Effects of hypertonic saline-dextran solution on regional blood flow and thrombogenicity in PTFE grafts in the vena cava of the rabbit.

OBJECTIVES: to study the effects of hypervolaemic haemodilution with hypertonic saline-dextran solution (HSD) on regional blood flow and thrombogenicity of small diameter polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts. DESIGN: blood flow in rabbit aorta, vena cava and femoral, renal and ear arteries was determined in five groups: controls, isovolaemic haemodilution with dextran-70 (10 ml/kg body weight (b.w. )), hypervolaemic haemodilution (10 ml/kg b.w.) with either dextran-70, 7.5% NaCl or a combination of dextran and NaCl (HSD). In a second series PTFE grafts were inserted into the vena cava of rab

Effect of hypertonic saline solution and dextran on ventricular blood flow and heart-lung interaction after hemorrhagic shock.

BACKGROUND: Hypertonic saline solutions may have beneficial hemodynamic effects in the resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock. The effects on cardiac function and potential interaction with lung function are controversial and served as the basis for this study. METHODS: Domestic swine were resuscitated from hemorrhagic shock with equivalent sodium loads of lactated Ringer's solution (LR) or 7.5% NaCl plus 10% dextran (HSD). Hemodynamic data were obtained at baseline, shock, and after resuscitation. Right ventricular ejection fraction and left ventricular change in pressure with respect to time (d

Effect of continuous infusion of hypertonic saline solution on survival of patients with brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to determine the effects of continuous infusion of hypertonic saline solutions on outcomes of patients with brain injury. METHODS: Preferred Reported Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed. We searched the MEDLINE and COCHRANE clinical trials register (through December 2021) and reference lists of articles. We included all clinical trials conducted in brain-injured patients hospitalized in intensive care units evaluating continuous infusion of hypertonic saline solution (osmolarity above 308 mOsm/L). Two reviewers extracted data tha

No increase in small-solute transport in peritoneal dialysis patients treated without hypertonic glucose for fifty-four months.

BACKGROUND: Glucose is widely used as an osmotic agent in peritoneal dialysis (PD), but exerts untoward effects on the peritoneum. The potential protective effect of a reduced exposure to hypertonic glucose has never been investigated. METHODS: The cohort of PD patients attending our center which tackled the challenge of a restricted use of hypertonic glucose solutions has been prospectively followed since 1992. Small-solute transport was assessed using an equivalent of the glucose peritoneal equilibration test after 6 months, and then every year. Study was stopped on July 1st, 2008, before u

[Effect of the combined hypertonic colloidal solution HyperHeas on hemodynamic and oxygen transport parameters, intracranial pressure, and cerebral oxygenation].

The paper gives the results of a clinical study of the effect of the new combined hypertonic colloidal and hypertonic solution HyperHaes (Frezenius-Cabi) on the parameters of systemic hemodynamics (invasive evaluation by means of a Swan-Ganz catheter), systemic oxygen transport, intracranial pressure (ICP) (lumbar spinal fluid pressure), and cerebral oximetry (INVOS 5100) in neurosurgical patients. The paradoxical effect was found as acute blood pressure lowering and elevated ICP on the beginning of solution infusion (the vasodilator effect of a distinctly hyperosmolar agent). In all other res

Hemostatic effect of endoscopic local injection with hypertonic saline-epinephrine solution and pure ethanol for digestive tract bleeding.

An uncontrolled study for the assessment of the hemostatic effects of endoscopically injected hypertonic saline-epinephrine (HS-E) solution and pure ethanol (PE) was carried out in 67 patients with nonvariceal gastrointestinal bleeding. The HS-E group included duodenal ulcer (18), gastric ulcer (9), gastric cancer (2), polyp (2), marginal ulcer (1), and esophageal cancer (1). Bleeding was active in 15 (pulsating, 3; oozing, 12). The hemostatic effect was permanent in 29 cases (87.9%) but failed in four cases (12.1%). The PE group consisted of 34 patients with duodenal ulcer (25), gastric ulcer

Efficacy and safety of hypertonic saline solutions fluid resuscitation on hypovolemic shock: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Fluid resuscitation is a fundamental intervention in patients with hypovolemic shock resulting from trauma. Appropriate fluid resuscitation in trauma patients could reduce organ failure, until blood components are available, and hemorrhage is controlled. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis assessing the effect of hypertonic saline/dextran or hypertonic saline for fluid resuscitation on patient outcomes restricted to adults with hypovolemic shock. METHODS: We conducted a search of electronic information sources, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane libr

High-dose furosemide and small-volume hypertonic saline solution infusion for the treatment of leg edema in advanced cancer patients.

