Finding Motivation: Online Information Seeking Following Newborn Screening for Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that has no manifestations for carriers but is terminal for those diagnosed with it. CF is identified through newborn screening (NBS) tests, and most families have no knowledge about CF before their contact with a NBS program. Acknowledging the Internet as a popular health information source, this study examined information exchange about CF in online community forums. This article, guided by self-determination theory, aimed at providing understanding of psychological needs and motivation for health information seeking and active communication about CF

[Socio-anthropological perspective of the under nutrition care of cancer patients].

The diet of the cancer patient is a major focus of prevention and treatment strategy of the recent plans that fight against cancer. It is sometimes reduced to a rapid series of more or less general advice, often interfered by other sources of information, more or less conventional. In this pathological situation where the nutritional status of the patient is paramount, it seems crucial to understand the different modalities of how the food behavior is implemented. This article describes the construction modalities of the cancer eater decisions. The goal of the socio-anthropological analysis pr

The internet is parents' main source of information about psychiatric manifestations of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS).

With advances in laboratory technology, an increasing number of potentially pathogenic CNVs is recognised. The phenotypic effects of some CNVs are well characterised, however, it remains unclear how much information reaches the parents of affected children and by what route. The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (del22q11.2) is caused by the deletion of approximately 40 genes from the long arm of chromosome 22 and was first described in 1955 [1]. Our study reports the extent to which parents of an affected child are aware of the various manifestation of the condition and describes how they first learn

More Help from Friends and Family? Trends in Determinants of Surrogate Health Information-Seeking.

Friends and family members often choose to seek health information for a loved one, rather than all information-seeking being carried out by the patient for themselves. Despite the popularity of this proxy for health information-seeking behavior (PHISB), there is a lack of more current data on PHISB, as well as on changes in PHISB. We analyzed health information-seeking based on data from the two available waves of the HINTS Germany study (2018/19: N = 2.147;2020: N = 1.865). HINTS Germany is a data set mapping health information behaviors in the German population, closely linked to the well-e

TMJ online: Investigating temporomandibular disorders as "TMJ" on YouTube.

As the understanding of temporomandibular disorders' (TMDs) aetiologies and treatments develops from non-evidence-based to evidence-based approaches, the availability of sound information will likewise grow and need to be disseminated. The purpose of this study is to describe the content most commonly viewed in YouTube videos related to TMDs or "TMJ" and see whether videos from different sources have different content. Video information was gathered by searching YouTube for the term "TMJ," and data were recorded related to descriptive information as well as content. Statistical analyses includ

Predictors of Internet use for health information among male and female Internet users: Findings from the 2009 Taiwan National Health Interview Survey.

BACKGROUND: The Internet is an increasingly important source of health information for the general population. Both preventive health behavior and Internet use are known to be different between men and women. However, few studies have compared predictors of Internet use for health information between the sexes. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence and predictors of Internet use for health information among male and female adult Internet users using data from a population-based survey in Taiwan. METHODS: Respondents between the ages of 20-65 years were identified from the dataset of the

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms and information seeking during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Increased mental-health symptoms as a reaction to stressful life events, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, are common. Critically, successful adaptation helps to reduce such symptoms to baseline, preventing long-term psychiatric disorders. It is thus important to understand whether and which psychiatric symptoms show transient elevations, and which persist long-term and become chronically heightened. At particular risk for the latter trajectory are symptom dimensions directly affected by the pandemic, such as obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. In this longitudinal large-scale study (N = 406), we

Curiosity and evidence quality affect information seeking and eye movements during reading.

Curiosity is critical for learning and selective information processing, but it is unclear how it affects eye-movement patterns during reading. We tracked participants' (n=56) eye movements in a task with 18 health-related questions. Each question was followed by up to 15 statements from three quality categories: scientific relevant (SR), scientific irrelevant (SI), and non-scientific relevant (NR). The statements were concealed in three boxes according to evidence quality. Participants could click on any box to reveal a new statement until they had read all the statements or were ready to ans

Women's Engagement With Different Internet-Enabled Technologies to Access Digital Menopause Information: Mixed Methods, Multiphase Sequential Study.

BACKGROUND: Information on menopause can come from a variety of sources, from friends and family to health care professionals, but increasingly, digital information has become a significant source. Digital information can be accessed online, through websites, social media, podcasts, and online groups or forums. The extent to which digital information on menopause is accessed and consumed can vary widely depending on individual circumstances. Existing literature has focused on investigating a single technology at a time in terms of digital menopause information, rather than exploring a wider ec
