Heat stress is a major factor that negatively affects animal welfare and production systems. Livestock should adapt to tropical and subtropical areas and to meet this, composite breeds have been developed. This work aimed to evaluate gene expression profiles in the skin of Brangus cattle under heat stress using a case-control design, and to correlate this with skin histological characteristics. Two groups of bulls were set using rectal temperature as a criterion to define stress conditions: stressed (N = 5) and non-stressed (N = 5) groups. Skin transcriptomics was performed and correlations be

BACKGROUND: Genetic selection based on direct indicators of heat stress could capture additional mechanisms that are involved in heat stress response and enable more accurate selection for more heat-tolerant individuals. Therefore, the main objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for various heat stress indicators in a commercial population of Landrace × Large White lactating sows measured under heat stress conditions. The main indicators evaluated were: skin surface temperatures (SST), automatically-recorded vaginal temperature (TV), respiration rate (RR), panting score (

Women can now serve in ground close combat (GCC) roles, where they may be required to operate alongside men in hot environments. However, relative to the average male soldier, female soldiers are less aerobically fit, with a smaller surface area (A D), lower mass (m) with higher body fat and a larger A D/m ratio. This increases cardiovascular strain, reduces heat exchange with the environment and causes a greater body temperature increase for a given heat storage, although a large A D/m ratio can be advantageous. Physical employment standards for GCC roles might lessen the magnitude of fitness

The effects of environmental heat-stress on production and reproduction in dairy cows have been intensively studied throughout the past few decades. In light of climate changes and global warming, this issue has gained attention worldwide. So far, most of the documentations are related to warmer-climate regions, however, environmental thermal stress has recently been reported in cooler regions, such as Europe. The review attempts to present the experiences from the past years and lessons for the present. The review highlights some of the environmental characterizations and provides some practi

During vertebrate embryonic development, early skin, muscle, and bone progenitor populations organize into segments known as somites. Defects in this conserved process of segmentation lead to skeletal and muscular deformities, such as congenital scoliosis, a curvature of the spine caused by vertebral defects. Environmental stresses such as hypoxia or heat shock produce segmentation defects, and significantly increase the penetrance and severity of vertebral defects in genetically susceptible individuals. Here we show that a brief exposure to a high osmolarity solution causes reproducible segme

BACKGROUND: From field harvest to the consumer's table, fresh citrus fruit spends a considerable amount of time in shipment and storage. During these processes, physiological disorders and pathological diseases are the main causes of fruit loss. Heat treatment (HT) has been widely used to maintain fruit quality during postharvest storage; however, limited molecular information related to this treatment is currently available at a systemic biological level.
RESULTS: Mature 'Kamei' Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) fruits were selected for exploring the disease resistance mechanisms induce

Study objectives were to determine the effects of rapamycin (Rapa) on biomarkers of metabolism and inflammation during acute heat stress (HS) in growing pigs. Crossbred barrows (n = 32; 63.5 ± 7.2 kg body weight [BW]) were blocked by initial BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 environmental-therapeutic treatments: 1) thermoneutral (TN) control (n = 8; TNCon), 2) TN and Rapa (n = 8; TNRapa), 3) HS control (n = 8; HSCon), or 4) HS and Rapa (n = 8; HSRapa). Following 6 d of acclimation to individual pens, pigs were enrolled in two experimental periods (P). During P1 (10 d), pigs were fed ad libitu

Heat exposure is an increasingly important climate-related determinant of mental health, yet the biological mechanisms linking heat to psychiatric outcomes remain insufficiently integrated. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from climate medicine, thermoregulation, neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology, sleep research, psychopharmacology, epidemiology, and psychiatry to examine how acute and chronic heat exposure may influence mental health. Heat acts as a multi-system biological stressor by challenging thermoregulation, increasing autonomic and cardiovascular strain, disrupting hydratio

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a familial disorder that is often exacerbated by stress or fatigue. Here we present a family of a TS proband that has several members with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, a bleeding disorder, and an unusual sensitivity to heat. The proband, who is affected by all of these traits, was challenged with heat or exercise in climate-controlled conditions and showed a marked increase in the frequency of tics.

Heat stress adversely affects male reproductive function, yet its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study investigated the impact of heat stress on the reproductive system in adult male SD rats. Results demonstrated that heat stress significantly up-regulated testicular HSP70 expression, reduced testicular index, sperm vitality, and sperm density. Serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and superoxide dismutase activity were notably decreased, indicating disrupted reproductive endocrinology and impaired antioxidant capacity, respectively. Further analysis revealed

Blood heat syndrome, one of the main subtypes of blood syndrome in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), is mainly diagnosed by bleeding and heat manifestations and treated by the blood-cooling method. The biological essence of blood heat syndrome has not been elucidated yet, and there is a lack of systematic research on the potential mechanisms underlying the blood-cooling method. The biological essence of blood heat syndrome is closely related to abnormal immune response, oxidative stress, coagulation dysfunction, endocrine disorders, abnormalities in energy metabolism and so on. This study aimed to better understand environmental heat stress and physiological heat strain indicators in lactating dairy cows. Sixteen heat stress indicators were derived using microenvironmental parameters that were measured at the surrounding of cows and at usual fixed locations in the barn by using handheld and fixed subarea sensors, respectively. Twenty high-producing Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (> 30.0 kg/day) from an intensive dairy farm were chosen to measure respiration rate (RR), vaginal temperature (VT), and body surface temperature of forehead (FT), eye (ET), and muzzle (MT). Currently, the world is facing the negative impact of global warming on all living beings. Adverse effects of global warming are also becoming obvious in dairy cattle breeding. In dairy bulls, low fertility has frequently been reported during summer season especially in tropical or subtropical conditions. Typically, spermatozoa at post-meiotic stages of development are more susceptible to heat stress. During this period extensive incorporation of histone modifications and hyperacetylation turns the chromatin into an unstable conformation. These unstable forms of chromatin are thought to be mor

This experiment measured the impact of rapid heat stress (RHS) on five cognitive domains: immediate memory, visuospatial perception, expressive language functioning, attention, and delayed memory, using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). RHS refers to a form of uncompensable heat stress characterized by a swift rise in core temperature during exercise while wearing fully encapsulated personal protective equipment (PPE). Our previous research has demonstrated that similar conditions have resulted in specific changes in electroencephalography (EEG), c
