Association of early life anti-pathogen immune responses with infant food sensitisation and allergy: An elastic-net stability-selection approach.

BACKGROUND: The development of food sensitisation (FS) and food allergy (FA) reflects complex interactions between genetic, environmental and immunological factors, which conventional univariate approaches may fail to capture. This exploratory study applied penalised regression to determine whether early-life immune responses to common pathogens are associated with infant FS and FA. METHODS: At 1 year of age, FS was determined by skin prick test and FA by allergy/tolerance history and oral food challenge. Elastic net regression (ENR) was applied to cytokine response data (13 cytokines) from w

Food and Drug Administration Expert Panel on Infant Formula "Operation Stork Speed" June 2025: Part 2, Regulatory and Safety Considerations.

Operation Stork Speed was launched to modernize infant formula oversight after 2022 shortages and other evidence of supply chain and safety issues. Current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) processes to regulate formulas are at times slow and complex, making it difficult for new formulas to enter the market. One key pathway to adding bioactive substances or other compounds to infant formula is via the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) route. GRAS and food additive pathways require safety data, but food additive petitions require more safety information and cannot be marketed until FDA appro

Mice gut microbiota programming by using the infant food profile. The effect on growth, gut microbiota and the immune system.

During the complementary feeding (CF) period, nutritional imbalances can have negative consequences not only on a child's health in the short term but also later in adulthood, as a phenomenon known as "nutritional programming" takes place. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible changes in body growth, gut microbiota (GM) and the immune system in mice fed with two different commercial sterilized baby foods in jars (BFJs) for CF. Mice fed with different BFJs (A and B groups) showed an accelerated growth from the fifth week of life when compared with the control (C) group. Group A sho

Poor infant inhibitory control predicts food fussiness in childhood - A possible protective role of n-3 PUFAs for vulnerable children.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) children are more impulsive towards a sweet reward and have altered feeding behavior in adulthood. We hypothesized that early life inhibitory control predicts feeding behaviors later on in childhood, and the consumption of n-3 PUFAs during infancy may protect IUGR children from developing problematic feeding behaviors. 156 children had information on the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) at 18 months, Food Frequency Questionnaire at 48 months and Children׳s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at 72 months. There was a significant negative cor

A case of infant botulism with a possible link to infant formula milk powder: evidence for the presence of more than one strain of Clostridium botulinum in clinical specimens and food.

Infant botulism was confirmed in a 5-month-old female by both isolation of Clostridium botulinum type B and by detection of type B botulinum neurotoxin in rectal washout and faeces. DNA fingerprinting of nine isolates from faeces yielded two different amplified-fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) patterns. C. botulinum was isolated from two of 14 food and drink items from the patient's home: C. botulinum type A was recovered from an opened container of dried rice pudding and C. botulinum type B from opened infant formula milk powder. Ten C. botulinum type B isolates from the opened infant form

Genomic insights into antimicrobial resistance and isolation source classification of Cronobacter sakazakii from infant and toddler food in the United States.

Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic foodborne pathogen associated with severe infections in infants, linked to powdered infant formula (PIF) and related products. We conducted genomic profiling of C. sakazakii (n=209) from infant and toddler food in the United States, comprising all publicly available genomes for this source, through the integration of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene (ARG), plasmid replicon, virulence gene, phylogenetic, and pan-genome analyses. We further applied a machine learning (ML)-driven isolation source classification approach based on pan-genome features to

Parent perspectives on guided self-care approaches to ensure timely access to therapy in infants with food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Early allergen immunotherapy (AIT), including oral immunotherapy (OIT), is increasingly recognized as a disease-modifying intervention for infants with Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy. However, limited access to allergy specialists and long wait times often prevent timely initiation during the critical early-life window. Guided self-care models could offer alternative care pathways, yet parents' perspectives on such approaches remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To explore parents' perceptions of the acceptability, feasibility, and conditions required for guided self

Acute tree nut-triggered food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome in two infants: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy characterised by delayed repetitive vomiting and can be difficult to distinguish from infectious illness or even an IgE-mediated allergy. Tree nuts are uncommon but increasingly recognised triggers, and evidence regarding atypical FPIES with concomitant IgE sensitisation remains limited. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe two infants with severe acute reactions to tree nuts who were managed at a paediatric allergy centre. The first, a boy with eczema and cow's milk allergy, developed reproducible

Baby Food Pouches, Baby-Led Weaning, and Iron Status in New Zealand Infants: An Observational Study.

Iron deficiency in infants can impact development, and there are concerns that the use of baby food pouches and baby-led weaning may impair iron status. First Foods New Zealand (FFNZ) was an observational study of 625 New Zealand infants aged 6.9 to 10.1 months. Feeding methods were defined based on parental reports of infant feeding at "around 6 months of age": "frequent" baby food pouch use (five+ times per week) and "full baby-led weaning" (the infant primarily self-feeds). Iron status was assessed using a venepuncture blood sample. The estimated prevalence of suboptimal iron status was 23%

A review of dairy food intake for improving health among black infants, toddlers, and young children in the US.

Adequate nutrition is paramount for proper growth and musculoskeletal, neurocognitive, and immunological development in infants, toddlers, and young children. Among breastfeeding mother-child dyads, this critical window of development, is impacted by both maternal and offspring dietary patterns. For mothers, their dietary patterns impact not only their own health and well-being, but also the nutrition of their breast milk - which is recommended as the sole source of food for the first 6 months of their infant's life, and as a complementary source of nutrition until at least 2 years of age. Feeding patterns and growth trajectories in breast-fed and formula-fed infants during the introduction of complementary food.

Introduction: several investigations have identified breastfeeding as a protective factor for rapid infant weight gain and childhood obesity while other studies have found that this protective effect could be the result of confounding factors. Objectives: to assess the associations between lactation practices (breast-fed vs formula-fed infants) during the introduction of complementary food period, as well as the following: a) patterns of food intake; and b) trajectories of growth at six, nine and 12 months (z-score of weight, height and body mass index [BMI] and changes in these z-scores from

Risk assessment for infants exposed to furan from ready-to-eat thermally processed food products in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Thermal processes and long storage of food lead to reactions between reducing sugars and amino acids, or with ascorbic acid, carbohydrates or polyunsaturated fatty acids. As a result of these reactions, new compounds are created. One of these compounds having an adverse effect on human health is furan. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to estimate the infants exposure to furan found in thermally processed jarred food products, as well as characterizing the risk by comparing the exposure to the reference dose (RfD) and calculating margins of exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

A micronutrient-fortified food enhances iron and selenium status of Zambian infants but has limited efficacy on zinc.

Micronutrient-fortified, cereal-based infant foods are recommended for reducing multiple micronutrient deficiencies in low-income countries, but their nutritional quality is not always optimal. In a double-blind randomized trial, we compared the efficacy of a locally produced porridge based on maize, beans, bambaranuts, and groundnuts fortified with 19 (rich) or 9 (basal) micronutrients. Infants aged 6 mo from Lusaka, Zambia were randomized to receive the richly fortified (n = 373) or basal (n = 370) porridge daily for 12 mo along with routine vitamin A supplements. Baseline and final micronut…
