amyloid deposits. One hundred and four specimens of left and right auricles from 52 patients in

Concentration-response curves for the chronotropic and inotropic effects of isoprenaline, in the absence and presence of propranolol, were obtained on heart atria isolated from normo- or dysthyroid rats. Hyperthyroidism increased the chronotropic potency and efficacy of the beta-adrenergic agonist. The results are compatible with the view that thyroid hormone increases the density of functional beta-adrenoceptors in cardiac pacemaker tissue.

Cardiomyopathies with intracellular inclusions are a distinct subset of cardiomyopathies whereas basophilic degeneration (BD) of the heart describes inclusions in cardiomyocytes of the aging heart, which have not yet been related to a specific disease condition or to a distinct type of protein inclusion. To address the question whether BD represents a specific pathological feature and whether it is linked to a distinct disease condition we studied 62 autopsy cases. BD inclusions exhibited an immunohistochemical staining pattern related to glycosylated, δ- or η-secretase-derived N-terminal clea

When beagle dogs were infected with Trypanosoma brucei, a marked reduction in the plasma concentration of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) occurred in the terminal stage of the disease during weeks 3 and 4. At the same time there was an increase in plasma renin activity (PRA) after infection. Ultrastructural studies of the atria of these dogs demonstrated a reduction in ANF granules. The changes in ANF and PRA occurred in association with severe pancarditis and the development of heart failure. By impairing the ability of the heart and kidneys to regulate blood volume, the alterations in ANF an

UNLABELLED: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is characterized by a diverse clinical and morphological spectrum. In this report we describe five patients with atypical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and significantly dilated atria. Diagnostic difficulties are stressed. All patients underwent clinical examination, noninvasive studies including 2-D echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization. In three patients endomyocardial biopsy was taken and examined by light microscopy. All but one patient were men, ranging in age from 28 years to 40 years at initial examination. In all patients disproportion between mi

We present the case of a 34-year-old patient with an unresectable cardiac sarcoma who underwent a total cardiectomy followed by implantation of 2 HeartMate 3 devices in a total artificial heart configuration. Surgical treatment of cardiac sarcomas ranges from palliative debulking to heart transplantation. In contrast to conventional total artificial heart placement, complete removal of both atrioventricular connections was mandated by the underlying pathologic process. Hemodynamic performance of 2 continuous flow pumps in the absence of native atria and the heart reservoir function depends on

BACKGROUND: Primary mitral regurgitation (PMR) is associated with oxidative and inflammatory myocardial damage. We reported greater exosome hemoglobin (Hb) in pericardial fluid (PCF) versus plasma, suggesting a cardiac source of Hb.
OBJECTIVE: Test the hypothesis that Hb is produced in the PMR heart and is associated with increased inflammation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Hb gene expression for subunits alpha (HBA) and beta (HBB) was assessed in right atria (RA), left atria (LA) and left ventricular (LV) tissue from donor hearts (n = 10) and PMR patient biopsies at surgery (n = 11). PMR patients (

Primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) is a very rare kind of primary heart tumor, belonging to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma whose major pathological type is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The common symptoms include heart failure, pericardial effusion, and malignant arrhythmias. Early diagnosis and treatment of PCL are of great importance due to its merely 7-month median survival period. Here, we report a 48-year-old male patient in whom both atria were involved and had to undergo palliative surgery because of severe clinical symptoms.

Conjoined twins (CTs), popularly referred to as Siamese twins, are a rare anomaly due to monochorionic and monoamniotic twin pregnancies. Dicephalus dibrachius dipus, a type of parapagus conjoined twin which is characterized by possessing two arms, two legs, a single trunk and two heads, epidemiologically, is an even rarer occurrence of CTs. In this article, a rare, well-preserved anatomical specimen of a dicephalus dibrachius dipus conjoined twin is presented. This study was conducted in a specimen which is part of the collection of the Embryology Museum of the institution by donation and app

Cor triatriatum dextrum was an incidental echocardiographic finding in a 5 year old boy and a 9 year old girl, who were evaluated for the presence of a heart murmur. Apart from slightly enlarged right atria, they had otherwise normal hearts and were symptomless. Most of the patients reported until then had been symptomatic due either to the persistent right sinus venosus valve or to commonly associated structural heart anomalies. Therefore, the clinical significance of asymptomatic cor triatriatum dextrum remains coniectural, but might lie in the possibility of development of arrhythmia, progr

