[Seasonal variations of Fasciola hepatica infection in goats in the area of Haouz (Morocco)].

The prevalence and level of infection with Fasciola hepatica were assessed monthly over a 12-month period in goats slaughtered in the Haouz area, in correlation with the dynamics of Lymnaea truncatula populations. The infection rate was high in winter (23.8%) in January), and summer (17.1% in August), and relatively low in spring and at the beginning of autumn. The infected animals had a fluke burden range of 1-48; a mean of 13 was recorded in July. Lymnaeid snails were observed in their habitat throughout the year, but were more abundant during the hot months (July and August). Snails infecte

Elucidating the redox cycle of environmental phosphorus using ion chromatography.

Historically, it was assumed that reactive, inorganic phosphorus present in pristine environments was solely in the form of orthophosphate. … gical samples. These techniques have been used to detect phosphite and orthophosphate in geothermal hot springs. Hypophosphite, phosphite, and orthophosphate have been detected in synthetic schreibersite corrosion samples, and termite extract supernatant. Synthetic schreibersite corrosion samples were also analyzed for two poly-phosphorus compounds, hypophosp …

Genomic plasticity and antibody response of Bordetella bronchiseptica strain HT200, a natural variant from a thermal spring.

Classical Bordetella species are primarily isolated from animals and humans causing asymptomatic infection to lethal pneumonia. However, isolation of these bacteria from any extra-host environmental niche has not been reported so far. Here, we have characterized the genomic plasticity and antibody response of Bordetella bronchiseptica strain HT200, isolated from a thermal spring. Genomic ANI value and SNPs-based phylogenetic tree suggest a divergent evolution of strain HT200 from a human-adapted lineage of B. bronchiseptica. Growth and survivability assay showed strain HT200 retained viability

Clinical inquiries. Do nonmedicated topicals relieve childhood eczema?

Emollients are effective first-line treatment to decrease symptoms of eczema and reduce the need to use steroids in children. Tar preparations work, but compliance may be limited. Gamma-linoleic acid preparations, borage oil, and evening primrose oil show efficacy in small studies. MAS063DP cream (Atopiclair) is effective. Chamomile and bathing in acidic hot spring water may be effective, but these treatments have not been adequately evaluated. Wet wrap dressings may be effective but increase the risk of skin infections. Hamamelis distillate creams and massage with essential oils/aromatherapy

Fluoride contamination in and around selected geothermal sites in Odisha, Eastern India: assessment of ionic relations, fluoride exposure and remediation.

Fluoride contamination in groundwater is a major problem throughout the world as well as in India. High-fluoride content was reported in the hot springs of Atri and Tarbalo sites in Odisha, India, and residents of nearby villages showed the manifestations of fluorosis. Around 39% of the groundwater samples showed fluoride concentration > 1 mg/l, higher than the desirable limit specified by the WHO. The dominant chemical facies of groundwaters were ions of Ca-Mg-HCO3 and Ca-Na-Cl, which infers the lithological control over the hydrochemistry of this area. A strong correlation between fluoride a…

Moorella sulfitireducens sp. nov., a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium isolated from a terrestrial thermal spring.

In hydrothermal ecosystems, the dissolution of sulfur dioxide in water results in the formation of sulfite, which can be used in microbial metabolism. A limited number of thermophiles have been isolated using sulfite as an electron acceptor. From a terrestrial thermal spring, Sakhalin Island, Russia, we isolated a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium (strain SLA38T). Cells of strain SLA38T were spore-forming straight rods. Growth was observed at temperatures 45-65 °C (optimum at 60 °C) and pH 5.5-9.0 (optimum at pH 6.5-7.0). The novel isolate was capable of anaerobic respiration with sulfite, thio

Effects of stone spa (Ganban-yoku) on psychological states.

This uncontrolled intervention study explored the effects of stone spa use on the psychological states of women. Sixty-eight female volunteers (mean age 37.5 years (standard deviation 14.8)) recruited at a women-only stone spa facility participated in the study. They completed the short-form Profile of Moods States (POMS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and after stone spa use in order to determine changes in mood and anxiety states. Six factors relating to mood were measured using the POMS: Tension-Anxiety, Depression-Dejection, Anger-Hostility, Vigor, Fatigue, and Confusi

Spring fever: early spring predicts Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) activity in northwestern California.

In the far western United States, the bacterial agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, is primarily transmitted to humans by the nymphal stage of the western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus. Predicting nymphal tick abundance would benefit public health but is complicated by the tick's complex multi-year life cycle and data limitations. To address this, we used readily available climate data, a long-term dataset from northwestern California, and time lags based on the tick's life cycle. Our model showed that warmer early spring temperatures during non-drought conditions the

[Thermophilic microbial metal reduction].

