[A clinical study of generalized amnesia].

Six cases of generalized amnesia were reported. Generalized amnesia caused by phenomena of genuinely psychogenic origin is a rare psychological disorder and spontaneous recovery from amnesia in a comparatively short period of time is one of the characteristics of this disorder. Three of the cases in this report developed amnesia which was prolonged in comparison with previously reported cases. A comparison between these six cases and previously reported cases of amnesia elucidated the general characteristics of this disorder, differential diagnosis from other disorders, the development of a ne

A-B status and sex stereotyping among psychotherapists and patients. Toward a model for maximizing therapeutic potential.

Previous studies indicate that mental health professionals, when evaluating the mental health of males and females, sex role stereotype to the disparagement of females. Some feminists have further assumed that male therapists in particular discourage self-actualization of females, and have argued that female patients should be seen by female therapists only. This study examined the major hypothesis that among both male and female therapists and among both male and female patients, there may be identifiable kinds of therapists and patients who sex role stereotype more than others. A total of 24

[A comparison of the psychosocial status of 125 abortion patients before and after the termination of pregnancy].

We described in a former study (Volume 3, 1982) the cases of 228 abortion patients, their psychosocial data and the conflicts from which the unwanted pregnancies, which are interrupted, arise. A follow-up study took place 18 to 24 months after the abortion. The crucial point of the follow-up investigation was the development of the relationship, newly wanted or unwanted pregnancies, the practice of contraception, the psychological coming to terms with the abortion as well as the re-evaluation of the conflict situations described in the earlier study. With these results we tried to understand t

Extending the Dark Side of Identity Processes With Identity Distress.

INTRODUCTION: Latent profile analysis of the dimensions of identity scale (DIDS) provides a person-centered configuration of adaptive (commitment, identification with commitment; exploration in breadth and in depth) and maladaptive (ruminative exploration) identity processes. The DIDS focuses on the future domain in the present. In this study DIDS profile analysis was extended to include the Identity Distress Scale (IDS), an affective index of uncertainty and difficulties with identity issues in general content areas relevant to young adults and its impact on adjustment. Identity distress is c

Sex biases in mental health scales: do women tend to report less serious symptoms and confide more than men?

Women report more symptoms than men in mental health surveys. The evidence shows that psychometric biases cannot explain this significant difference. This study attempts to explore other factors that could bias the results--for example, that women are likely to report less serious symptoms than men or are less apprehensive in reporting symptoms because they have a higher tendency to report symptoms than men. A random sample of 213 women and 222 men, all married and between the age of 25 and 40, were interviewed at home in two districts of Montreal (Canada) and given the Health Opinion Survey (

Transsexualism and physical deformity.

This is the first published case study of a transsexual male with a rare orthopedic condition whose transsexualism was directly related to his severe orthopedic disability. In 1976, the patient, a 28-year-old single Caucasian male with a college education, was diagnosed as having progressive pseudorheumatoid arthrotropy of children (a very rare orthopedic disorder which also affected his sister). At this writing, he is 4 feet 9 inches tall and has multiple skeletal deformities, including twisted and gnarled joints; he wears braces on both legs, has had total hip replacements, is barrel chested

Personal constructs among depressed patients.

The Kelly Role Construct Repertory Test (rep grid) was administered to 19 depressed patients, 19 psychiatric controls, and 19 normal controls. Tests were analyzed to produce measures of cognitive complexity, self-ideal congruency, negative self-construing, identification (self-other distances), and consistency of within-factor self-attribution. In comparison to the two control groups, three characteristics of depressed patients emerged: a) the well known tendency to construe oneself negatively occurred but not in terms of a greater number of factors with consistent negative self-description; i

The resolution of a transsexual wish in a five-year-old boy.

The brief truncated psychoanalytic treatment of a transsexual boy described in this paper demonstrates the development of transference reactions and their subsequent resolution. The analytic situation allowed this young patient to live out again his relationship with his parents in his relationship with the analyst, to recover from wishing to be a member of the female sex, and to work through his conflicted symbiosis with his mother. Carlos became able to individuate and disidentify from her into a separate male child, in order to be able to identify with, and accept, his own biological and ps

Group memberships and post-traumatic growth: How we connect determines how we recover.

This paper examines key processes from the social identity model of traumatic identity change in the context of the aftermath of a natural disaster. It focuses on the roles of (i) group membership gain, (ii) group membership continuity, (iii) social identity revitalisation, and (iv) the severity of natural disaster exposure on post-traumatic growth (PTG) and post-traumatic stress (PTS). PARTICIPANTS: (N = 410, Mage = 53.24 years) comprised adult survivors of the Australian 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires, recruited to complete an online survey via geo-targeted Facebook advertisements. RESULTS:

The development of female transsexualism.

