The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) infests a wide array of host plants and is considered one of the most serious pests of maize in Europe. Recent studies suggest that individuals feeding on maize in Europe should be referred to O. nubilalis (sensu nov.), while those infesting dicots as Ostrinia scapulalis (sensu nov.). We test if the clear genetic distinctiveness among individuals of O. nubilalis living on maize vs. dicots is tracked by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). We used fragments of COI and COII genes of 32 individuals traditionally recognized as O. nubilalis collected on three host

In this paper we report an investigation of the utility of coprological analysis as an alternative technique to study parasite specificity whenever host sampling is problematic; acanthocephalans from marine mammals were used as a model. A total of 252 scats from the South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens, and rectal faeces from 43 franciscanas, Pontoporia blainvillei, from Buenos Aires Province, were examined for acanthocephalans. Specimens of two species, i.e. Corynosoma australe and C. cetaceum, were collected from both host species. In sea lions, 78 out of 145 (37.9%) females of C. aust

Cuterebra tenebrosa Coquillett bot flies were studied under natural and laboratory conditions in bushy-tailed wood rats and 7 other small mammal host species. Larvae demonstrated strong host specificity for Neotoma cinerea. Monthly trapping samples of wood rats in central Washington showed infection peaks of 65--70% in May and 30--40% in late summer. In laboratory-induced infections, wood rats supported 7 larvae without host mortality. Natural infections in trapped rats ranged from 1 to 6 per host. Larvae developed in lateral and dorsal warbles in laboratory and natural infections. Few wood ra…

Carboxylesterases (CarEs) are detoxification enzymes that play important roles in xenobiotic metabolism and host adaptation in the polyphagous spider mite Tetranychus truncatus. However, the specific carboxylesterase proteins involved in host plant detoxification in Tetranychus truncatus remain poorly characterized. In this study, we investigated the activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST), carboxylesterase (CarE), and cytochrome P450 (CYP450) in T. truncatus reared on three host plants-common bean, cucumber, and jujube. CarE activity was significantly higher in mites fed on jujube, whil

Emerging pandemics are often driven by viral spillover events. However, predicting them remains difficult due to the complex interplay between viral genetics, host adaptability, and ecological dynamics. While traditional models rely on ecological or host traits, recent advances using viral sequence data and machine learning approaches have improved prediction accuracy. However, these approaches often lack a unified framework applicable across diverse viral families and host kingdoms, and are further constrained by the limited availability of comprehensive datasets. Here, we introduce SPHAK, a

The association of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) with lower relapse rates following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in humans led us to analyse post HLA-identical BMT derived anti-host cytotoxic T cells (CTL) for their putative anti-leukemic activity. To establish whether graft-versus-host (GVH) and graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) activities are separate, CTL lines were generated at different time points post-BMT from three patients suffering from acute GVHD. These CTL lines, which exhibited lysis of host normal lymphocytes and neoplastic cells, were analysed at the clonal level. T

Rapid detection of viral pathogens is crucial for antiviral therapy. High-density 60-70-mer oligonucleotide microarrays have been explored for broad detection of many viruses. However, relatively low specificity and the complex analytical processes are the major limitations when pan-viral oligonucleotide microarrays are used to detect viral pathogens. In this study, genus-specific oligonucleotides were used as probes and modified sample preparations were carried out to improve the specificity and accuracy of the pan-viral oligonucleotide microarray. Genus-specific 63-mer oligonucleotide probes

INTRODUCTION: Literature indicates that racism, sexism, homophobia and HIV-related stigma have adverse impacts on health, well-being, and quality of life among HIV-positive women of African descent (African/Black diaspora). However, limited evidence exists on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma tailored for these women. This study systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized observational and quasi-experimental studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma experienced by this population.
METHODS: The Cochr

