Pan-Ret: a semi-supervised framework for scalable detection of pan-retinal diseases.

It has been shown in recent years that a range of optical diseases have early manifestation in retinal fundus images. It is becoming increasingly important to separate the regions of interest (RoI) upfront in the automated classification pipeline in order to ensure the alignment of the disease diagnosis with clinically relevant visual features. In this work, we introduce Pan-Ret, a semi-supervised framework which starts with locating the abnormalities in the biomedically relevant RoIs of a retinal image in an "annotation-agnostic" fashion. It does so by leveraging an anomaly detection setup us

An accurate unsupervised extraction of retinal vasculature using curvelet transform and classical morphological operators.

BACKGROUND: Many ophthalmic disorders such as diabetic retinopathy and hypertension can be early diagnosed by analyzing changes related to the vascular structure of the retina. Accuracy and efficiency of the segmentation of retinal blood vessels are important parameters that can help the ophthalmologist to better characterize the targeted anomalies. METHOD: In this work, we propose a new method for accurate unsupervised automatic segmentation of retinal blood vessels based on a simple and adequate combination of classical filters. Initially, contrast of vessels in retinal image is significant

Robust Dual-Stream Diagnosis Network for Ultrasound Breast Tumor Classification with Cross-Domain Segmentation Priors.

Ultrasound imaging is widely used for early breast cancer screening to enhance patient survival. However, interpreting these images is inherently challenging due to speckle noise, low lesion-to-tissue contrast, and highly variable tumor morphology within complex anatomical structures. Additionally, variations in image characteristics across institutions and devices further impede the development of robust and generalizable computer-aided diagnostic systems. To alleviate these issues, this paper presents a cross-domain segmentation prior guided classification strategy for robust breast tumor di

Improving Alzheimer's disease diagnosis by hyperspherical weighted adversarial learning in open set domain adaptation.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and memory loss. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a key role in detecting AD in Computer-aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. However, variations in MRI scanners and imaging protocols introduce domain shifts, which significantly degrade model performance. Additionally, CAD models may misdiagnose unfamiliar neurodegenerative diseases not represented during training. In these complex and diverse clinical scenarios, employing closed set domain adaptation methods to achieve accurate diagnosis of

Domain generalization for diabetic retinopathy grading with phase augmentation framework.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common diabetic complication, stands as a primary cause of retinal blindness. Rapid automatic DR grading is a crucial approach for prevention. Although deep learning has shown promising results in automated DR grading, its deployment in clinical settings remains challenging due to variations in imaging devices, lighting conditions and other conditions in different hospitals. This study explores the problem of decreased generalization performance in DR grading, stemming from variations in the distributions of the source and target domains, namely addressing the doma

A Non Deep Learning based Method for Detection of Alopecia Areta and Segmentation of Scalp and Hair regions.

Hair and scalp-related diseases often go unnoticed in the initial stages and patients sometimes cannot differentiate between hair loss and regular hair fall. Diagnosing hair related diseases is time-consuming as it requires professional dermatologists to perform visual and medical tests. There are some works reported in literature which perform binary classification of whether the person has alopecia or not. Often, clinicians calculate SALT, Ludwig or Norwood scores to detect the stage of alopecia. This would require a patient's scalp view from top, front, sides and back, which acts as a const

Super-resolution based Nodule Localization in Thyroid Ultrasound Images through Deep Learning.

