BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infect over a billion individuals worldwide. In India, 241 million children are estimated to need deworming to avert the negative consequences STH infections can have on child health and development. In February-April 2011, 17 million children in Bihar State were dewormed during a government-led school-based deworming campaign. Prior to programme implementation, a study was conducted to assess STH prevalence in the school-age population to direct the programme. The study also investigated risk factors for STH infections, including caste, literacy, …

In order to investigate the status of intestinal helminthic infections in Cambodia, epidemiological surveys were carried out on a national scale, including 19 provinces. A total of 32,201 fecal samples were collected from schoolchildren and adults between 2006 and 2011 and examined once by the Kato-Katz thick smear technique. The overall egg positive rate of intestinal helminths was 26.2%. The prevalence of hookworms was the highest (9.6%), followed by that of Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal flukes (Ov/MIF) (5.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (4.6%), and Trichuris trichiura (4.1%). Other typ…

Camels are multipurpose animals in Iran. As parasitic diseases are the major cause of impaired meat and milk production in this animal, the present study aimed at determining gastrointestinal helminthic infections of Iranian camels in the center of the country. Gastrointestinal (GI) tract of 144 carcasses of one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) slaughtered in Yazd, Esfahan and Kerman provinces' abattoirs were examined for adult helminths. Camels were from both sexes and different ages. Recovered parasites were identified according to described keys by light microscope. Of 144 tested camels,…

Evidence on the comorbidity between soil-transmitted helminth infections and malaria is scarce and divergent. This study explored the intera … 0.43; 95% CI: 0.18-1.04) and the occurrence of falciparum malaria. The effects of soil-transmitted helminths on the occurrence of malaria were found to be paradoxical. While hookworm is a risk factor, A. lumbricoides has a protective effect. The findings suggest that, in addition to the comorbidity, the presence of common determinants of soil-transmitted h …

These results demonstrate that basophils play an important role for protective immunity against helminths and orchestrate chronic allergic inflammation, whereas primary Th2 cell responses can operate efficiently in the absence of this cell type.

This article reviews the principles involved in establishing the cost effectiveness of mass drug therapy for the major intestinal nematodes … Mass treatment targeted at known high risk groups, such as schoolchildren, for the major intestinal helminths (apart from hookworm) can be more cost effective than population-based mass treatment. However, this raises the question whether any form of mass anthelmintic chemotherapy is an efficient use of scare health resources in view of the competing demand …

The study reports on 25 cases of xerophthalmia among children 6-120 months of age and single controls for which faecal egg counts were available as proxy for hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides infection. The selection of cases and controls was performed by ophthalmic assistants. Controls were healthy children matched for sex, age, and neighbourhood of residence. Faecal analyses were performed by Kato thick-smear technique, recording the number of eggs of hookworm and A. lumbricoides. The xerophthalmia cases had a significantly higher prevalence (P < 0.05) and intensity (P < 0.01) of infection,

Six parasitic helminths detected were Ancylostoma sp., Opisthorchis felineus, Toxocara mystrax, Hepaticola hepatica, Taenia sp. and Hydatigera taeniaeformis. The prevalence of H. hepatica, T. mystrax and H. taeniaeformis is associated with rodents hunted by cats, and that of O. felineus with fish fed to cats. The role of cats as primary host and reservoir for these helminths, which could be of zoonotic importance, is briefly mentioned.

The aim of the study was to determine the structure of helminth communities of White Stork in north-eastern Poland in the years 2015-2018. The study material comprised 61 White Storks Ciconia ciconia from within the borders of Biebrza National Park. Seven parasite taxa were detected in the storks. The cestode Dictymetra riccii, the nematode Dispharynx cf. nasuta, and acanthocephalans are new parasites for storks in Poland. Prevalence of helminths was 32.8%, with a mean intensity of 12.2, in a range from 1 to 60 and with mean abundance of 3.8. The biodiversity of the component community express…

Seabirds are largely used as indicators of Ocean health and are final hosts of several helminth parasites. However, the helminth fauna of seabirds is still poorly studied. Here, we quantified the diversity of gastrointestinal parasites in 52 individuals belonging to 10 seabird species with different habitat preferences and feeding strategies from the North-East Atlantic and Antarctica. Fresh carcasses were collected in Northern France and at Svarthamaren (Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica), helminth parasites were extracted from the gastrointestinal tract, and were identified by morphological ins

Maternal environmental exposures can alter microbiome composition and lead to changes in offspring immunity. Industrialization has led to significant shifts in the microbiome, but whether these have transgenerational impacts remains unclear. Here, we discovered that maternal helminths, an evolutionarily conserved mammalian partner lost in industrialized societies, confer broad and lasting protection against respiratory viruses in offspring. This heterologous antiviral immunity is mediated by helminth-induced changes in the maternal microbiota. The tryptophan metabolite indole-3-propionic acid …

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) of soil-transmitted helminth parasites against the most widely available drugs is an ongoing concern for both human-infecting and livestock-infecting species. There has been substantial evidence of AR in livestock but less in humans, which may be due to a variety of reasons. In this paper, we develop an eco-evolutionary model that couples the life cycle of these parasites with their underlying evolution in a single biallelic genetic locus that confers resistance to treatment drugs. We determine the critical treatment frequency needed to effectively eliminate the po

Amphibians face numerous threats, including climate change, pollution, and emerging infectious diseases. While chytrid fungi have dominated recent research on amphibian pathogens, helminth parasites, despite their diversity and potential to impact amphibian health, remain underexplored, particularly in Europe. The goal of this review is to highlight the current state of knowledge on amphibian helminths in Europe, including current knowledge on species diversity, parasites' life history, and the availability of molecular data. We outline major challenges in amphibian helminthology and propose s…

The most important soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) affecting humans are roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms, with a large proportion of the world's population infected with one or more of these intestinal parasites. On top of that, concurrent infections with several viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and other helminths such as trematodes are common in STH-endemic areas. STHs are potent immunomodulators, but knowledge about the effects of STH infection on the direction and extent of coinfections with other pathogens and vice versa is incomplete. By focusing on Kenya, a country where STH infection…
