Malaria incidence before and after long-lasting insecticidal net distribution in four Zambian provinces, 2010-2021.

BACKGROUND: Zambia faces persistently high malaria morbidity and mortality rates, worsened by inadequate prevention and treatment resources, and high transmission. We aimed to assess the impact of three long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) distribution campaigns in four Zambian provinces from 2010 to 2021. METHODS: We employed binomial regression and interrupted time series to analyze monthly malaria incidence across four provinces in Zambia (Eastern, Luapula, Northern and Northwestern) with a combined population of 5965257 within 1357 health facility catchment areas, utilizing data from the

Prevalence and determinants of insecticide-treated bed-net utilization among under-five children in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to be a significant public health challenge in Ethiopia, especially among children under the age of five, who are more vulnerable to the disease. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are widely recommended as an effective preventive measure. However, studies in Ethiopia have reported inconsistent findings regarding ITN utilization among under-five children. This study aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of ITN use and identify determinants among children under five in Ethiopia. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by searching PubMed, CINA

Malaria infection and predictor factors among Chadian nomads' children.

BACKGROUND: In Chad, malaria remains a significant public health concern, particularly among nomadic populations. Geographical factors and the mobility of human populations have shown to be associated with the diversity of Plasmodium species. The study aims to describe the malaria prevalence among nomadic children and to investigate its associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in February and October 2021 among nomadic communities in Chad. Blood sample were collected and tested from 187 Arab, Fulani and Dazagada nomadic children aged 3-59 months using malaria rapid d

Trends in malaria epidemiological factors following the implementation of current control strategies in Dangassa, Mali.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, three strategies have reduced severe malaria cases and deaths in endemic regions of Africa, Asia and the Americas, specifically: (1) artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT); (2) insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs); and, (3) intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine in pregnancy (IPTp). The rationale for this study was to examine communities in Dangassa, Mali where, in 2015, two additional control strategies were implemented: ITN universal coverage and seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) among children under 5 years old. METHODS:

Monitoring of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) coverage versus utilization: a community-based survey in malaria endemic villages of Central India.

BACKGROUND: Despite the known effectiveness of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in providing protection against malaria, high level of ownership and use are very difficult to achieve and maintain. Nearly 40,000 LLINs were distributed in 2014 as an intervention tool against malaria transmission in 80 villages of Keshkal sub-district in Chhattisgarh, India. This study assessed LLIN coverage, access, utilization pattern, and key determinants for the net use 1 year after mass distribution. METHODS: In 2015, a cross-sectional household survey was carried out in 80 study clusters (whole villa

Do Size and Insecticide Treatment Matter? Evaluation of Different Nets against Phlebotomus argentipes, the Vector of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Nepal.

In the Indian subcontinent, Leishmania donovani, the parasite causing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is transmitted by the sand fly vector Phlebotomus argentipes. Long lasting insecticide treated nets (LN) have been postulated as alternative or complement to Indoor Residual Spraying but there are few field studies evaluating the entomological efficacy of different nets against this vector. We conducted two crossover trials in a VL endemic area in Nepal to compare the barrier effect of (1) LN with different mesh sizes (156 holes/inch2 vs 625 holes/inch2) and (2) alpha-cypermethrin treated LN and u

How effective is integrated vector management against malaria and lymphatic filariasis where the diseases are transmitted by the same vector?

BACKGROUND: The opportunity to integrate vector management across multiple vector-borne diseases is particularly plausible for malaria and lymphatic filariasis (LF) control where both diseases are transmitted by the same vector. To date most examples of integrated control targeting these diseases have been unanticipated consequences of malaria vector control, rather than planned strategies that aim to maximize the efficacy and take the complex ecological and biological interactions between the two diseases into account. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We developed a general model of malaria a

Urban lymphatic filariasis in the metropolis of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The last decades have seen a considerable increase in urbanization in Sub-Saharan Africa, and it is estimated that over 50% of the population will live in urban areas by 2040. Rapid growth of cities combined with limited economic resources often result in informal settlements and slums with favorable conditions for proliferation of vectors of lymphatic filariasis (LF). In Dar es Salaam, which has grown more than 30 times in population during the past 55 years (4.4 million inhabitants in 2012), previous surveys have indicated high prevalences of LF. This study investigated epidemiol

Syndromic diagnosis of malaria in rural Sierra Leone and proposed additions to the national integrated management of childhood illness guidelines for fever.

Many countries in Africa, including Sierra Leone, have adopted artemisinin-based combination therapy as first-line therapy for treatment of patients with malaria. Because laboratory testing is often unavailable in rural areas, the cost-benefit and viability of this approach may depend on accurately diagnosing malaria by using clinical criteria. We assessed the accuracy of syndromic diagnosis for malaria in three peripheral health units in rural Sierra Leone and determined factors that were associated with an accurate malaria diagnosis. Of 175 children diagnosed with malaria on syndromic ground

Evaluation of Attractive Targeted Sugar Baits, a new outdoor vector control strategy against malaria: Results from a cluster randomised open-label parallel arm controlled trial in Southwestern Mali.

