Biochemical evidence for a P2Y-like receptor in Tetrahymena thermophila.

Extracellular nucleotides are ubiquitous signaling molecules. ATP signals through two receptor types: the ionotropic P2X receptors, and the metabotropic P2Y receptors. ATP acts as a chemorepellent in Tetrahymena thermophila, where it causes a distinct avoidance response. The intracellular mechanisms by which ATP causes avoidance in this organism, however, are unknown. In this study, we use in vivo pharmacological assays along with enzyme immuno-assays to obtain information about the ATP chemorepellent pathway and its associated second messenger systems. Our data show strong similarities betwee

Coping strategies mediate the association between stigma and fertility quality of life in infertile women undergoing in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer.

BACKGROUND: The mediating role of coping strategies and its relationship with psychological well-being and quality of life has been considered in the literature. However, there is little research to explore the mechanism of coping strategies on stigma and fertility quality of life (FertiQoL) in infertile women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET). The aim of this study was to examine the mediating effect of coping strategies on the relationship between stigma and fertility quality of life (FertiQoL) in Chinese infertile women undergoing In Vitro Fertilization Embryo Trans

Documenting the efficacy of virtual reality exposure with psychophysiological and information processing measures.

Many outcome studies have been conducted to assess the efficacy of virtual reality in the treatment of specific phobias. However, most studies used self-report data. The addition of objective measures of arousal and information processing mechanisms would be a valuable contribution in order to validate the usefulness of virtual reality in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The goal of this study was to document the impact of virtual reality exposure (VRE) on cardiac response and automatic processing of threatening stimuli. Twenty-eight adults suffering from arachnophobia were assessed and rec

Modified endoluminal ureteral stenting for the management of proximal ureteral obstruction in two cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Two cases of placement of modified endoluminal ureteral stents are described, for revision of a subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) and for primary treatment of obstructive ureterolithiasis. Modified endoluminal stents were inserted through the ureterotomy, anchored in the renal pelvis with a single pigtail and shortened to a length sufficient to span the proximal ureter and ureterotomy site. RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: The advantages of this approach as a surgical option for feline obstructive ureterolithiasis are demonstrated, including the avoidance of disruption,

Personality in panic disorder with agoraphobia: a Rorschach study.

In this study, we tested several hypotheses derived from self psychology (Diamond, 1987) regarding personality features of patients suffering from panic disorder and agoraphobia (PDA). PDA patients are thought to suffer from a deficit in negative affect-regulating capacity, surrounded by defenses such as avoidance, repression, denial, and reaction formation against dependency needs. These defenses are thought to lead to a greatly impoverished affective life. The Rorschach Comprehensive System was used to assess the personality features of avoidance, restricted affective life, and reaction form

Behavioral differences between vasopressin-deficient (Brattleboro) and normal Long-Evans rats.

Behavioral comparisons were made between rats of the Brattleboro strain with hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus (DI) and normal Long-Evans rats. Measurements were made of activity behavior in a lighted open field and in a darkened activity chamber. Subtle measurement specific differences in the activity behavior of DI rats were found which suggested altered emotion, motivation and/or attention in the DI rats. In terms of learned behavior, DI and normal rats displayed a similar degree of habituation to all within-session activity measures in both the open field and darkened activity cha

A psychological model of predictive factors of distress following long COVID.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, described as "the continuation or development of new symptoms 3 months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection", is estimated to affect at least 10-20 % of all cases of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. Because of its novelty, information regarding the experience of Long COVID is still emerging. METHODS: This study examines psychological distress in two long COVID populations, and their experience of fatigue, cognitive failures, experiential avoidance, rumination, and perceived injustice. Participants were recruited via a long COVID hospital clinic and online self-diagnosing

Dscam1-mediated self-avoidance counters netrin-dependent targeting of dendrites in Drosophila.

