NMRI mice were infected intravenously with a sublethal dose of Listeria monocytogenes and divided into four groups. One group served as the control and the other three were treated with ampicillin beginning 4, 8 or 24 hours after infection. The animals were injected in the morning and in the evening each time with 4 mg ampicillin subcutaneously until a total dose of 48 mg was reached. As demonstrated by counting of the bacteria in the spleen, Listeria could multiply in the ampicillin treated mice in comparison to the control group at best delayed but the infection continued to persist for some

Purified populations of bone marrow-derived (B-) lymphocytes and thymus-derived (T-) lymphocytes were obtained from C3D2F1 hybrid mice shown to be immune to Salmonella typhimurium. These subpopulations of lymphocytes were injected into normal mice; four days later the animals were challenged with 50 50% lethal doses of S. typhimurium, and viable bacteria in livers, spleens, and blood were counted at various intervals after challenge. On day 8 after challenge, the mice supplemented with B-lymphocytes showed a significant decrease in the number of organisms recovered from all three sites, compar

This experiment was carried out to investigate the combination effects of organic and inorganic chromium (Cr) on egg production, egg quality, reproductive response, and immune status of breeder quails and their offspring under heat stress. A total of 140 7-week-old Japanese breeder quails (120 females and 20 males) according to a completely randomized design were used in four treatment groups (five replicate and seven birds per each) lasted for 8 weeks. Quails exposed to 35 °C for 8 h/day for induction of cyclic heat stress treatments consisted of diets supplemented with (1) 1 mg CrCl3 per kil

BACKGROUND: Early immunization to protect infants against hepatitis A (HA) is recommended in intermediate or high endemic areas of the world, but little is known of the effects of maternal antibodies on the immune response. We studied the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of an inactivated HA vaccine administered in two different schedules to 2-month-old infants in an intermediate/high endemic area in Argentina.
METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized study 131 infants received either three doses (at 2, 4, 6 months of age [Group A]) or one dose (at 6 months of age [Group B]) of the pediatri

Monkeypox virus causing in M, rhesus upon aerogenic infection a disease similar to human varioloid was used to evaluate the intensity of immunity against smallpox in immunized M. rhesus monkeys. Postvaccination immunity was solid in all the animals vaccinated intradermally or orally. In 2 out of 14 monkeys immunized orally, however, the immunity was partially overcome. Neutralizing antibody titers in these two monkeys were 1:5 and 1:25, respectively. This agreed with the observations made in Pakistan indicating the possibility that some humans having serum neutralizing antibody titers up to 1:

Histological and immunofluorescence techniques showed that mononuclear cells invaded virus-infected foci in the livers of passively immunized mice within 10 hr of the receipt of immune spleen cells or hyperimmune serum; by 24 hr, marked destruction of virus antigens had occurred in these lesions. Immune cell transfer promoted denser packing of mononuclear cells in the foci and more efficient destruction of infectious material than immune serum. Similar liver lesions developed by the 6th day after sublethal, primary, subcutaneous infection in normal mice. In contrast, in mice with GVHR which we

Patients with diseases associated with defects in cellular immunity, such as the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, characteristically have severe recurrent infections and usually succumb to overwhelming infection at an early age. This communication describes a patient with this syndrome, defective delayed hypersensitivity by skin tests and by in vitro lymphocyte response, who was treated with dialysate of peripheral blood leukocytes (transfer factor). After treatment, the clinical status of the patient improved dramatically, concomitant with the development of delayed hypersensitivity to antigens to w

BACKGROUND: High-quality colostrum is essential to prevent failed transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) in calves, and research on colostrum substitutes has continued over time when quality colostrum is unavailable.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the effects of fresh colostrum (COL), colostrum powder (POW) and a combination (MIX) on TPI in neonatal calves.
METHODS: Forty-five neonatal Holstein-Friesian calves were divided into COL (4 L fresh colostrum), POW (1080 g colostrum powder in 4 L water) and MIX (540 g powder in 4 L colostrum) groups. Total protein (TP), Brix%, and IgG concentrations

We are at the dawn of a new era in the biomedical prevention of childhood malaria. The successful development and ongoing rollout of the first malaria vaccines, RTS,S/AS01E and R21/Matrix-M, have injected much-needed optimism into the malaria prevention field. Additional new vaccines that use novel antigen-delivery platforms, including whole live-attenuated parasites, are on the horizon. Other immune-based preventive strategies, such as human monoclonal antibodies targeting the circumsporozoite protein (CSP), have demonstrated remarkable success in preventing malaria in field trials. Despite t

Colostrum, the initial mammary secretion produced by various mammals following birth, is a conduit for maternal immunity transfer in diverse mammalian species. Concurrently, many cellular processes are occurring in the neonatal small intestine to prepare it to receive molecular signals from a superfood essential for the neonate's health and development. During the prepartum colostrum secretion, the newborn intestine undergoes transient alterations in the intestinal barrier, primarily regulating immunoglobulin absorption. Accordingly, the immunity transfer can be delineated in two stages: the i

BACKGROUND: The antibody repertoire in the blood encodes a comprehensive record of an individual's immunological encounters. Knowing the individuality of the repertoire would benefit in vaccinations, and also in personalising treatments. Formation of the immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody repertoire starts before birth.
METHODS: Here, we used a mimotope variation analysis (MVA) method to gain deeper insight into the repertoire of maternal antibodies actively transferred to newborns during pregnancy with the follow-up at 6 months.
FINDINGS: Our study of 25 mothers and their neonates highlighted

Dengue virus (DV) infection causes either a benign syndrome, dengue fever, or a severe syndrome, dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS), that is characterized by systemic capillary leakage, thrombocytopaenia and hypovolaemic shock. DHF/DSS occur mainly due to secondary infection by a heterotype DV infection in children and adults but in infants even primary infection by DV causes DHF/DSS. Clinical manifestations of DHF/DSS are more significantly associated with death in infants compared with older children. Vertical transmission of DV and anti-DV IgG has been well reported a

Immunohaematological tests used in antenatal patients have come a long way. However, despite a great deal of progress, we should not loose sight of the fact that these tests give only an indirect measurement and will only help the obstetrician, in conjunction with other fetal parameters, to assess the severity of the haemolytic disease (HD) of the fetus and newborn. The best method to assess the severity is the direct determination of foetal blood group hemoglobin after foetal blood sampling but this procedure is not without risk. Since 10 years ago, it is possible to determine the RHD genotyp

The transfer of host defence capacity to the human offspring provides a remarkable model of passive transfer of immunity. In fact it may also provide an example of active immunization. The transfer of mucosal protection via breast feeding offers many additional advantages for the mother and infant. Through its contraceptive effects it increases the spacing between births, thus diminshing the infant mortality and the burden on the mother. It also enhances bonding between mother and child, it seems to increase the IQ and school result of the infant and might decrease the risk of certain malignan

Rabbits were actively immunized using a barbiturate--BGG conjugate as the immunogen. The antiserum obtained from actively immunized rabbits was administered intravenously to mice to accomplish passive immunization. The antibody binding capacity for 3H-phenobarbital was shown to be sustained in passively immunized mice for periods of up to three weeks. Serum levels of 3H-phenobarbital in passively immunized mice and control mice were compared following drug administration and found to be altered in the antibody-containing mice. There was a 4-fold higher amount of 3H-phenobarbital present in the