BACKGROUND: Currently, it is difficult to find a solution to the inverse inappropriate problem, which involves restoring a high-resolution image from a lowresolution image contained within a single image. In nature photography, one can capture a wide variety of objects and textures, each with its own characteristics, most notably the high-frequency component. These qualities can be distinguished from each other by looking at the pictures. OBJECTIVE: The goal is to develop an automated approach to identify thyroid nodules on ultrasound images. The aim of this research is to accurately differen

CystNet: An AI driven model for PCOS detection using multilevel thresholding of ultrasound images.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a widespread endocrinological dysfunction impacting women of reproductive age, categorized by excess androgens and a variety of associated syndromes, consisting of acne, alopecia, and hirsutism. It involves the presence of multiple immature follicles in the ovaries, which can disrupt normal ovulation and lead to hormonal imbalances and associated health complications. Routine diagnostic methods rely on manual interpretation of ultrasound (US) images and clinical assessments, which are time-consuming and prone to errors. Therefore, implementing an automated s

Dual-stream token fusion with Swin Transformer and lesion-aware tokens for gastric metaplasia classification in IoMT-assisted deployment.

BACKGROUND: Gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) is often visually inconspicuous on routine endoscopy, while many artificial intelligence systems rely on dense supervision, lack calibrated probabilities, or provide limited evidence of transfer across datasets and devices. We developed a single-frame, four-class endoscopic classifier that jointly models anatomic context and metaplasia status. METHODS: We propose a dual-stream architecture that combines an RGB Swin Transformer backbone with SHAP-guided lesion-aware multi-scale auxiliary tokens. The two streams are fused through class-token atten

Multi-instance curriculum learning for histopathology image classification with bias reduction.

Multi-instance learning (MIL) exhibits advanced and surpassed capabilities in understanding and recognizing complex patterns within gigapixel histopathological images. However, current MIL methods for the analysis of the histopathological images still give rise to two main concerns. On one hand, vanilla MIL methods intuitively focus on identifying salient instances (easy-to-classify instances) without considering hard-to-classify instances, which is biased and prone to produce false positive instances. On the other hand, since the positive tissue occupies only a small fraction of histopatholog

Inspect quantitative signals in placental histopathology: Computer-assisted multiple functional tissues identification through multi-model fusion and distillation framework.

Pathological analysis of placenta is currently a valuable tool for gaining insights into pregnancy outcomes. In placental histopathology, multiple functional tissues can be inspected as potential signals reflecting the transfer functionality between fetal and maternal circulations. However, the identification of multiple functional tissues is challenging due to (1) severe heterogeneity in texture, size and shape, (2) distribution across different scales and (3) the need for comprehensive assessment at the whole slide image (WSI) level. To solve aforementioned problems, we establish a brand new

Generating synthetic medical images with limited data using auxiliary classifier generative adversarial network: a study on thyroid ultrasound images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The availability of labeled data is crucial for training deep neural networks. However, in some cases, the available data is limited or unlabeled, which poses a significant obstacle in developing accurate models. Various approaches exist to address this issue, such as Image Augmentation, Transfer Learning, and GANs. However, these approaches often require a significant amount of training data or may not generate desired results. In this article, we present a novel method for generating synthetic images from very limited data using the ACGAN. METHODS: We conducted exp

Computerized image understanding system for reliable estimation of spinal curvature in idiopathic scoliosis.

Analysis of scoliosis requires thorough radiographic evaluation by spinal curvature estimation to completely assess the spinal deformity. Spinal curvature estimation gives orthopaedic surgeons an idea of severity of spinal deformity for therapeutic purposes. Manual intervention has always been an issue to ensure accuracy and repeatability. Computer assisted systems are semi-automatic and is still influenced by surgeon's expertise. Spinal curvature estimation completely relies on accurate identification of required end vertebrae like superior end-vertebra, inferior end-vertebra and apical verte

Computer analysis of echographic textures in Hashimoto disease of the thyroid.

Ultrasound B-scan images of the thyroid obtained from 10 patients with Hashimoto disease were digitized and processed by a computer method of image analysis that segments complex B-scan images into regions of homogeneous texture. The method was first applied to B-scan images of the normal thyroid and it consistently classified the normal tissue into a unique region. When applied to Hashimoto disease B-scan images, the same method segmented the thyroid into two regions. Detailed analysis of these regions revealed that their gray-level histograms were very different from that of the normal thyro