Dendrites and axons show precise targeting and spacing patterns for proper reception and transmission of information in the nervous system. Self-avoidance promotes complete territory coverage and nonoverlapping spacing between processes from the same cell [1, 2]. Neurons that lack Drosophila Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule 1 (Dscam1) show aberrant overlap, fasciculation, and accumulation of dendrites and axons, demonstrating a role in self-recognition and repulsion leading to self-avoidance [3-11]. Fasciculation and accumulation of processes suggested that Dscam1 might promote process spa

Serotonergic modulation of the balance system in panic disorder: an open study.

Experimental evidence suggests that panic disorder is characterized by abnormalities in the balance system function and that these abnormalities might be related to the severity of agoraphobic avoidance. Since the balance system can be modulated by the serotonergic system, we investigated the effect of a 6-week treatment with citalopram on the balance system function in patients with panic disorder. Fifteen patients with panic disorder with/without agoraphobia underwent static posturography on days 0 and 42. Static posturography and clinical assessments were carried out by different investigat

Kidney transplantation: evaluation of donors and recipients.

MR imaging provides a comprehensive method for noninvasive evaluation of renal donor anatomy. Although multidetector helical CT can provide similar information, MR imaging has the advantage of avoiding exposure to ionizing radiation and potentially nephrotoxic contrast material. These are important considerations in screening a generally healthy donor population. MR imaging also can provide complete evaluation of the kidney after transplantation, where avoidance of potentially nephrotoxic agents and preservation of maximal renal function are critical.

Development of the 'Extreme Demand Avoidance Questionnaire' (EDA-Q): preliminary observations on a trait measure for Pathological Demand Avoidance.

BACKGROUND: Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a term increasingly used in the United Kingdom to describe children who obsessively resist everyday demands, going to extreme lengths to avoid these. There is debate about its relationship with both autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Unlike ASD, children with PDA are said to use socially manipulative avoidance strategies; and unlike ODD, they resort to extreme, embarrassing or age-inappropriate behaviour. To date, there has been little research into PDA, and it remains contentious. Currently, there are no q

Context-dependent feature modulation shapes human decision policies in approach-avoidance conflicts.

Sequential decisions often involve trade-offs between immediate rewards and future risks, particularly in approach-avoidance contexts. While such behavior is commonly framed in terms of optimization principles, it remains unclear how decision processes adapt across contexts. We developed a sequential foraging task in which participants made binary choices under probabilistic reward and predation risk (threat). The design dissociated reward probability from threat and enabled formal comparison of decision-relevant features (e.g., reward and threat probabilities), a multi-feature policy, and a m

Neural basis underlying the trait of attachment anxiety and avoidance revealed by the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations and resting-state functional connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Attachment theory demonstrates that early attachment experience shapes internal working models with mental representations of self and close relationships, which affects personality traits and interpersonal relationships in adulthood. Although research has focused on brain structural and functional underpinnings to disentangle attachment styles in healthy individuals, little is known about the spontaneous brain activity associated with self-reported attachment anxiety and avoidance during the resting state. METHODS: One hundred and nineteen individuals participated in the study, c

Constructive and Unproductive Processing of Traumatic Experiences in Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Youth.

Although there is substantial evidence to support the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there is some debate about how these treatments have their effects. Modern learning theory and cognitive and emotional processing theories highlight the importance of reducing avoidance, facilitating the constructive processing of feared experiences, and strengthening new inhibitory learning. We examined variables thought to be associated with unproductive and constructive processing of traumatic experiences in a sample of 81 youth with elevated PTSD

Supervised Object-Specific Distance Estimation from Monocular Images for Autonomous Driving.

Accurate distance estimation is a requirement for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to provide drivers with safety-related functions such as adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance. Radars and lidars can be used for providing distance information; however, they are either expensive or provide poor object information compared to image sensors. In this study, we propose a lightweight convolutional deep learning model that can extract object-specific distance information from monocular images. We explore a variety of training and five structural settings of the model and conduct v
