Unavoidable Adverse Reactions: A Medical-Historical Study of the Demise of Five-Stone Powder(Wushisan, ) in Tang-Song China.

Wushisan(Five-Stone Powder) was one of the most widely consumed mineral-based medicines from the Six Dynasties through the Tang period. Modern scholarship, however, has often portrayed it primarily as a symbol of aristocratic decadence and moral excess. This interpretation, shaped largely by the enlightenment discourse that emerged after Lu Xun and reinforced by modern biomedical perspectives emphasizing its toxicity and adverse effects, has tended to overlook why the medicine continued to be used for centuries and the therapeutic rationale and technical foundations that sustained its populari

Preconquest Peruvian neurosurgeons: a study of Inca and pre-Columbian trephination and the art of medicine in ancient Peru.

Trephination and craniotomy performed by abrasion, scraping, crosscut sawing, and drilling are the oldest known surgical techniques used by primitive peoples. As a result of archaeological findings, the human skull is the most frequently studied part of the excavated body, leading to the creation of a new aspect of anthropology known as "cultural osteology." Found in ancient tombs, the human remains, mummies, skeletons, and their belongings, including war instruments, pottery, clothing, jewels, and surgical instruments, constitute the richest source of insight into the lives and pragmatic acti

[Death and dying in medieval times].

Out of the complex theme a specific phenomenon is chosen which most likely can be assigned to the appearance of the plague in Europe in the late medieval times: 'the dance of death' mainly in its artistic, particular graphical expression. To this intent the 2600 originals of the Düsseldorf University collection are used. The prerequisites for this novel art are discussed: the sudden outbreak of the plague in Italy 1347/48, the precursors of the legend about the three living and the three dead, the so-called 'transitoriness poems', the 'Conflictus literature' and other ideas about symbolism of

[Spotted typhoid fever in the Iceland of the sagas?].

In spite of Iceland's geographically isolated position, epidemics of infectious diseases obviously occurred from the very beginning, brought to the island by the first Norwegian settlers and their cattle in the 9th century. People living close together in small farming communities were of course exposed to infection, which must have been common in the narrow Icelandic farmhouses. People had very little understanding or knowledge of protection against contagion, and the whole family, often sleeping together in the same bed, would be an easy prey to contagion. Epidemics were often regarded as ca

"Svá daufr orðinn, at hann mátti eigi heyra": a critical exploration of depictions of deaf and non-speaking characters in medieval Icelandic literature.

This article revisits the polarities of oralist and cultural-linguistic approaches to deaf identities through the perspective of the medieval Icelandic sagas, a product of mainly the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. Through a historically informed close reading of the Sagas of Early Icelanders corpus, 5 saga episodes were selected for further analysis with regard to the meaning of being deaf and/or non-speaking and intersections with other social categories like gender and class. This study suggests diverse ways in which being deaf and/or non-speaking was given meaning before the advent of o

Leprosy in the Middle Ages: A European perspective.

Leprosy is one of the major mycobacterial diseases caused by Mycobacterium (M.) leprae or M. lepromatosis. Although there is scientific evidence for human leprosy from the Iron Age, it became more prevalent during medieval times, deeply affecting society and social life. Leprosy was considered a consequence of sin and was later thought to a certain extent to be inherited. Lepers were declared legally dead and excluded from normal social life. In the 14th century, the medicalization of leprosy began. Leprosaria became the earliest hospitals in the Middle Ages that were specialized for a single