BACKGROUND: The Attractive Targeted Sugar Bait (ATSB) is a new malaria outdoor vector control tool targeting sugar-feeding behaviours of vector mosquitoes. In Mali, a two-year open-label two-arm cluster randomised controlled trial compared the efficacy and safety of ATSB plus insecticide treated mosquito nets (ITN) versus ITN alone on malaria burden. METHODS: 76 clusters were formed, of which 38 were randomly allocated to the intervention. Cohort studies and household surveys were performed to assess clinical malaria incidence (primary outcome) in children aged 5 to 14 years and malaria infec

Optimizing malaria diagnostic sensitivity as a prerequisite for targeted vector control and rational antimalarial deployment: A compartmental modeling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gains in malaria transmission reduction achieved through insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are reversing amid emerging artemisinin partial resistance. While sensitive diagnostics are key to monitoring resistant parasite-driven outbreaks, most malaria outbreak models treat diagnostic sensitivity as a fixed background parameter, obscuring its role both in clinical progression and disease burden. METHODS: We developed an eight-compartment deterministic model in which diagnostic sensitivity acts as a bifurcation parameter partitioning individuals infected with uncomplicated malaria into

Linking Anopheles bionomics and human behaviour in the Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND: Laos aims to eliminate malaria by 2030, with residual transmission present in the south. Understanding how LLINs function in relation to vector and human behaviours, and linking this to epidemiological outcomes, is critical for improving vector control strategies. Integrating human behaviour observations (HBOs) with entomological and epidemiological data helps identify gaps in protection and inform national malaria programs. METHODS: Entomological surveillance of Anopheles mosquitoes was conducted alongside HBOs in both rainy (July-September 2022) and dry (February-April 2023) sea

Usability of a digital tool to support long-lasting insecticide net distribution in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been a widely used malaria prevention method for decades. In South Sudan, LLINs are typically distributed by volunteers who use paper-based systems to collect distribution data. Paper-based systems are simple to use but have a higher occurrence of data inaccuracies and can hinder the timely use of data for decision-making. In 2022, a digital tool was introduced to collect data during the LLIN campaign in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBeG). The tool aimed to improve the accuracy of data entry and enable data to be used in real-time for decisio

The bionomics of Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestus inside local houses and their implications for vector control strategies in areas with high coverage of insecticide-treated nets in South-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Residual malaria transmissions in Africa may be associated with improved coverage of insecticide-treated nets, house features, and livestock husbandry. These human-land use activities may drive the ecology and behaviour of malaria vectors which sustain residual malaria transmission. This study was conducted to assess changes in the ecology and behaviour of Anopheles funestus and Anopheles arabiensis in villages with high coverage of insecticide-treated nets to guide the selection of complementary vector control strategies against residual malaria transmission. METHODS: Mosquitoes

The underlying reasons for very high levels of bed net use, and higher malaria infection prevalence among bed net users than non-users in the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Bed nets reduce malaria-related illness and deaths, by forming a protective barrier around people sleeping under them. When impregnated with long-lasting insecticide formulations they also repel or kill mosquitoes attempting to feed upon sleeping humans, and can even suppress entire populations of malaria vectors that feed predominantly upon humans. Nevertheless, an epidemiological study in 2012 demonstrated higher malaria prevalence among bed net users than non-users in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. METHODS: Focus group discussions were conducted with women from four selected wa

Transmission and control of Plasmodium knowlesi: a mathematical modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: Plasmodium knowlesi is now recognised as a leading cause of malaria in Malaysia. As humans come into increasing contact with the reservoir host (long-tailed macaques) as a consequence of deforestation, assessing the potential for a shift from zoonotic to sustained P. knowlesi transmission between humans is critical. METHODS: A multi-host, multi-site transmission model was developed, taking into account the three areas (forest, farm, and village) where transmission is thought to occur. Latin hypercube sampling of model parameters was used to identify parameter sets consistent wit

Reduced Efficacy of Piperonyl Butoxide Based Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets Against Malaria Vectors in Western Kenya.

In response to rising insecticide resistance among malaria vector species, countries are implementing long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) coformulated with piperonyl butoxide (PBO), which can restore susceptibility to pyrethroid-based nets. In mid-2021, Kenya National Malaria Program rolled out PBO-LLINs in Bungoma County. We evaluated the susceptibility of wild-collected vectors to new versus used PBO-LLINs using the WHO cone bioassays. Results were confirmed with the WHO susceptibility assay. A total of 2,020 female Anopheles were tested, of which 1,480 were wild-collected and 540

Residual efficacy of standard and new-generation long-lasting insecticidal nets 3 years after mass distribution in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are essential for malaria control, but their effectiveness is threatened by increasing resistance of Anopheles to pyrethroids. In 2021, Côte d'Ivoire distributed both standard and new-generation LLINs during its mass distribution campaign. This study assessed the physical integrity and residual efficacy of these nets 3 y after their distribution. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 10 health districts chosen for ecological diversity. A total of 570 LLINs were withdrawn from randomly selected households and evaluated through WHO
