Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is characterized by pathologic ventriculomegaly with normal opening pressures on lumbar puncture. It commonly presents with a triad of gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary bladder detrusor dysfunction. Its pathogenesis is complex but is thought to arise in the setting of imbalanced cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) secretion and absorption. Given that intracranial pressure often remains normal in the setting of NPH, visual symptoms are quite uncommon. Here we present a case of a 70-year-old female with a subacute history of visual aberration described

Normal-pressure hydrocephalus is a clinical syndrome that mainly targets the elderly population. It features dementia, impaired walking, and the malfunction of sphincters. The rapid identification and large-scale screening of patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) are of great significance as surgical interventions can greatly improve or even reverse the symptoms. This review aims to summarize the traditional parameters used to diagnose NPH and the emerging progression in neuroimaging of the disease, hoping to provide an up-to-date overall perspective and summarize the possible dire

BACKGROUND: Normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is characterized by gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, with or without urinary incontinence, enlarged ventricles with or without cerebral atrophy and normal cerebrospinal fluid pressure.
METHODS: We report two sisters with NPH who lived together their entire lives and whose natural history might provide insights into genetic and environmental mechanisms underlying this disorder. Both patients were in their early seventies, single, had similar daily habits and hypertension. No other family members had NPH.
RESULTS: They both underwent shunt

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, hyponatraemia was frequently found in patients with hydrocephalus. We conducted this study to determine the prevalence and risk factors for hyponatraemia in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with NPH who were admitted to China Medical University Hospital between 1998 and 2006. Hyponatraemia was defined as a plasma sodium concentration < 135 mEq/l on admission. Possible risk factors between patients with and without hyponatraemia were analysed using Student's t-test or chi2 test. The associatio

The syndrome of normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, especially as many patients do not display the classical clinical and neuroimaging patterns of NPH, thus questioning the usefulness of a shunt. Gait impairment remains the cardinal symptom, while mental deterioration may be subtle and even unrecognized. NPH is rarely the cause of severe dementia, and substantial improvement in NPH-related mental deterioration is limited to 30-40% of shunted patients. Many ancillary investigations have been described that can increase the probability of selecting

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus is a disease that most frequently concerns subjects of an advanced age. It is not easy to establish a definitive diagnosis, and the practitioner frequently encounters decision-making problems regarding the following question: should a shunt be performed, or not? Opinions remain contradictory, even though the available scientific data is increasingly precise. The aim of this review is to analyze the physiopathogenic, clinical, paraclinical and therapeutic data associated with this type of hydrocephalus.

Although the syndrome of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) was described in the adult as early as 1964, it has only recently been recognized in the child. In this preliminary report, eight myelomeningocele patients with presumed NPH were evaluated before and after ventricular shunting procedures. Cranial computed tomography and serial psychological testing have proved to be particularly valuable both in the pre-operative and post-operative assessment of these patients and have the distinct advantage of being simple, non-invasive diagnostic measures. Continuous intra-ventricular pressure moni

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) represents a nosographic entity characterized by phenotypic variability. In this context, the need arises to differentiate iNPH from neurological conditions characterized by impairment in mobility and cognition, including atypical and secondary parkinsonism, with which it shares several common aspects. In this review we will discuss clinical evidence supporting different iNPH clinical phenotypes mimicking Parkinson's disease and secondary/atypical parkinsonism, indicating iNPH as a neurological condition that should be considered by movement diso

This review summarises the current knowledge of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), which is considered to be a reversible cause of dementia. Early identification is important to select patients for surgical treatment with ventricular shunting. The symptoms of NPH are gait disturbance, cognitive dysfunction and urinary incontinence. NPH is diagnosed by a combination of the clinical presentation and neuroimaging and preferably supported by cerebrospinal fluid tests. The pathophysiology is not well described and a significant overlap with degenerative and small vessel brain diseases exist, maki

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) accounts for one of the few known forms of reversible dementia. Varied aetiology and clinical presentation contribute to difficulties with early or differential diagnoses, and delayed surgical treatment may be less efficacious. Clinical neuropsychology provides a means of determining a cognitive profile for NPH, assisting in differential diagnosis, tracking the disorder's progression and assessing the efficacy of treatment. This article will review possible applications of clinical neuropsychology and propose a clinical assessment protocol for NPH.

A cachectic 55-year-old man presented with ataxia and metabolic instability. On physical examination, he had prominent myoedema in all muscle groups. In addition, a CT scan and lumbar puncture showed extensive nonobstructive hydrocephalus. Further clinical evaluation revealed elevated creatine phosphokinase and liver enzyme levels, although the patient was euthyroid. The patient improved neurologically and metabolically with supportive therapy but the myoedema persisted. Previous cases have emphasized that myoedema is a localized, electrically silent, benign myopathic disorder of unknown cause

Continuous lumbar cerebrospinal fluid pressure measurement was made in 19 cases of aged patients suspected of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. Based on the pressure study, they were divided into high pressure group (H group) and normal pressure group (N group). H group was composed of 11 cases and N group of 8 cases. Baseline pressures in H group and N group were 16.3 +/- 3.0 mmHg, 9.6 +/- 1.7 mmHg, respectively and the difference was statistically significant. Pulse pressure was high in H group and frequency of pressure waves was also significantly high in H group. There were no sign

Ten patients with dementia due to normal-pressure hydrocephalus were evaluated prospectively according to a planned, longitudinal protocol for 4 to 12 months. Information recorded at each visit included clinical history, medical and neurological examination, psychometric scoring by Mini-Mental Status Questionnaire, measurement of ventricular size and local cerebral blood flow, and partition coefficients (local lambda changes) (1 lambda) by xenon contrast computerized tomography scanning. Cerebrospinal fluid shunting was carried out in eight cases. Serial evaluations were repeated at intervals

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a potentially reversible neurological disorder characterized by the triad of gait disturbance, cognitive decline, and urinary dysfunction in association with ventriculomegaly and normal or mildly elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure. Although first described by Hakim in 1957, the condition remains underdiagnosed, partly because its clinical manifestations are common in the elderly population and are often attributed to more prevalent age-related conditions. The pathophysiology of iNPH is complex and incompletely understood, involving al