Host specificity of vectors is an important but understudied force shaping parasite evolution and the relationship between hosts and parasites. Low vector specificity may allow a vectored parasite to invade new host species, whereas high specificity of vectors may reduce the host range of the parasite and favor specialization. The 'generalist' and widely distributed avian skin mite Myialges caulotoon Speiser (Acari: Epidermoptidae) is unusual because females require an insect vector to complete their life cycle. Myialges caulotoon was previously reported from 2 lousefly (Diptera: Hippoboscidae…

Histochemical tests were done on newly excysted metacercariae and worms recovered from an abnormal host (rat) and the definitive host (dog) for some oxidoreductases, phosphatases and glycosidases. The results demonstrate that rat worms have enzymatic distribution and intensities more similar to those of metacercariae than to adult worms from dogs. Ultracytochemical examination of acid and alkaline phosphatase and Mg-ATPase activity was also carried out. Acid phosphatase activity occurred exceptionally in the excretory bladder and caeca of dog worms. No activity was observed in rat worms except

Naturally derived regulatory T cells (Tregs) may prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) while preserving graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) activity. However, clinical application of naturally derived regulatory T cells has been severely hampered by their scarce availability and nonselectivity. To overcome these limitations, we took alternative approaches to generate Ag-specific induced Tregs (iTregs) and tested their efficacy and selectivity in the prevention of GVHD in preclinical models of bone marrow transplantation. We selected HY as a target Ag because it is a naturally processed, ubiquitousl

BACKGROUND: Diatoms, a keystone phylum in Earth's ecosystems, are responsible for substantial oxygen production and the fixation of carbon dioxide in the form of carbohydrates that fuel global food webs. They host diverse prokaryotes, yet how diatoms preferentially recruit those with complementary metabolic traits remains unknown.
RESULTS: We discovered that diatoms exude a C6-sulfated α-1,3-mannan that serves as a selective carbon source for adapted Polaribacter. Its structure was resolved using NMR spectroscopy, chromatography, chemical synthesis, and enzymatic dissection. Biochemical, phys

Salmonella enterica remains a major threat to animal and human health because of its broad host range, increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and capacity to form biofilms. Biofilm formation enhances bacterial persistence in host tissues, farm environments, food-processing systems, and clinical reservoirs, while also contributing to their tolerance against antibiotics, disinfectants, and other stresses. However, biofilm capacity is not uniform across serovars and is influenced by host adaptation, niche specialization, and accessory genome content. This review synthesizes current knowledge

The human microbiome varies extensively between individuals. While there are numerous studies investigating the effects of inter-individual … tically diverse bacteria. By systematically comparing donor-specific responses, we demonstrate that host specificity is a key determinant of the host transcriptional response to microbial colonization. Importantly, we demonstrate that the effects of host specificity are not uniform, but instead are dependent on the colonizing microbe. Our findings underscore the c …

The use of bacteriophages for biological control of bacterial infections is a promising approach to combat antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Prediction of phage-bacteria interactions is key to identify sensitive bacterial strains to phage therapy. Since these interactions are governed by multiple biological mechanisms, it is not a simple task to predict the outcome of a phage infection, which varies even among strains from the same species. In this study, machine learning-based models capable of predicting the host range of phages from sequencing data were developed. Models were trained using

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most common causes of mortality globally with a steady rise in paediatric cases in the past decade. Laboratory methods of diagnosing TB and monitoring response to treatment have limitations. Current research focuses on interrogating host- and/or pathogen-specific biomarkers to address this problem.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature on host-specific biomarkers in TB to determine their value in diagnosis and treatment response in TB infected and HIV/TB co-infected children on anti-tuberculosis treatment.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: While no single host

The recent yellow fever virus (YFV) epidemic in Brazil in 2017 and Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic in 2015 serve to remind us of the importance of flaviviruses as emerging human pathogens. With the current global flavivirus threat, there is an urgent need for antivirals and vaccines to curb the spread of these viruses. However, the lack of suitable animal models limits the research questions that can be answered. A common trait of all flaviviruses studied thus far is their ability to antagonize interferon (IFN) signaling so as to enhance viral replication and dissemination. Previously, we reported
