Two persistent problems confront anyone wishing to gauge the public-health cost and impact of hemorrhoids. First, there is the slipperiness of the term "hemorrhoids," which both patients and physicians use with imprecision. Second, there is endoscopic over-diagnosis of prominent anal cushions as internal hemorrhoids. While these factors both inflate the apparent cost of hemorrhoids, the fact remains that hemorrhoid diagnosis and treatment has become a billion-dollar industry.

We report a case of advanced grades of bleeding hemorrhoids in a 10-yrs-old boy, who had a history of bleeding per rectum since he was 5 year of age. The diagnosis was made on anoscopic examination after ruling out other colorectal pathologies by a full-length colonoscopy. There was no evidence of portal hypertension. A compression method was used as a final stage of surgical treatment of hemorrhoids which was performed with a specially worked out compressing probe (two latex cuffs were mounted on the three-lumen rubber tube). Hemorrhoidal disease affects more than one million Americans per year. We reviewed the treatment pattern for patients who presented with symptomatic hemorrhoids to our large university-affiliated group practice over a 66-month period. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to compare the long-term results of stapled hemorrhoidopexy with conventional excisional hemorrhoidectomy in patients with internal hemorrhoids.

In the population of pregnant women in Serbia and Montenegro, hemorrhoids are present in 85% of the cases during the second and third pregnancy. Urged by the complications of non-treated hemorrhoids, we carried out a routine diagnostic procedure to examine hemorrhoids during pregnancy, i.e. a differential diagnosis with other possible complications was performed.