Characteristics by which to classify a woman as authentically transsexual are offered from earlier investigations and supplemented by findings from recent work with this type of patient. Developmental issues are discussed and six psychodynamic accompaniments listed. A case demonstrates how to identify the true female transsexual and how to understand her psychological processes.

Gender differences in the relationship between hostility and the type A behavior pattern.

A group of 97 male and 111 female undergraduates completed the Jenkins Activity Survey, the Framingham Type A Scale, the Adjective Checklist Type A Scale, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. A factor analysis revealed three dimensions: Anger-Emotionality, Anger-Aggression, and Residual Pattern A. All Type A measures loaded highly on the Type A factor, with the Jenkins Activity Survey loading the highest. The Framingham Type A Scale was related to Anger-Emotionality, the Adjective Checklist Type A Scale was related to Anger-Aggression, and the

Sex-role behavior change: intrasubject studies of boyhood gender disturbance.

Sex-role behaviors were modified in a seven-year-old boy who had been evaluated by an independent psychiatrist as manifesting cross-gender identification. The child's developmental history paralleled the retrospective reports of adult transsexuals. In Experiment 1, the boy was treated in the clinic by a nonprofessional female "therapist" who reinforced "masculine" sex-typed play behaviors and extinguished "feminine" behaviors. The treatment effects generalized to the boy's play with a different set of toys in the presence of male and female strangers, but did not generalize to the boy's play i

Primitive defenses: cognitive aspects and therapeutic handling.

In this paper the primitive defenses first described by Melanie Klein under the label of "schizoid mechanisms" are examined. The defenses considered are splitting the pathological uses of identification and projective identification, and the psychotic forms of denial. This examination is twofold: (1) the cognitive aspects of these defenses as described in terms of concepts developed by Jean Piaget; (2) concrete examples of the operation of these defenses during the treatment of schizophrenic patients are given and the effects of interventions based on the cognitive analysis are described. It i

Experiences of Identity-Related Vigilance in Surgical Trainees: A Qualitative Study.

IMPORTANCE: Experiences with identity-related mistreatment are a critical concern in surgical residency training. Prior research demonstrates those who experience identity-related mistreatment or scrutiny can experience subsequent vigilance for additional encounters with associated stress. It is unknown whether surgical trainees who experience identity-related mistreatment or scrutiny also experience identity-related vigilance. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether identity-related vigilance impacts surgical trainees in the learning environment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative

Racism, Racial Resilience, and African American Youth Development: Person-Centered Analysis as a Tool to Promote Equity and Justice.

Racism constitutes a significant risk to the healthy development of African American youth. Fortunately, however, not all youth who experience racism evidence negative developmental outcomes. In this chapter, we examine person-centered analysis (PCA)-a quantitative technique that investigates how variables combine across individuals-as a useful tool for elucidating racial and ethnic protective processes that mitigate the negative impact of racism. We review recent studies employing PCA in examinations of racial identity, racial socialization, and other race-related experiences, as well as how

Collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance: meta-analyses of their relationships, and test of a mediation model.

The authors examined relationships among collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance. Meta-analytic results (based on 6,128 groups, 31,019 individuals, 118 correlations adjusted for dependence, and 96 studies) reveal that collective efficacy was significantly related to group performance (.35). In the proposed nested 2-level model, collective efficacy assessment (aggregation and group discussion) was tested as the 1st-level moderator. It showed significantly different average correlations with group performance (.32 vs. .45), but the group discussion assessment was homogeneous, w

Words that touch.

In this paper the author examines her own use of language as a psychoanalyst and asks: what is the best way to help analyse and to find the words to express not only what they are thinking but also what they are feeling and experiencing? In common with other psychoanalysts, the author has observed that each of us simultaneously utilises both advanced psychic mechanisms that are accessible to symbolism and more archaic ones, which are less so. However, she draws a distinction between people who are able to tolerate the perception of their own heterogeneity, even if it is sometimes a source of s

The "noble" sports fan: the relationships between team identification, self-esteem, and aggression.

Authors have disagreed on whether sports spectating has positive or negative consequences for individuals and society. Based on Smith's 1988 discussion of "the noble sports fan," the current research tested the prediction that identification with a sports team would be positively related to collective or group's self-esteem and not related to trait scores of aggression. The hypothesis was confirmed. Discussion centers on patterns of the observed correlations.
