BACKGROUND AND AIM: Endoscopic resection is commonly used to remove gastric neoplasms. However, effective dosing or scheduling of proton pump inhibitors for the prevention of delayed bleeding after endoscopic resection remains unclear.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively analyse injection drug users (IDUs) with complications after intra- or extra-vasal administration of dissolved tablets.
DESIGN: A retrospective study.
METHODS: The hospital discharge registers were used to identify the patients admitted in different clinics in Helsinki University Central Hospital during 2000-2005. The patient demographics and social background were clarified. The type of the crushed drugs, the injection route and the timing of administration were registered. Medical interventions, examinations and surgical procedures were recorded.

The hypotensive effect of the alpha 1-adrenoreceptor antagonist benoxathian has been evaluated in rats and dogs, in comparison to that evoked by WB 4101 and prazosin. In anaesthetized dogs, i.v. injection of benoxathian (25-100 micrograms/kg), WB 4101 (5-25 micrograms/kg) and prazosin (50 micrograms/kg) produced an immediate fall in diastolic blood pressure, which reached a maximum at about 30 sec after drug administration. A first case is reported of illicit intravenous injection of pentazocine tablets recognized in a country other than the USA. The pulmonary complications of i.v. drug abuse in general and in particular the hazards of injection of aqueous suspensions of pharmaceutical preparations intended for oral consumption, with embolization of abundant insoluble foreign material, are discussed. Diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic procedures are suggested.

Intravenous injection (i.v.) of heat-killed Pseudomonas aeruginosa in mice produced histologic changes in the thymic cortex, some of which resembled, while others differed from, those produced by i.v. injection of living BCG.
