Understanding Adult Attitudes Toward Corporal Punishment in Honduras: The Role of Sex, Gender Roles, Education, Childhood Experiences, and Psychopathy.

Corporal punishment (CP) remains a contentious issue in child-rearing debates, with varying opinions influenced by cultural, educational, and personal experiences. This study investigates the impact of sex, educational level, witnessing domestic violence, and experiencing physical and psychological abuse during childhood on adults' attitudes toward CP. In addition, it explores the mediating roles of stereotypical gender roles and psychopathy in these relationships. Four hundred fifty Honduran adults completed an online survey. Of the total sample, 66.67% were female. A quantitative cross-secti

Improving fidelity of implementation of self-administered pulse oximetry and remote patient monitoring in Honduras during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Honduras' Secretariat of Health was eager to understand whether self-administered pulse oximetry could improve clinical outcomes of high-risk COVID-19 patients. While these interventions show promise for expanding healthcare access in lower- and middle-income countries, evidence about contextual implementation fidelity and effectiveness remains limited. We conducted a retrospective fidelity of implementation analysis of phone-based patient monitoring with or without self-administered pulse oximetry in Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela, Honduras. Using Carroll's Conceptu…

Evaluation of Regulatory Immune Response in Skin Lesions of Patients Affected by Nonulcerated or Atypical Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Honduras, Central America.

In Honduras, Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi causes both visceral leishmaniasis (LV) and nonulcerated or atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis (NUCL). NUCL is characterized by mononuclear inflammatory infiltration of the dermis, composed mainly of lymphocytes followed by macrophages with discrete parasitism. Considering that little is known about the pathogenesis of NUCL, the aim of this study was to evaluate the regulatory response in situ in skin lesions of patients affected by NUCL. Biopsies (n = 20) from human cutaneous nonulcerative lesions were collected and processed by usual histological t…

Homocystinuria in a consanguineous indigenous family from rural Honduras: a ten-year follow up and literature review of familial cases.

Homocystinuria (HCU) is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder, characterized by a mutation in the enzyme cystathionine beta-synthase and abnormally high levels of homocysteine in the blood. HCU that runs in a family is rare; prior to this report, there have been only 150 familial cases described in the literature. Here, we describe a familial cluster of HCU in four children in "Family V," a consanguineous indigenous family from rural Honduras with a 10-year clinical follow up. We describe the diagnosis, presentation and progression of three patients who were diagnosed in 2015; critical…

Detection of Leishmania infantum DNA in Sand Flies and Assessment of Zoonotic Transmission Risk in Central Honduras: A One Health Approach.

Integrated One Health studies are essential for assessing the risks of leishmaniasis transmission. In Honduras, the most prevalent clinical presentation of leishmaniasis is the non-ulcerated cutaneous form caused by Leishmania infantum; however, research on its transmission dynamics remains limited. This study aimed to characterize the eco-epidemiology of leishmaniasis and identify potential zoonotic risk factors in the municipality of Ojos de Agua, Department of Comayagua, central Honduras, using a One Health approach. We collected sand flies using CDC light traps placed in intra- and peridom…

Mapping the network structure of self-reported everyday executive-functioning difficulties in secondary-school and university student samples from Honduras.

BACKGROUND: Executive functions support students' ability to regulate cognition, behavior, and emotion in response to academic demands, thereby providing a regulatory foundation for learning. However, little is known about how self-reported everyday executive-functioning difficulties are conditionally related, particularly in Central American educational settings. This study mapped the network structure of self-reported everyday executive-functioning difficulties in secondary-school and university student samples from Honduras. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 2,330 student…

Coincidence analysis: Identifying factors contributing to frontline health workers' confidence to face future pandemics across Honduras, Syria, and South Sudan.

Frontline health workers in humanitarian settings play a critical role in pandemic response, yet evidence on what sustains response readiness beyond the emergency is limited. This study examined factors associated with primary healthcare workers' sustained self-reported knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to future outbreaks or pandemics, with the configurational analysis focused on confidence. A retrospective cross-sectional survey was conducted among 118 health workers in Honduras, Syria, and South Sudan who received COVID-19 training. Coincidence analysis was applied with a set of …

Quality outcomes for pediatric colorectal surgery treated during short-term international medical service trips at a dedicated site in Honduras.

INTRODUCTION: Short-term international medical service trips (MSTs) provide specialized care in resource-constrained countries. There are limited data on immediate and long-term reported outcomes following specialty MST. We hypothesized that dedicated collaborative MST team and host institution produce outcomes and results comparable to those of high-income settings. Our primary aim was to analyze the long-term surgical and functional outcomes of our specialty-specific MSTs following five years of annual MST in Honduras. METHODS: We performed a single-institution retrospective analysis of 56 …

Short communication: high prevalence of drug resistance in HIV type 1-infected children born in Honduras and Belize 2001 to 2004.

Antiretroviral therapy has had a great impact on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV-1. However, development of drug resistance, which could be subsequently transmitted to the child, is a major concern. In Honduras and Belize the prevalence of drug resistance among HIV-1-infected children remains unknown. A total of 95 dried blood spot samples was obtained from HIV-1-infected, untreated children in Honduras and Belize born during 2001 to 2004, when preventive antiretroviral therapy was often suboptimal and consisted of monotherapy with nevirapine or zidovudine. Partial…
