Intimate Partner Violence in India: Abuse in India's Empowered Action Group States.

Married women in India experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at alarming rates. This study explores regional differences in Indian women's physical IPV experiences by looking at the effect of living in eight Empowered Action Group (EAG) states. It is hypothesized that women in EAG states will be more likely to have experienced physical IPV than women living outside EAG states. A sample of 65,587 women was selected from the 2005-2006 India National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3). Counter to our hypothesis, logistic regression results show that living in an EAG state decreases likelihood of …

METHODS: Twenty-two districts from 4 states (Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra) were studied. We described the practices and c…

Nocardiosis in a tertiary care hospital in North India and review of patients reported from India.

Nocardiosis, an uncommon infection of the past, is being increasingly reported in recent years with rise of immunosuppressed patients. In India, very few centers have reported this disease. The outpatient number…

Campylobacteriosis in India: Beyond gastroenteritis.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter species, particularly Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, are among the leading global causes of bacterial gastroenteritis and are primarily transmitted through contaminated food, water and animal products. Despite their recognised role in enteric infections, the broader clinical and public health significance of Campylobacter remains underappreciated, particularly in developing countries such as India. Beyond gastrointestinal illness, these pathogens are increasingly associated with a range of extraintestinal complications, including bacteremia, neurological…

Drug control: initiatives from India.

The South Asian region, including India, faces an increased prevalence of illicit drug use. Key challenges include rising opioid use, injecting drug use and spread of stimulant use from some pockets to other regions of the country. Challenges faced are poor surveillance, lack of evidence-based and structured prevention programmes, wide treatment gaps and inadequate social capital for reintegration of substance users into society. The drug control efforts in India have resulted in an improved drug offence surveillance system, increased community awareness, a growing network of drug treatment ce…

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis in India.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a lung disorder caused by immune-mediated reactions mounted against Aspergillus fumigatus. The disorder most commonly complicates the course of patients with asthma and cystic fibrosis. From its first description in 1952, significant advances have been made in understanding the pathogenesis and the diagnosis and treatment of ABPA. In the last two decades, most research on ABPA has been published from India. The prevalence and clinical presentation may differ in India from that reported elsewhere. Herein, we review the epidemiology, clinical and…

Desert Dermatoses (Thar Desert, India).

Desert dermatology describes the cutaneous changes and the diseases affecting those living in the desert. Diurnal variation in temperature is high and is characteristic of the deserts. The lack of water affects daily activities and impacts dermatological conditions. Adaptation to the desert is, therefore, important to survival. Infections are the most common conditions seen among this population, and among them, fungal infections are the most common. The high incidence of these infections would be accounted for by the poor hygienic conditions due to lack of bathing facilities due to scarcity o

Supporting rabies control in India.

Earlier this year, Tony Fooks and colleagues described how, under a laboratory twinning project run by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the UK's OIE Reference Laboratory for rabies, based at the APHA in Weybridge, had been working with the Changchun Veterinary Research Institute in the People's Republic of China to help the institute develop into an OIE Reference Laboratory itself (VR, March 5, 2016, vol 178, pp 231-232). Now, the APHA is taking part in a further three-year project to build rabies diagnosis capability in Bangalore, India, as he and his colleagues explain below.
