A Note on the Horizontal-Vertical Illusion - A Reply to Wade (2014).

Like many others before him, Nicholas Wade, in a recent publication in this journal, did not provide the correct title of Adolf Fick's dissertation, approved by the University at Marburg, Germany, in 1851, and Wade also wrongly attributed now famous illusion figures, meant to illustrate the so-called horizontal-vertical illusion (the +, the L, and the inverted T), to this author. After having corrected these errors, I briefly relate Fick's work to modern work in the field and note that it has been widely neglected.

Putting pain out of mind with an 'out of body' illusion.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a growing societal concern that warrants scientific investigation, especially given the ineffectiveness of many treatments. Given evidence that pain experience relies on multisensory integration, there is interest in using body ownership illusions for reducing acute pain. AIM: In the present study, we investigate whether patients' experience of chronic pain could be reduced by full body illusions (FBIs) that cause participants to dissociate from their own body. METHODS: Participants with chronic pain (including sciatica, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, muscular pain

Modelling the Mach bands illusion by means of a diffusion model.

First, we criticize the validity of the principle of lateral inhibition. Second, on the basis of illusory phenomena and stabilized retinal images, we point out that the retina does not code the absolute luminance; the retina forwards a relative luminance sketch towards higher levels of the visual system. However, at the level of conscious processing the perceptual counterpart of absolute luminance, brightness, is available. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that a reconstruction process is carried out by the visual system, which recovers the inner representation that corresponds to the ret

Impairment of the rubber hand illusion in focal hand dystonia.

Patients with dystonia display a number of disturbances in the cognitive processing of movements, such as movement simulation and prediction, but whether these deficits point to a deeper rooted disturbance of perceptual bodily representations remains unknown. A useful way to investigate the sense of body ownership is the rubber hand paradigm, in which an illusion of ownership is established by synchronous stroking of the participants' real unseen hand and a visible fake hand, whereas similar asynchronous stroking does not bring about the illusion. This paradigm allows testing of both the subje

The importance of stimulus parameters for the experience of the thermal grill illusion.

AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the quality of the thermal grill illusion (TGI) and the importance of stimulus parameters (distance between, and number of stimulation bars). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-one different stimuli were applied to a group of 19 healthy subjects on the glabrous skin over the palm and fingers. RESULTS: The TGI was found to be painful (19.42% on the palm; 17.98% on the fingers), mechanical (25.24% on the palm; 5.62% on the fingers), emotional (13.59% on the palm; 14.61% on the fingers) or unusual (42.72% on the palm; 61.8% on the fingers) sensations. Path perception and Filehne illusion compared: model and data.

Pursuit eye movements introduce retinal motion that complicates the recovery of self-motion from retinal flow. An extra-retinal, eye-velocity signal could be used to aid estimation of the observer's path, perhaps by converting retino-centric into head-centric motion. This conversion is apparently not precise because we often misperceive head-centric object velocity: in the Filehne illusion, for example, a stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction to the eye movement. Similar errors should be expected when extra-retinal, eye-velocity signals are used in self-motion tasks. Howe

Illusion decrement as a function of duration of inspection and figure type.

Illusion decrement for the Müller-Lyer and Horizontal-Vertical illusions was examined. The experiment consisted of an initial adjustment of an illusion followed by 20 test trials, each with an intervening 60-sec. intertrial interval during which a comparator line and a standard line set to equality were visually inspected for 0, 20, 40, or 60 sec. After each intertrial interval the length of the comparator line was reset by the experimenter to either 0 or 90 cm, and subjects then adjusted its length to perceived equality with the standard line (42 cm). Illusion decrement was inversely related

Knee dislocation. An illusive cause of critical arterial occlusion.

Popliteal artery injury is a hazardous and often subtle complication of traumatic knee dislocation. Review of the literature in which series of knee dislocations were reported has revealed a 28% incidence of thrombosis or rupture of this critical vessel. Fifty-seven percent of these patients required leg amputation. The most frequent cause of limb loss has been absence or delay of direct surgical repair of the associated popliteal artery injury. This report describes a management plan that is intended to minimize the likleihood of future disabling leg amputations following knee dislocation.

Manipulating Physical Characteristics of Kanizsa and Ebbinghaus Illusions: Exploring Perceptual Links to Autistic Traits.

