Medicinal importance of Papra (Podophyllum hexandrum Royle) in Unani System of Medicine.

Podophyllum hexandrum Royle [=Sinopodophyllum hexandrum (Royle) T.S. Ying] is an important, endemic medicinal plant species of Himalaya. It is used in Unani System of Medicine under the name of 'Papra'. The drug was not mentioned in previous literatures, but the first time it introduced in Unani Medicine by a great scholar Hakim Najmul Ghani. He has mentioned its uses and benefits in his classical book Khazainul Advia. In Unani Medicine the plant species has been used to treat various ailments like constipation, fever, jaundice, liver disorders, syphilis, diseases of lymph glands etc. In Kashm

Phenotypic differentiation in the Himalayan medicinal plant Nardostachys jatamansi: morpho-physiological and phytochemical variation across elevation gradients.

Phenotypic variation occurs across heterogeneous habitats. As a medicinally valuable species widely distributed across subalpine to alpine regions of the Himalayas, Nardostachys jatamansi exhibits a remarkable ecological breadth, though the consequences of its geographic variation remain poorly understood. In this study, individuals with spatulate leaves and fibrous leaf sheaths (type I) were predominantly distributed in the southern regions of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, which were characterized by warmer and moister climates. In contrast, those with lanceolate leaves and lamellar sheaths (t

The evolution of flower-pollinator trait matching, and why do some alpine gingers appear to be mismatched?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Morphological matching between flower and pollinator traits has been documented in diverse plant lineages. Indeed, the matching of corolla tube length and pollinator tongue length has been cited repeatedly as a classic case of coevolution. However, there are many possible evolutionary routes to trait matching. Our aim here is both to review the evolutionary mechanisms of plant-pollinator trait matching and to investigate a specific case of trait matching/mismatching in a genus of alpine gingers. METHODS: Roscoea gingers with long corolla tubes in the western Himalayas hav

Seasonal progression of surface ozone and NOx concentrations over three tropical stations in North-East India.

Monitoring of surface ozone (O3) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are vital for understanding the variation and exposure impact of these trace gases over the habitat. The present study analyses the in situ observations of surface O3 and NOx for January-December 2016, for the first time over three sites of North-Eastern India (Aizwal, Gauhati and Tezpur). The sites are major cities of north-eastern India, located in the foothills of Eastern Himalaya and have no industrial impacts. We have analysed the seasonal variation of O3 and NOx and found that the site Tezpur, which is in the valley area of Easte

High-altitude pulmonary hypertension: a pathophysiological entity to different diseases.

Pulmonary hypertension is a hallmark of high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and of congestive right heart failure in subacute mountain sickness (SMS) and chronic mountain sickness (CMS) in the Himalayas and in the end-stage of CMS (Monge's disease) in the Andes. There are studies to suggest that transmission of excessively elevated pulmonary artery pressure and/or flow to the pulmonary capillaries leading to alveolar haemorrhage is the pathophysiological mechanism of HAPE. In the Himalayas, HAPE was successfully prevented by extending the acclimatisation period from a few days to 5 weeks, ho

Trends and variability of temperature and precipitation extremes in Leh (Ladakh), India.

The Himalayas, a critical climatic barrier and water resource system for South Asia, are increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts. This study investigates long-term trends in temperature and precipitation in Leh, Ladakh, a cold-arid, high-altitude region spanning the western Himalaya and Karakoram, using gridded meteorological datasets spanning 1951-2024. The Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator were applied at 90% and 95% confidence levels to detect climatic trends, alongside analyses of departures from long-term normals. Results indicate a gradual warming tendency, particular

Respiratory adaptation in the highest inhabitants and highest Sherpa mountaineers.

Arterial blood gases, acid-base and hematocrit of six highest inhabitants on Aucanquilcha (5950 m) in Chile were studied. These blood gases were compared with the alveolar gases of highest mountain climbers in Nepal, Sherpas and acclimatized lowlanders, and on average high altitude natives in the Chilean and Peruvian Andes and in the Nepal Himalayas. The mean arterial PCO2 (27.5 Torr) was lower than the standard sea level normal values, indicating a modest hypoxic hyperventilation. The mean arterial pH was 7.400, showing a complete renal compensation of respiratory alkalosis. The mean hematocr

Spine surgery in Nepal: the 2015 earthquake.

At noon on Saturday, 25 April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. It was centered in the Himalaya northwest of Kathmandu, the capital of over 1 million people. The violent tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi, India 1,000 km from the epicenter, but the worst of its destructive force was experienced in the heavily populated Kathmandu valley and in the remote mountainous villages of the Himalaya. Ancient temples crumbled; poorly constructed buildings collapsed; men, women, and children were trapped and injured, sometimes fatally. Avalanches killed mountain climbers, Sherpa guide

Ecology, host plant resistance, and management of paddy black beetle (Heteronychus lioderes) in rice under north-western Himalayan conditions.