Peripheral edema is a common feature in populations with advanced cancer, although it is seldom recognized. Diuretics are commonly employed and may show some benefit, but there are insufficient clinical trial data to draw useful conclusions about their clinical use. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of high-dose furosemide and small-volume hypertonic saline solution infusion in reducing leg edema in patients with advanced cancer treated unsuccessfully with diuretics. A prospective study was performed in a consecutive sample of 24 patients admitted

Oral treatment of human taeniasis by ethereal extract of male-fern (aspidium) preceded by the administration of hypertonic solution of magnesium sulphate.

29 Patients of ages varying from 12 to 60 years were treated orally with doses of 0.07 g/kg body weight of ethereal extract of male-fern, preceded by the administration of hypertonic solution of magnesium sulphate (15 g in 200 ml of water). All of them were previously treated with other anthelminthics without success. 25 of the patients obtained total cure. One woman expelled 14 scoleces of T. solium. The species determination for the 29 cases of Taeniasis revealed 3 cases of T. solium (10.3%) and 26 cases of T. saginata (89.7%).

Hypertonic saline solution evokes cardiovascular recovery in hemorrhagic rats dependent on GABA A and β-adrenergic transmission in the subfornical organ.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported the use of a hypertonic saline solution (HSS) for the treatment of hypotensive hemorrhage (HH). Despite the established role of central mechanisms in the cardiovascular recovery induced by HSS during HH, the involvement of the Subfornical Organ (SFO) in these responses remains to be elucidated. The present study evaluated the role of SFO and adrenergic neurotransmission in the nucleus in the cardiovascular responses to HSS infusion in hemorrhagic rats. METHODS: Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and aortic vascular resistance (AVR) were recorded i

Wet table salt and its saturated hypertonic solution for treating retinoic acid resistant plane viral warts on face.

Plane viral warts on the face can be difficult to treat at times. Various treatment approaches for facial viral warts have had variable degrees of effectiveness. In contrast, the majority of existing treatments are more costly, painful, and difficult to manage. In approximately 15.6% of instances, retinoic acid (0.05%) is also ineffective. It is very difficult to cure warts on the face at a young age. In pyogenic granuloma, table salt (NaCl) is useful as a sclerosing agent, and its hypertonic solution (15%) is effective in prolabial mucoceles. The aim of treating viral warts is to necrose infe

Hypertonic saline solution reduces mesenteric microcirculatory dysfunctions and bacterial translocation in a rat model of strangulated small bowel obstruction.

We examined the effects of hypertonic saline (HS) on inflammatory, metabolic variables, and bacterial translocation (BT) in rats submitted to intestinal obstruction and ischemia (IO). Male Wistar rats were submitted to IO and treated, 2 h thereafter, with lactated Ringer's (LR) (4 mL/kg per 5 min, i.v.) or HS (7.5% NaCl, 4 mL/kg per 5 min, i.v.). Twenty-four hours after IO, rats were also submitted to enterectomy/enteroanastomosis to resection of necrotized small bowel. Leukocyte-endothelial interactions were investigated by intravital microscopy and the expression of P-selectin and intercellu

Dynamics of Ca2+i and pHi in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells after Ca2+-mobilizing agonists or exposure to hypertonic solution.

Intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) and intracellular pH (pHi) were monitored in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells using Fura-2 or 2',7',-bis-(2-carboxyethyl)-5,6-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF), or both probes in combination. An increase in [Ca2+]i induced by thrombin or bradykinin, agonists known to elicit transient cell shrinkage in these cells, evoked a transient intracellular acidification, followed by an alkalinization. The latter was due to activation of a Na+/H+ exchanger and was inhibited under conditions preventing agonist-induced cell shrinkage without preventing the increase in