Thermophilic microorganisms can reduce Fe(III), Mn(IV), Cr(VI), U(VI), Tc(VII), Co(III), Mo(VI), Au(I, III), and Hg(II). Ferric iron and Mn(IV) can be used as electron acceptors during growth; the physiological role of the reduction of the other metals is unclear. The process of microbial dissimilatory reduction of Fe(III) is the most thoroughly studied. Iron-reducing prokaryotes have been found in virtually all of the recognized types of terrestrial ecosystems, from hot continental springs to goethermally heated subsurface sediments. Thermophilic iron reducers do not belong to a phylogenetica

Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolates from cooling towers in Japan form a distinct genetic cluster.

Thirty-one epidemiologically unrelated Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 isolates (10 from cooling towers, 10 from public spas and/or hot spring baths, and 11 from patients) were analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and sequence-based typing (SBT) using 6 loci, flaA, pilE, asd, mip, mompS, and proA. The results of PFGE and SBT analysis indicated that all 10 isolates from cooling towers clustered into a unique type, which was distinct from strains of other environmental sources.

Long-term cognitive and pulmonary functions following a lower versus a higher oxygenation target in the HOT-ICU and HOT-COVID trials: A protocol update.

BACKGROUND: The Handling Oxygenation Targets in the Intensive Care Unit (HOT-ICU) trial was a multicentre, randomised, parallel-group trial of a lower oxygenation target (arterial partial pressure of oxygen [PaO2 ] = 8 kPa) versus a higher oxygenation target (PaO2  = 12 kPa) in adult ICU patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure; the Handling Oxygenation Targets in coronavirus disease 2019 (HOT-COVID) tested the same oxygenation targets in patients with confirmed COVID-19. In this study, we aim to evaluate the long-term effects of these oxygenation targets on cognitive and pulmonary f

Spatial characteristics of net methylmercury production hot spots in peatlands.

Many wetlands are sources of methylmercury (MeHg) to surface waters, yet little information exists about the distribution of MeHg within wetlands. Total mercury (THg) and MeHg in peat pore waters were studied in four peatlands in spring, summer, and fall 2005. Marked spatial variability in the distribution of MeHg, and %MeHg as a proxy for net MeHg production, was observed, with highest values occurring in discrete zones. We denote these zones "MeHg hot spots", defined as an area where the pore water %MeHg exceeded the 90th percentile of the data set (n=463) or >22% of THg as MeHg. MeHg hot sp

Novel thermophilic hydrolytic bacterium Rarispira pelagica gen. nov., sp. nov., reclassification of Spirochaeta thermophila as Winmispira thermophila gen. nov., comb. nov., and proposal of Winmispiraceae fam. nov. and Winmispirales ord. nov. in the class Spirochaetia.

A novel anaerobic moderately thermophilic bacterium, strain 38H-spT, was isolated from a hot spring located 12 m deep of the Kunashir Island shore. Gram-stain negative cells were non-sporeforming, motile, thin helices with regular coiling, occasionally forming bundles of cells. The strain grew at 30-60 °C and pH range of 5.5-8.4 with an optimum at 55 °C and pH 6.6-7.0. Strain 38H-spT required 0.5-5.5% NaCl (1.5% is an optimum) for growth. It was a chemoorganoheterotroph, growing on carbohydrates, including polymers (starch, pullulan, xylan, cellulose, arabinoxylan, xanthan gum, mannan, galacto

Diel mercury-concentration variations in streams affected by mining and geothermal discharge.

Diel variations of concentrations of unfiltered and filtered total Hg and filtered methyl Hg were documented during 24-h sampling episodes in water from Silver Creek, which drains a historical gold-mining district near Helena, Montana, and the Madison River, which drains the geothermal system of Yellowstone National Park. The concentrations of filtered methyl Hg had relatively large diel variations (increases of 68 and 93% from morning minima) in both streams. Unfiltered and filtered (0.1-microm filtration) total Hg in Silver Creek had diel concentration increases of 24% and 7%, respectively.

Legionnaires' disease diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage.

A 51-year-old woman who had been on steroid therapy for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed a high fever 3 days after visiting a hot spring resort. Chest X-ray films revealed an interstitial, pneumonia-like shadow in the left lung field, which increased rapidly with a worsening of her symptoms. She died of multiple organ failure one week after the onset of the pneumonia. Although the serum antibody titer was negative, Legionella pneumophila was recovered from her bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. BAL seems to be a useful method to diagnose Legionnaires' disease.

Fluoride levels in water sources inside the crater of Furnas volcano: Potential health implications for local communities and tourists.

Fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral, is widely recognized for its dual role in human health. At optimal concentrations, it provides dental benefits; however, excessive fluoride can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis. Volcanic regions are known for their geothermal water sources that contain elevated levels of fluoride, raising concerns about potential health impacts on local populations. This study focuses on the Furnas volcano region at the Island of São Miguel, Azores, where natural springs are promoted for their therapeutic and medicinal properties. However, these springs also raise