The paddy black beetle, Heteronychus lioderes Redtenbacher, has emerged as an important soil-dwelling pest in rice ecosystems of the north-western Himalayas. This study evaluated its population dynamics, host plant resistance, and management under mid-hills field conditions. The pest appeared in late July and peaked in early August, causing up to 48.4% tiller infestation. Population build-up showed significant positive correlation with minimum temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall. Screening of 60 rice genotypes revealed no highly resistant entries, although T-23 and Vallabh Basmati-24

Ecological considerations in scrub typhus. 1. Emerging concepts.

Scrub typhus infection is now known to occur in geographical and ecological areas where its presence was hitherto unsuspected-north and west of the Indus River and in south-eastern Siberia; in semi-desert, montane desert, and alpine terrain high in the Himalayas, as well as in primary jungle. Additional data are presented to support the hypothesis that "ecological islands", containing basically similar faunas of rodents and ectoparasites, exist on scattered mountains in the Pakistan Himalayas, despite the intervening "barriers" of desert, broad rivers and massive peaks. Since scrub typhus has

Early Safety Results from the Phase 3b SIERRA Study of Durvalumab and Tremelimumab as First-Line Treatment for Participants with Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma and a Poor Prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: Subgroups of people with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC) are often excluded from clinical trials due to adverse prognostic factors. The SIERRA (NCT05883644) study assesses the efficacy and safety of STRIDE (Single Tremelimumab Regular Interval Durvalumab) in clinically relevant subgroups of uHCC with poorer prognosis, including participants with more decompensated hepatic function, worse performance status, or more advanced disease than the HIMALAYA (NCT03298451) study. METHODS: SIERRA is a phase 3b, single-arm, multicenter study that enrolled participants with uHCC

Seasonal dynamics and radiative impact of fire-influenced aerosols over a semi-urban site in the Western Himalayan region.

Forest fires in the Himalaya act as episodic yet powerful sources of aerosols, exerting strong perturbations on regional air quality, radiative forcing, and climate feedback. This study investigates the role of fire emissions in modulating aerosol properties and atmospheric heating over Katarmal (29.64°N, 79.62°E; 1225 m amsl), a western Himalayan semi-urban site from 2019 to 2024. Multi-year ground-based observations of black carbon, aerosol absorption (σabs,λ), aerosol optical depth (AOD), and meteorological parameters were analysed to contrast fire (FF1-FF6) and non-fire conditions. Seasona

Cultural and ethnopharmacological uses of wildlife in the himalayan region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan has a rich cultural and faunal diversity, which sustains several ethnic communities that rely on traditional medicine for primary care. The Himalayan region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan is rich in biodiversity and home to a variety of ethnic communities, each of which practices its own ethnobiological medicine. Despite this, little is known about the use of animal-based traditional medicine in this area. This project seeks to investigate and describe the cultural and medicinal uses of animals among indigenous groups in the study area. METHODS: The study was carri

Fulminant high altitude blindness.

Prolonged altitude exposure even with acclimatization continues to present a physiological challenge to all organ systems including the central nervous system. We describe a case of a 41-year-old Caucasian female climber who suffered severe visual loss that was due to possible optic nerve pathology occurring during a high altitude expedition in the Himalayas. This case is atypical of classic high altitude cerebral oedema and highlights yet another danger of prolonged sojourn at extreme altitudes.

mtDNA from the early Bronze Age to the Roman period suggests a genetic link between the Indian subcontinent and Mesopotamian cradle of civilization.

Ancient DNA methodology was applied to analyse sequences extracted from freshly unearthed remains (teeth) of 4 individuals deeply deposited in slightly alkaline soil of the Tell Ashara (ancient Terqa) and Tell Masaikh (ancient Kar-Assurnasirpal) Syrian archaeological sites, both in the middle Euphrates valley. Dated to the period between 2.5 Kyrs BC and 0.5 Kyrs AD the studied individuals carried mtDNA haplotypes corresponding to the M4b1, M49 and/or M61 haplogroups, which are believed to have arisen in the area of the Indian subcontinent during the Upper Paleolithic and are absent in people l

Retinal haemorrhage in Himalayan mountaineers.

The fundi of 14 climbers were monitored on ascent to 6000 metres over a 15 day period in the Nepal Himalaya. A total of 4 climbers experienced symptomless haemorrhages. These haemorrhages were not secondary to changes in haemoglobin concentration, nor did they appear correlated to the use of acetazolamide. The risk of developing retinal haemorrhage was, however, significantly greater in the better acclimatized individuals. Possible reasons for this relationship are discussed.

Phenotypic variability and floral trait associations in bael [Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa] from the North-Western Himalayan plains.

Bael is a medicinal fruit tree of considerable economic and therapeutic importance and is predominantly propagated through seeds. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate and interpret variation in floral characteristics among eighty wild bael genotypes, alongside two widely cultivated varieties, NB-5 and NB-9. Among the genotypes examined, JMU-Bael (Sel-27) consistently recorded the highest measurements for most floral attributes, including flower and bud dimensions, petal size, pedicel traits, as well as reproductive organ characteristics such as filament, anther, ovary, style an
