The results of a genomewide scan for genes conferring susceptibility to anxiety disorders in the Icelandic population are described. A comparative study was made of thyroid function in samples of 'well' subjects, from separate geographical areas with dissimilar dietary iodine levels. In the area with the higher iodine level, Iceland, the prevalence of positive thyroid antibody tests and serum thyrotrophin levels were lower, while the capacity of the thyroid to respond to exogenous thyrotrophin was higher than in NE Scotland, an area with lower iodine levels. BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is most common in populations of Northern European ancestry where the F508del variant predominates. In 2020, Iceland became a member of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Patient Registry, and we launched an epidemiological study of CF in Iceland. The study aimed to determine the prevalence and the genetic variants present in the country. AIMS: To evaluate the validity of recorded chronic disease diagnoses in Icelandic healthcare registries.
METHODS: Eight different chronic diseases from multiple sub-specialties of medicine were validated with respect to accuracy, but not to timeliness. For each disease, 30 patients with a recorded diagnosis and 30 patients without the same diagnosis were randomly selected from >80,000 participants in the iStopMM trial, which includes 54% of the Icelandic population born before 1976. During late summer in 1995 to 1997, repeated outbreaks of maculopapular skin eruptions were noted on the legs of children after wading in the pond in the Family Park in Laugardalur, Reykjavík, Iceland. Clinical symptoms developing on the legs resembled those of cercarial dermatitis. An examination of Lymnaea peregra snails from this pond and from the adjacent Lake Tjornin resulted in detection of previously undescribed schistosome cercariae. This is the first report of schistosomes in Iceland and also the most northern occurrence of these parasites in Europe.