We explored how systematic manipulation of the physical characteristics of the Kanizsa and Ebbinghaus illusions influences perceptual outcomes in the general population. Additionally, we investigated whether these effects on illusion processing are influenced by individual differences in autistic traits. Eighty-five adults aged 18 to 35 years completed the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and participated in two illusion tasks in which the size, spacing, and direction of inducing elements were systematically manipulated. In addition to accuracy analysis, performance was assessed using the Balance

Visual Hallucinations and Illusions as Missed Diagnostic Clues in Autoimmune Disease: A Patient Perspective.

Non-psychotic visual hallucinations and illusions (referred to here as NVHIs), such as visual snow, can be indicators of serious underlying pathologies, including Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases. In this Patient Perspective article, I recount some of the impacts of NVHIs, and their attribution/misattribution, on my autoimmune diagnostic journeys. I then draw on these experiences, and the literature, to suggest improvements to policies and practice. It is hoped that these types of changes could contribute to NVHI-related diagnostic opportunities being less often missed.

Synergistic Illusions: Enhancing Perceptual Effects of Pseudo-Attraction Force by Kinesthetic Illusory Hand Movement.

We investigated the enhancement of the perceived force strength in force feedback devices by combining the pulling illusion with kinesthetic illusions. The pulling illusion (i.e., a sensation of being pulled or pushed) is induced by asymmetric vibrations applied to the fingertips, enabling the implementation of small, lightweight, and ungrounded force feedback devices. However, the perceived force intensity is limited. We focused on the kinesthetic illusion, a phenomenon in which the movement of a limb in the direction of muscle extension is illusively perceived by presenting vibrations to ten

Auditory illusions as evidence for a role of the syllable in adult developmental dyslexics.

This study investigated whether adult developmental dyslexics differ from normal controls in early stages of spoken language processing that in turn might be related to specific reading difficulties. Subjects were required to detect prespecified targets under dichotic presentation of auditory nonword pairs. The stimuli were made such that segment migrations were possible. The potential contribution of phonetic features, as well as that of phonemes and syllables, was investigated. The results showed that dyslexics had specifically more syllable-based migrations. This result is discussed in the

A deep convolutional neural network trained for lightness constancy is susceptible to lightness illusions.

Human viewers are able to perform tasks that depend on accurate estimates of surface reflectance, even across large changes in illumination and context. This is a remarkable ability, and successful image-computable models of how the visual system achieves this have remained elusive. Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been developed that are adept at estimating surface reflectance. Here we evaluated one such network as a starting point for a new model of human lightness perception by testing whether it was susceptible to a range of classic lightness illusions. We implement

A Common Prescription Lens Correction Causes Motion Illusions in the Presbyopic and General Populations.

PURPOSE: Monovision is a common correction for presbyopia that focuses one eye at far distances and the other at near distances, resulting in a difference in blur between the eyes. Because blur increases the speed of visual processing by a few milliseconds, these optical conditions can induce dramatic misperceptions of the distances and three-dimensional directions of moving objects. To date, the illusion has been demonstrated only in individuals without presbyopia. METHODS: We analyze both the induced processing speed differences and the visibility of the resulting illusions in presbyopic (n

Body ownership and kinaesthetic illusions: Dissociated bodily experiences for distinct levels of body consciousness?

Seeing an embodied humanoid avatar move its arms can induce in the observer the illusion that its own (static) arms are moving accordingly, the kinematic signals emanating from this avatar thus being considered like those from the biological body. Here, we investigated the causal relationship between these kinaesthetic illusions and the illusion of body ownership, manipulated through visuomotor synchronisation. The results of two experiments revealed that the sense of body ownership over an avatar seen from a first-person perspective was intimately linked to visuomotor synchrony. This was not

Auditory illusions and Post-traumatic stress disorder: Sound test in a case-control study.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and disabling disorder with a high degree of comorbidity. Clinical studies have focused on hallucinations, which could be associated with the severity of the disorder and treatment resistance. Auditory illusions have received little attention so far, possibly because they are particularly difficult to assess. However, they may impact functioning, and underdiagnosis could impair prognosis. To provide a clearer understanding of PTSD psychopathology, this paper proposes to focus on these auditory illusions. A monocentric case-control study was
