The role of the pituitary gland in the regulation of skeletal growth and plasma insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and IGF-II concentrations in the late gestation sheep fetus has been studied. This investigation was undertaken to determine the role of pituitary function and, in particular, the possible influence of growth hormone (GH) on hepatic low density lipoprotein (LDL)-receptor expression in response to dietary cholesterol. From 1963 to 1990 78 successive patients with pituitary-dependent cortisol hypersecretion were submitted to transsphenoidal surgery. In 57 patients, a selective adenomectomy was performed. Using hypophysectomized rats, it has been shown that DNA polymerase-beta activity in the adrenal gland and testis is largely influenced by pituitary trophic hormones. Sucrose gradient centrifugation of thyroid extracts revealed three peaks of DNA polymerase-beta activity sedimenting at 3.3S, 7.3S and 12S.