A case is presented in which mediastinal fibrosis had extended to involve the right lung, the diaphragm, the lower vena cava near the heart, and both atria including the interatrial septum. There is no previous report of this disease in such an extensive form. The relatively unusual clinical picture is discussed with regard to the pathophysiologic, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic problems it presents. The diagnosis could only be established postoperatively in our patient. In the course of a thoracotomy carried out to resect a neoplasm, an extensive, infiltrative tumorous process was disc

The prevalence of left atrial spontaneous echo contrast (SEC) and the occurrence of systemic embolism were prospectively studied in 176 consecutive patients. All had significant mitral regurgitation (MR) and underwent transesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) studies. Left ventriculography was performed in all patients to document the severity of MR. The underlying causes of MR included rheumatic heart disease in 84 patients, ruptured chordae tendineae in 37, mitral valve prolapse in 18, infective endocarditis in 20, coronary artery disease in 8, congenital heart disease in 5, and dilated cardio

Heterotaxy syndrome is a term used to describe disorders of lateralization of thoracic and abdominal organs as well as atria. It is commonly associated with complex congenital heart disease as well as abnormalities of the spleen, intestinal malrotation, and abnormalities of liver and stomach position. Most reported cases of heterotaxy syndrome are sporadic, though familial occurrences have also been reported. We report a case of monozygotic twins, both with heterotaxy syndrome, complex congenital heart disease, and anatomical features in both twins that are almost mirror images to each other.

The cardiovascular system of the dicephalus (2 spines, one pelvis) conjoined twins is being described. The heart consists of 2 atria and 3 ventricles. Various malformations are evident in the layout systematic and pulmonary circulation. The vascular system can be divided into 3 zones: an upper one--with an almost symmetrical duplication, a middle one--with an atypical pattern, and a lower one--with a normal pattern.

We report a case of a 72-year-old lady with rheumatic heart disease and chronic, long-lasting atrial fibrillation, who reverted spontaneously to sinus rhythm. Doppler study showed evidence of mechanical contraction of the right but not of the left atrium. This may be a sign of marked histologic changes in the atria and may require the insertion of a permanent pacemaker, because of subsequent development of sinus bradycardia.

Ambient temperature has a profound influence on cellular electrophysiology through direct control over the gating mechanisms of different ion channels. In the heart, low temperature is known to favor prolongation of the action potential. However, not much is known about the influence of temperature on other important characterization parameters such as the resting membrane potential (RMP), excitability, morphology and characteristics of the action potential (AP), restitution properties, conduction velocity (CV) of signal propagation, etc. Here we present the first, detailed, systematic in sili

Mirror-image dextrocardia is a rare congenital cardiovascular disease in which the main part of the heart is located on the right side of the thoracic cavity, with the tip of the heart pointing to the right side and the positions of the ventricles, atria, large arteries, and veins resembling those of a normal heart. The case of mirror-image dextrocardia combined with atrial septal defect, moderate tricuspid valve insufficiency, and moderate to severe pulmonary hypertension is even rarer. Investigations, performed in organ complexes of neck and mediastinum in 50 corpses of adults, demonstrated, that all cervical cardiac nerves and cardiac branches of vagal nerves are united into a single plexus, branches of which form the nerves, approaching the heart. Some of them are formed under the aortal arch and behind the brachiocephalic trunk. They are located on the ascending aorta and on the pulmonary trunk, approaching the coronary sulcus of the heart, participating in the innervation of all its regions. Other preorgan cardiac nerves are formed under the pulmonary arteries, approach

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained dysrhythmia in the elderly population. It is estimated to affect more than 30 million people worldwide. AF occurs when abnormal electrical impulses start to activate in the atria and override the heart's natural pacemaker, which can no longer control the heart's rhythm. Since atrial contractility is impaired in AF, blood flow in the atria becomes stasis over time and causes thrombus formation. This thrombus causes the risk of embolism and causes complications such as stroke. Therefore, it is a fundamental cause of cardiovascular mortality a
